Hiya members! It may not be awards season, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t good times and accomplishments to celebrate! Does your club have an outstanding member or have you made major achievements? You should celebrate that! District Convention is coming up and there are many awards designed to celebrate your club and most importantly the members. So don’t delay and get started on those awards! In the meantime though, here are some of the accomplishments that you the members have contributed to! Service Hours: Goal: 14,500 Current: 6,229 *Please continue to accurately recorded those hours in the Monthly Report Form! ELIMINATE Fundraising: Goal: $10,000 Current: $4,699.49 *Keep up the great work with fundraising for this great project. Continue to turn in the money fundraised. Membership: Goal: 725 Current: 431* *Continue to recruit new members and turn in your per member fees! This is our progress on a few of our district goals and this wouldn’t have been possible without dedicated members like you! I truly thank you all for your hard work and being SO dedicated to this district. I can’t believe that we are over halfway done with our time together, but I’ve loved every moment of our journey together. I’ve seen leaders emerge and friendships created, and it makes my job as Governor easy. I hope that you all celebrate the little joys in your club and I can’t wait to see you at District Convention in Eau Claire!

All the best,

Teasha

You’ve all had some time to take a at your award CDs

and I hope that you are all starting to consider who is going

to complete which award form and most importantly, who

your nominees will be! Below, I’ve pulled a few more hints for

two awards out of the alcove.

“Distinguished Circle K Alumni Award” This award is for that special someone who is no longer a part of Circle K but

continues to make Circle K a priority after graduation. The alumni chosen has to

display the three tenets of CKI in their personal and/or professional life. However, they

are not confined to just helping out their own club. Their help can be given to any

Circle K club in or outside of WUM. The form is mostly essay based so make sure that

when you are writing them to answer each question fully. Also, as a way to spice up

your award form, include examples that support the information in your essays. These

examples could include, but are not limited to, awards, certificates, or pictures.

“Interclub Award”

Interclubs are an important part of district unity and fostering our fellowship tenet.

It is important to remember the definition of an interclub:

(i) a meeting staged by one (1) or more K-Family clubs (including clubs

information), with at least one other K-Family club in attendance, each

having two or more members present.

Start totaling them now and keep a running count until January when the awards

are due. Mark them down as they happen because no interclub will be counted

unless it is on the table. Follow the instructions and fill the table in completely. If

you have questions, please ask me – it’s what I’m here for. All numbers will be

verified upon submission.

The official forms were given to club presidents at MAC, are available on the

district website and can be emailed if needed. Any event held between April 1st, 2014

and January 20th, 2015 is eligible. The awards must be postmarked by January 20th,

2015. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]. I

challenge each club to submit at least one award. Good luck!

Retention Ideas

>When working on retention, your ultimate goal is to get members to come back semester after semester, year after year. Retaining members can be a difficult task, but implementing a few retention strategies can help your club retain members! Below you will find a few retention ideas that your club can use starting this semester!

>>>Conduct Member Surveys

Give your members a survey to fill out so they can express their opinion about meetings, events, socials, and any other concerns. Get input on what service projects your member would like to do as well as what they would like to see the club do at meetings. It is important that your members feel as if their voice is being heard. After you receive feedback, have an executive board meeting to go over the feedback and put in a plan of action to implement changes suggested on the surveys. Make sure to go over what the action plan is so members know their opinions are not only heard, but that they matter.

>>>Recognize Your Members

Members like to know that they are appreciated! There are many ways that you can recognize your members by creating a “Member of the Month” award, a “Service Hour” award, a “Service Start of the Week” award etc. that you can give to members. Other ways to recognize members is to give new members a “Welcome Shout Out” in your newsletter, weekly updates or at meetings where new members introduce themselves and you welcome them to the group. Get creative!

>>>Get Members Involved

Circle K is all about promoting service and leadership, so be sure to encourage members to take on a leadership position. Besides encouraging members to attend meetings and events, encourage members to run for executive board positions, join a committee or apply to be a committee chair. Invite members to help set up for events early or allow a member to plan a service project. Remember to always fit jobs to people not people to jobs. Let members do what they are going to like and succeed at. In addition, allowing members to participate in brainstorming and helping with general club activities is a great way to get members involved in the planning process!

Page 9: Circle of Sharing: November 2014

>>>Make Meetings Fun!

People love attending fun meetings! Make it a point to have themed meetings; some ideas are: “Nacho Ordinary Meeting”, “Luau” and “Superhero”. Get creative and get your members’ input! Another great idea to spice meetings up is to have “Fellowship Meetings”. Fellowship meetings can be done every other meeting or once a month. At a fellowship meeting you keep official business to a minimum (5-10 minutes) and focus on fellowship! This includes food, a service project, icebreakers and other fun things like music! It is a great way to get members together while doing a little service project.

>>> Do Icebreakers at Meetings and Socials

Icebreakers are a great way to get members loosened up and communicating. An icebreaker is extremely beneficial to do at every meeting because it can help people get to know each other, learn more about working together and most importantly they can be a ton of fun!

>>>Plan a Wide Range of Events for Members

The awesome thing about Circle K is that we are not limited to one set of service projects- we can do whatever we want! Be sure to give your members a wide range of service projects and socials to mix things up. While river clean ups are fun, nobody wants to clean rivers every weekend when there are so many other projects to do! Be sure to talk to your members and get their input on what service projects and events they would like to do.

>>>Re-Invite Members That Are Inactive

If you have members that are inactive, make it a point to reach out to them and invite them to the next meeting or service project. Be sure to make them feel extra welcome and answer any questions they have about upcoming events and

club logistics.

If you are having issues with retention or would like more specific ideas for your club, contact your Lieutenant Governor or Membership, Development and Growth Chair Jordan Grapentine at [email protected]

By: Jessi Dercks, UW-Madison Fundraising Chair

This year UW-Madison Circle K kicked off its fourth annual Big

Ten Food Fight, running October 25th through November 2nd. This

was the first year the competition encompassed two weekends, in an

effort to expand the opportunities for participating clubs to find more

ways to raise more food. The clubs that were interested in

participating this year were Ohio State, Rutgers, Michigan, Michigan

State, Indiana, and Iowa. The purpose of this competition was to

utilize some Big Ten rivalry as a means of raising large amounts of

food to aid the fight against hunger. Schools were responsible for

creating their own events throughout the designated week and then for

donating their raised food to the charity or organization of their choice.

The effects of this year’s Food Fight were felt across the Midwest all

the way to the East Coast!

The UW Madison Circle K club had a busy week participating in

the competition. The week began with event we refer to as “bagging

and tagging.” Members went out into the residential areas outside of

campus and left bags and fliers on the doorsteps of residents to let

them know about our purpose for the food drive, as well as to where

to food would be going. Members came back through the

neighborhood exactly one week later to pick up goods from those that

were generous to support our cause.

BIG TEN FOOD FIGHT

Page 11: Circle of Sharing: November 2014

Halfway through the week, the club held our annual Board vs.

Member Food Drive during our weekly meeting. On the line was an ice

cream party for all of our members, should they bring enough food to

beat out the board. The competition was close, but unfortunately for

the members, the board pulled through with the victory.

Our final plan of attack took place on the final day of the

competition when we paired with one of our local food pantries, The

River Food Pantry, to host an event outside of a grocery store called

“Stuff a Truck.” It was great to see so many people not only donate to

our cause, but to also take note of how they could contribute in the

future. After only a few hours at the store, we were able to collect 111

pounds of food!

We’d like to give a huge shout out to Ohio State University’s

Circle K club for taking this year’s Food Fight Champion title with 28.8

points per member! (One point per pound and 2.5 points per dollar

were divided across the club's total membership.) Iowa came in

second place with 8.4 points per member and UW-Madison was third

with 7.4 points per member. Overall, the Big Ten Food Fight collected

665 pounds of food and raised $365 in donations. Great job everyone!

Kiwanis Family Service Day

EXTENDED DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 18TH @ 11:59 P.M.

by Matthew L. Bowe, Doctor of Service

On a cool and blustery November day, November 8 to be exact, 82 members of the Kiwanis Family trekked to the Stevens Point and Plover community to volunteer their time, effort, and services. Beginning in Plover at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, members raked leaves, tilled raised vegetable

gardens, cleaned a mini bus, and stained a picnic bench. At the Humane Society nearby, members literally dug a trench (I was not

kidding!) as a landscaping project. Back in Stevens Point at the Children’s Museum, members stuffed and licked

envelopes, cleaned rooms, and painted. The campus and community cleanup crew spent the day interestingly; they picked up trash…and purchased an oil change, filled air into car tires, and cleaned out a member’s car. Finally, back at the Schmeeckle Reserve, members touched up benches by painting and then went outside to remove invasive buckthorn. All in all, a very good day of service

performed by wonderful participants.

As I near completing writing this article, I must mention that this event is not quite yet finished. First, I must thank everybody who came and travelled many miles to support the Stevens Point and Plover communities and the newly reactivated UW-Stevens Point club! Also, I thank my committee members for the many meetings, the poster, and the registration

form. I thank the district board members for the scrumptious desserts. I thank Janet for the help the day of and Sara for her help as Treasurer. Second, please be prepared for the event

feedback form. I ask that you please take the time to carefully, truthfully, and thoughtfully fill out the feedback form. Finally, if you have any questions about the decisions made into this event, please email me at [email protected].

Now, I look forward to seeing everybody at the rest of our District events for the year (Kiwanis Family Hockey Night, Winter Weekend Getaway, and District Convention). Remember that service can be small or big, and if you want to become more involved with service, come and join my committee.

Service never ends, and our task is to help whenever possible. Therefore, go out, always lending a hand.

Dates: January 3rd-10th Location: Taos, New Mexico

Every year, the members at UW-Eau

Claire work hard to put together a unique opportunity to take a trip and

work with Habitat for Humanity in

another state. This year, our club has reserved spots in Taos, NM and we’re

very excited about it!

We currently have 27 students from all over the district signed up to join us for

this trip, and 30 total spots reserved. This means that there is still room for YOU

to join us!

We will be working on finishing up the home of the Mares family, working at the

Restore place, and possibly getting a start on another home right next door!

Here’s some information about the family from the Habitat Volunteer Coordinator

we’ve been working with:

Adriana is 34 years old, and she's the Supervisor of the

Customer Service Desk at Albertson's Grocery -- she's been there for 11 years. She's divorced -- her ex-husband is still an

important part of Daniel and Danika's lives -- but she supports

her family on her income at Albertson's, which is around $11.85 per hour. They live in a trailer in Arroyo Hondo, which is a town

about 20 minutes north of Taos.

Last year we worked in Lafayette, LA, and got a lot of great opportunities to talk

to different people volunteering in order to have their own homes built by

Habitat for Humanity. Each of them has their own unique story and they love seeing college students taking time and money in order to make the trip to help

them!

Please consider joining us for this great trip! If you have any questions, please

don’t hesitate to contact Kirstie Polzin ([email protected]) and she will get

back to you as soon as possible.

Remembers of WUM, I invite you all to attend this year’s Winter Weekend Getaway being held in the Frozen city of Escanaba, MI. This event is being held the weekend of January 16th-18th. We have planned a weekend of fun, service, and good food!

Though the weather may be frigid up here in the Upper Peninsula we encourage you to bring your swim wear along with you as the hotel has a pool and hot tub accommodations. Though swim wear will not be the ideal attire for all activities during the weekend. We have a variety of different service options in the making including volunteering at the Salvation Army or visiting people in the nursing homes.

A variety of food options will be available for all dietary needs. If you have restrictions please let us know and we shall accommodate you to the best of our abilities. Friday night you will see many dinner options as you pass through town on your way to the hotel. Sunday morning the hotel offers breakfast to all its guest but we also have restaurant options and a local donut shop. We also plan on having a luncheon that afternoon with members of the local K-Family. Gluten free and vegetarian options will be available at every meal.

We also plan to offer a dish native to the U.P. It’s called a pastie and a local shop has made the best in the area, and they also sell U.P. memorabilia for those that wish for a souvenir from their journey. Bring some extra cash on hand for a local candy shop that offers sweets in a variety of forms.

I am eager to see all of you and give you all the real Yooper experience! You can find the registration form to your right. In order to reserve a hotel room, please call Super 8 at 906-786-1000. DISTRICT CONVENTION: DIVERGENT FACTIONS

There are many things that differentiate the factions. Being in your faction

does not simply define how you act, but what you wear, eat, do for fun, and what

jobs you have. Each faction has its own piece of society, in a sense, and its own

way of life. To prepare yourself for your aptitude test, learning some things about

the different factions may be very important. What you test in will determine who

you will become DCON, so understanding what that means is important to

understanding yourself and how you can better effect change and prosperity in

the world.

If you are interested in taking your aptitude test today, email DCON Chair

Samantha Robinson at [email protected] and she will go over the

aptitude test with you as well as your results!

ABNEGATION FACTION DEFINITION: [Pronounced: Ab-neg-ay-shun] l. to refuse or deny

oneself (some rights, conveniences, etc.); reject; renounce. 2. to

relinquish; give up. --active forms of stripping things from your life. As

opposed to relinquish, give up-- more passive.

HISTORY: Abnegation was formed by those who blamed selfishness

for human nature's errors. They believe in selfless actions and

attaining peace through the elimination of selfishness. By doing so, they choose to

completely forget themselves and only serve others.

TRAITS: Sit quietly and wait. Bow heads, a sign of respect, when greeting each

other. Not manipulative, but not forthright. Their morally incorruptible quality makes

them the only reasonable faction to be able to govern the city as political leaders.

DAUNTLESS FACTION

DEFINITION: [Pronounced: Dawn-t-less] Fearless, undaunted.

Courageously resolute, especially in the face of danger or difficulty;

not discouraged. Undaunted: resolute, especially in the face of

danger. Note: Being fearless and being undaunted are two

different things.

HISTORY: Dauntless was a faction formed by those who blamed

cowardice for society's problems. The only answer is to face your fears and find

bravery.

TRAITS: Loud, expressive. Bravery, courage, fighting and physical skills. In charge

of security, their primary purpose is to guard the fence that surrounds the city.

They began guarding the fence five years prior. Before that they patrolled

the factionless sector.

18

Page 19: Circle of Sharing: November 2014

19

ERUDITE FACTION

DEFINITION: [Pronounced: Air-yoo-dyte] Characterized by great

knowledge; learned or scholarly. The word "erudite" focuses on

knowledge rather than intelligence-- intelligence being something

you're born with, and can't necessarily control, and knowledge

being something that you acquire.

HISTORY: Erudite was formed by those who blamed human

ignorance for the faults of society. They formed Erudite as a way of eliminating

ignorance and darkness from human minds.

TRAITS: Chat about books and newspapers; in constant pursuit of knowledge.

Curiosity, which drives them to seek knowledge. The faction produces most of the

city's librarians, doctors, scientists, & teachers. They keep records of the city & the

factions. Most technological advances are due to Erudite, including all of the

simulation serums.

AMITY FACTION

DEFINITION: [Pronounced: Am-it-ee] l. friendship; peaceful

harmony. 2. mutual understanding and a peaceful relationship,

especially between nations; peace; accord. 3. cordiality. It's not

just about and apple-picking. It’s about cultivating strong

relationships and trying to understand each other.

HISTORY: Amity is the faction that dislikes war. They formed Amity

in order to have a peaceful society free from conflict and sadness caused by

wars and instigation. They are truly a democratic faction, voting on everything,

almost unanimously.

TRAITS: They love music, art, games, and laughter. They give hugs when

greeting. They vote on everything, almost unanimously. Their bread has peace

serum added to prevent their members from fighting. Amity's essential nature

comes from its crop-growing. They run the farms, which provides some of the food

for all the factions. They tend to be counselors, caretakers & artists.

CANDOR FACTION

DEFINITION: [Pronounced: Can-der]; l. the state or quality of

being frank, open, and sincere in speech or expression; candidness.

2. freedom from bias; fairness; impartiality. The faction is not just

trying to develop honesty, they're also trying to develop

impartiality.

HISTORY: Candor was a faction formed by those who blamed

duplicity and deception, who believed that dishonesty is the key fault in human

nature which began evil and war. They believe in the principle that honesty and

openness would lead to a more peaceful and perfect society.

TRAITS: Honest, trustworthy, and able to read body language to detect lies.

They greet each other by shaking hands. They provide sound leaders in Law.

UW-STEVENS POINT My name is Jennifer Anderson

Richmond and I am the UW-Stevens

Point academic staff advisor for Circle

K. I honestly don’t remember when I

became involved in Circle K, though I

do know it was a few years ago. I’ve seen

the group change in size and personality

over the years, but I have to say that the

past two year’s group has been the best.

I am Apoorva, I like to dance,

read, swim, sing and be sassy! I

also like helping people as much as

I can. I am proud to be a part of

Circle K and I am glad I have the

opportunity to learn about this

My name is Elizabeth Le and I am a sophomore at

the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point with an

undeclared major. My number one hobby is trying to

make people happy! As the outreach chairperson

for the UWSP Circle K International, I get to send

out emails which I absolutely love doing! I'm always

looking forward to district events because we learn so

much about ways to improve ourselves as leaders and

our organizations, as well.

My name is Shelby Bowe, and I am

a Junior/Senior at the University of

Wisconsin Stevens Point. My

position on Circle K is Vice

President. My favorite service

project so far has been DCON

because I enjoy the atmosphere of

dressing up, being with my fellow

Circle K'ers, and see the

accomplishments of all the Circle

Ks throughout the year!

My name is Sam Brewington, I am the President of UWSP Circle K. I truly do live to serve, and

love to serve. I came into the Kiwanis family back in 2009 when I was a freshman in Central High

School. I joined the club because I thought making keys would be pretty cool, little did I know I

would be in for such a long journey having little to do with keys. I am a happy person who looks

for ways to make others days just as bright as mine. This spring I will be studying abroad with

UWSP to Spain. I am very excited to live out my long-term dream of immersing myself in a

completely new culture for an extended period of time! I plan on staying in Circle K after my

return to continue helping UWSP’s Circle K grow and succeed!

Letter from the Editor

Dearest WUM Members,

I hope your semester is going swimmingly! I have been

super busy these past few weeks. Between Circle K work, academic

studies, and holding an RA position, life has certainly kept me

active! Edgewood Circle K has been working hard with local

Kiwanis and Aktion Clubs to foster service in the communities. I

am so proud! Today, Edgewood Circle K hosted an “Eat to

Eliminate” event, which was a potluck style dinner that benefited the Eliminated Project.

Members from UW-Milwaukee, Alverno College, and UW-Platteville attended, and we raised

more than $85! The lovely Janet DeGroot graced us with her presence as well, which was so

very appreciated!

As winter approaches, it is important to keep in mind those who do not consistently

have warm food in their bellies or warm homes to return to at night. Most of us are very

blessed and privileged in the sense that we have all the amenities one could need in the frigid

Wisconsin winter. However, not all of our neighbors may have that same comfort in their

lives. Keep this in mind while you reach out to your communities in the coming months—

look for opportunities to donate warm clothing, volunteer at warming shelters, or sponsor a

child for holiday season.

Yours in Service,

Marissa Blackmore
