A MESSAGE REGARDING AESOP (Automated Substitute Placement & Absence Management)

Welcome! Cinnaminson Township Public Schools has implemented a new automated service (AESOP) that will greatly simplify and streamline the process of notifying you when your services are needed in the District. This service utilizes both the Phone and the Internet to assist you in locating jobs in the School District for which you work. The Administration has selected the following hours as standard call times when the service may call for substitutes: 5:30 a.m. – 11:59 a.m.; 6:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. You may interact with the system either on the Internet at www.aesoponline.com or by way of a Toll Free, automated voice instruction menu system at 1-800-942-3767 (1-800-94-AESOP). When the system calls you – you may be prompted to enter either a PIN number and/or Identification (ID) number. This information will be listed on your substitute appointment letter. The system will provide you with the following details of the assignment: School name, Date(s) of assignment, Room or location where you need to report, Start time, and any further special instructions left by the absentee. You will then be prompted to accept or reject the assignment. If you accept the assignment, the system will issue you a confirmation number that you might need in the event of a follow-up inquiry. Remember: you have not accepted the job until you receive a confirmation number. Note: You may also contact the system to search for available jobs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on the Internet website and/or toll free telephone number listed above. We are pleased to have your services as a substitute and appreciate your interest in our school district. Sincerely,

Stephen M. Cappello

APPLICANT MUST SHOW PROOF OF MANTOUX BEFORE BEING BOARD APPROVED

In accordance with the rules adopted by the State Department of Education in connection with N.J.S.A. 18A:16-2 (11/1/88), a Mantoux intradermal tuberculin test shall be given upon employment to all newly hired employees (full-time and part-time), school bus drivers furnished by contracted companies, school bus drivers on contract with the District, all student teachers and other persons who have contact with pupils. An employee with a documented Mantoux test administered within the previous six months does not have to be re-tested. An employee transferring between school districts within New Jersey would not have to be tuberculin tested if there is documented record of a Mantoux tuberculin skin test being administered upon his or her initial employment in a New Jersey public school. Individuals who are currently employed on the effective date of this amendment shall also be tuberculin tested if there is no valid record that a Mantoux tuberculin test was administered during the previous four years. An employee shall be exempt from these requirements upon presentation of documentation of a prior significant reaction evidenced by vesiculation following the administration of a multiple puncture tuberculin test or a significant reaction (that is, 10 mm or more of induration) following a Mantoux intradermal tuberculin test with five tuberculin units of stabilized PPD tuberculin. Any other exemption from these requirements shall be because of medical contraindications subject to review by the medical examiner. Please provide our office with proof of Mantoux results or make arrangements to have this test administered. If an applicant has a history of a positive reaction, the documentation submitted should contain a specific statement from their physician that the applicant does not have active disease. Please contact our Personnel Office for the form entitled “Statement of Non-Infectiousness for Symptomatic Individual”, which needs to be completed by your Physician. If you have any questions concerning this test, please do not hesitate to contact the Personnel Office. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

SMOKING ON SCHOOL PREMISES PROHIBITED

3219 Smoking on School Premises Prohibited The Board of Education believes that the right of persons to smoke must be balanced against the right of the nonsmoker to breathe air untainted by tobacco smoke. To protect pupils and employees who choose not to smoke from an environment noxious to them and potentially damaging to their health and as provided by law, no person shall smoke any tobacco or tobacco product anytime within any building owned or occupied by the Cinnaminson Township Board of Education. This prohibition shall extend so that no smoking is permitted in the Cinnaminson High School, Cinnaminson Middle School, New Albany Elementary School, Rush Intermediate School, Memorial School/Administrative Offices and such other school buildings as may be owned or occupied by the school district. The Board further prohibits smoking on school grounds and within school buildings except as part of a specific classroom instruction or a theatrical production, in which cases, the use of smoking must be approved by the Principal. For purposes of this policy, "smoking" means the burning of a lighted cigar, cigarette, pipe or any other matter or substance. For purposes of this policy, "Tobacco" also includes chewing tobacco and snuff. Notice that smoking is prohibited in school district buildings and on school grounds will be posted at each public entrance in accordance with law. The Principal of each school building is authorized to report violations, by law, to the Board of Health. Pupils and district employees who violate the provisions of this policy shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary measures. Adopted: 11 April 2000 Revised: June 18, 2002

DISCIPLINE Principals, teachers and parents may have many different approaches to student discipline. Nevertheless, there are some general observations that may help you deal with children and their behavior. 1. Corporal Punishment

New Jersey Law is very explicit about the infliction of Corporal Punishment upon a student. It states:

"No person employed or engaged in a school or educational institution, whether public or private, shall inflict or cause to be inflicted Corporal Punishment upon a pupil attending such school or institution; but any such person may, within the scope of his employment, use and apply such amounts of force as is reasonable and necessary:

1. to quell a disturbance, threatening physical injury to others;

2. to obtain possession of weapons or other dangerous objects upon the person or witness the control of the pupil;

3. for the purpose of self-defense and 4. for the protection of property;

and such acts, or any of them, shall not be construed to constitute Corporal Punishment within the meaning and intendment of this section. Every resolution, by law, rule, ordinance, or other act or authority permitting or authorizing Corporal Punishment to be inflicted upon a pupil attending a school or educational institution shall be void." (N.J.S.A. 18A:6-1)

STATUS OF THE SUBSTITUTE TEACHER As a substitute teacher, you are a professional employee of the Cinnaminson Township Board of Education and, consequently, are governed by all policies of the Board and by professional ethics. "BAG OF TRICKS" Substitute teachers are encouraged to gather all types of techniques to utilize in the teaching/learning situation. These can stem from personal successful experiences, from observing master teachers, or from insight into the nature of learning. With greater understanding of the teaching/learning process comes flexibility, which will enable the substitute teacher to successfully apply his/her talents to different subject matter areas, different pupils, and different situations.

SUGGESTIONS OF A GENERAL NATURE FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN 1. Respect the "feelings" of a child. 2. Never reject a child. 3. Never criticize or reprimand a child in front of others. 4. Use a positive approach - encourage at all times. 5. Keep anecdotal records of significant and specific acts. 6. Always have a stimulating classroom environment: books, bulletin boards, centers of

interest, tools, equipment, materials. 7. Don't make a crisis of everything. 8. Keep your voice low, clear and firm. Don't shout or raise your voice to a high pitch. 9. Be fair, unemotional and calm. 10. Avoid being placed on the "defensive" - don't argue with children. 11. Discuss actions, not personalities. 12. Use punishment sparingly. 13. Don't show negative feelings toward a child. Always let him/her know that you like

him/her. 14. Don't make quick diagnoses. 15. Don't accuse or threaten. You may have to carry out something that is impossible or

impractical. 16. Use the principal as a resource person. Consult him/her often. Make no major

decisions without his/her guidance, suggestions and approval. 17. Request outside resource help. Don't "go it alone." 18. Listen more than you talk. You may learn something.
