Prince Edward, I am not going to the ball and that is final! Edward I agree that your parents sometimes treat you like you're a little boy. Prince I'm still not going. Edward I agree that your parents should have talked to you about the ball. Prince Don't try to change my mind. Edward All I'm asking is that you think about the young ladies. They will be so disappointed. Prince They'll get over it! Edward And the only reason they would even go to a ball is ... Prince Let me guess ... to get dressed up? Edward That, (pausing) and to dance with you. Prince Now, that is exactly the reason I am not going!!! Edward You'll only have to dance with a few. Prince And how many is a few? Edward (mumbling) Prince What was that? Edward (mumbling again) Prince Edward, quit mumbling and tell me. Edward Two hundred.

Prince (He starts laughing.) Edward, you are so funny. I thought I just heard you say "two hundred."

Edward I did, sire. Maybe a little less. Prince Or maybe a little more! Why, I ...

Edward Well, if you’re not going to the ball. I guess we'd better go and tell your parents that you will not be there. (He starts to leave. Prince is hesitant. King and Queen enter)

Edward Ah, your majesties. We were just on our way to find you.QUEEN Ah, Albert, my dear! Did you sleep well? PRINCE Mother, I ... KING You know, son, you are not setting a very good example by sleeping in so late. PRINCE Father, I ... QUEEN Albert, tuck in your shirt and look presentable when you speak to your father. PRINCE Mother ... KING Albert! Don't speak to your mother in that tone of voice. PRINCE Father ... QUEEN Albert! Don't talk to your father that way. PRINCE Mother, I ...

KING (to Queen) I knew we should have sent him away to military school. But noooooooo! You had to have your way.

Page 22: Cinderella Adapted for classrooms

Cind-PP-22

QUEEN My way? If it had been left up to you, little Albert would have ... PRINCE STOP! (pause) Can't you stop talking for one minute? QUEEN Albert? (sympathetically) Albert, what is wrong? PRINCE Everything! KING How can that be? Do we not feed you? PRINCE Yes, Father. KING Do we not clothe you? PRINCE Yes, Father. KING Is there not a roof over your head? PRINCE Yes, Father. KING Then, what is the PROBLEM? PRINCE You treat me like a little kid. QUEEN (looking shocked) We what? PRINCE You treat me like I'm five years old. QUEEN That is not true, Albert.

PRINCE Yes, it is, Mother! You tell me when to get up, how to dress, and what to eat. And now, you're even giving a ball for my nineteenth birthday and I just told you last week that I wanted a small birthday party.

KING But, we thought this would make you happy. PRINCE Well, it doesn't! QUEEN We want you to be happy. PRINCE I am happy!

KING WHAT? Albert, you are not making sense. First you tell us that you're unhappy and then in the next sentence you tell us that you're happy. (to Queen Philomena) This generation is making me crazy.

QUEEN Albert, darling, what was it that you wanted to tell us? PRINCE Never mind! You just wouldn't understand. (He storms offstage)

Song: This Generation (King, Queen, Edward)

King You go and finish preparing for the ball, my love. I’m going to take a little walk and get some fresh air. Edward, will you please check on Albert and see if he would care to join me for a walk?

Edward Yes, your majesty

(He beings to exit. Queen follows after him..)

Queen Good idea. Then Edward, I need you to double check with the kitchen staff. I’m still not convinced that we have enough food for our guests…

Edward Yes, your majesty.

(Queen and Edward exit. King paces a bit, figuring out what he’s going to say to Prince. Prince enters)

PRINCE Hello, father.

KING Oh, hello, my boy. (Crossing to him.) Albert, how are you feeling?

PRINCE Fine, father. KING Are you getting enough sleep, son? You seem a bit edgy, lately.PRINCE It seems to me, sir, that you look a little tired. KING (Grouchily, crossing downstage.) I am tired, when I think of that darn ball.

(The QUEEN re-enters upstage left, unseen by the KING and PRINCE. Hearing the words about the ball, she steps back to eavesdrop on their conversation.)

PRINCE (Crossing downstage to the KING.) Oh, that. Well, to tell you the truth, sir, it isn't a night I'm looking forward to. Dancing with all those .... candidates.

KING Candidates?

Page 24: Cinderella Adapted for classrooms

Cind-PP-24

PRINCE Every simpering girl in the Kingdom, each one determined to show that she would be the perfect princess for me.

KING Yes, I know how you feel, my boy. But your mother's got her heart set on this affair. PRINCE I know. KING So it's best not to let her know how we feel. It would break her heart.

(The QUEEN crosses into the room.)

QUEEN (As if surprised to see the PRINCE.) Oh - hello, my dear. PRINCE Mother. I was just saying how much I'm looking forward to the ball. It sounds wonderful. QUEEN (Smiling) Does it? PRINCE Yes. I was wondering if I could help with any of the preparations. QUEEN (Pretending to be taken in by these fumbling men.) Well, yes, dear. Maybe you can.

(There is a very awkward silence as she looks from one to the other, and neither knows what more to say about it, or how to carry the lie on any further.)

PRINCE Well ... see you later.

(He turns and on his way out of the room, stops to kiss his MOTHER on both cheeks. Then, he waves airily to his FATHER and exits upstage left. The QUEEN, not offended by their deceit, but touched by it, takes a hanky from her sleeve and dabs her nose.)

KING Getting a cold?

(The QUEEN shakes her head “yes”.)

Better take something for it. (She nods.)

Don't want to have a red nose at the ball.

QUEEN I'll be over it by then. (She takes his arm and they exit.)
