Jean N. lnkrot Retired Member, Board of Trustees

Cincinnati Technical College

Jean N. lnkrot was first appointed to the Cincinnati Technical College Board of Trustees in 1980 by the Cincinnati Board of Education. She served as a trustee until September 1990.

Mrs. lnkrot played an active role in the Board's search for a new College president in 1989. She served as a liaison with the College's neighbors in Clifton.

Mrs. lnkrot and her husband have been active members of the Clifton community for 45 years. They owned Lance's Bookstore on Calhoun Street for more than forty years. Mrs. lnkrot was a successful entrepreneur in her own right having operated the highly successful Lance's Gift Shop on Ludlow Avenue until she sold the enterprise in 1989.

Mrs. lnkrot is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati.

Theresa C. Henderson Principal, Hoffman Elementary School

Theresa C. Henderson has been a teacher, assistant principal and principal in the Cincinnati Public Schools for over thirty years. Under her leadership Hoffman Elementary School was awarded the U.S. Department of Education's Excellence in Education honor.

In 1990, The Cincinnati Enquirer named Mrs. Henderson a Woman of the Year. She has received a community service award from Fifth Third Bank, a partnership award and an outstanding achievement award from The Black Male Coalition, and the excellence in education award from the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

Mrs. Henderson is a member of the board of trustees of the Cincinnati Opera, Leadership Cincinnati, AHEAD (A Higher Education Against Drugs) and Community Comprehensive Child Care. She is a past member of the board of the Contemporary Arts Center, Enjoy The Arts, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and the Cincinnati Arts Consortium. She served as president of the Cincinnati Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. and as secretary to The Links, Inc. She has chaired the Ebony Fashion Fair and the special events committee of the Oscar Robertson Celebrity Tennis Tournament.

Mrs. Henderson has undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Cincinnati.

Dwight Tillery Mayor

City of Cincinnati

Dwight Tillery became the first popularly elected black mayor of Cincinnati in November 1991. This accomplishment came after serving less then one year on Cincinnati City Council.

A practicing attorney, Mayor Tillery received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan. Mayor Tillery has held several professional positions, including assistant professor at the Miami University School of Business, senior assistant attorney general for the State of Ohio, assistant executive vice president at the University of Cincinnati, and assistant city solicitor for the City of Cincinnati. He is currently associated with the law firm of Waite, Schneider, Bayless and Chesley Co., LP.A. He is licensed to practice law in the state of Ohio, the Federal District Court of Ohio, the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Mayor Tillery has been active in many civic and professional organizations such as Ohio's Dr. Martin Luther King Board, the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, the Cincinnati Board of Health, the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation, the Central Community Health Board, the United Negro College Fund, and the NAACP.

Academic Dress

From the costumes worn in the academic procession one can tell the level of degree (associate's, bachelor's, master's doctor's) the wearer has earned, the field of learning, and the institution that granted the degree. The costume consists of cap, gown and hood.

The usual cap is a square black mortarboard with a black tassel; the doctor's cap has a gold tassel. The gown is also normally black. Associate's, bachelor's and master's gowns are relatively plain and closed in front; the doctor's gown is cut fuller, is open in front, and has velvet panels down the front and has three velvet bars on the sleeves. The panels and bars are usually black.

The hood, patterned after the medieval monk's hood, goes over the shoulders and hangs down in back. The hoods for the three degrees vary in length from the bachelor's the shortest, to the doctor's the longest. The velvet border shows by its color the field of learning; the most common are: white - arts, letters, humanities (usually seen in honorary doctor's degrees); dark blue - philosophy (the most common in doctor's hoods); purple - law; scarlet - theology; green - medicine; golden yellow - science. The same colors may be used in the panels and bars of the gown. The most distinctive part of the costume is the silk lining of the hood which bears the official colors of the institution granting the degree.
