Promise Statement

Centered in the shared love of Christ,

Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy is the college-preparatory,

preschool through grade 12 independent school

that inspires and challenges students to discover, hone,

and steward their one-of-a-kind gifts

as they come to know themselves as distinct

and unconditionally loved creations of God.

CHCA’s vibrant, multi-denominational family of learners

creates a sheltering—but not sheltered—

environment where, supporting each other and guided

by expert Christian teachers,

students wrestle with increasingly complex,

timeless, essential questions in order

to strengthen their minds and their faith.

Beginning with the end in mind, CHCA graduates

young adults fully prepared to succeed in college and beyond;

to engage effectively and lovingly with different cultures,

viewpoints, and ideas; and to achieve significant impact

and influence with discerning wisdom, courageous curiosity,

and resilient Christian faith—

where others pull back, they lean into life.

A Message from the Board of Trustees Finance CommitteeOn behalf of the Board of Trustees Finance Committee, we are pleased to report that once again our independent auditor, BKD, LLP, issued a “clean” opinion regarding CHCA’s financial statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013. This clean opinion signified the auditor’s belief that our financial statements accurately represent the financial position of CHCA. You will see portions of the financial statements included within this Financial Report. You may review BKD’s full audit report by contacting CHCA’s CFO Mike Wallace in the business office at (513) 247-0900.

As we continued to manage through economically challenging times, our school administrators, department heads and staff worked tirelessly and diligently to provide our students the best educational experience available, while staying within our established budget. We are extremely blessed to have such a dedicated and credible financial team partnering with them. Mike and his staff are to be commended on a job well done once again this past year.

As you will see within this report, CHCA’s fiscal sustainability rests on full, optimal enrollment. Your Board is dedicated to not only providing a high quality and full service educational experience, but one that is compelling and available to more mission-fit families in our community. We are thankful for the establishment of Strategic Funds that have allowed investment in various initiatives designed to promote enrollment. We will continue to make enrollment a top priority in the coming years.

As we move forward, we assure you that the Board remains focused on maintaining the highest level of education in a Christ-centered institution stressing academic excellence. We ask for your continued prayers over our community and welcome your input via our annual public budget meeting.

Mike Wallace, Chief Financial Officer, CHCA and Evan Andrews, 2012 - 2013 Board Treasurer

Message from the Board of Trustees President While serving as President of the CHCA Board of Trustees during the 2012-13 school year, I co-authored with Randy Brunk a newsletter detailing elements of the Board’s strategic work. Elsewhere in this report, Randy and current Board President Greg Simpson share more about the continuation of that work this year and into the future. Rather than repeat those details, I’ll instead offer a “year-in-review” perspective through three observations that I hope will provide an inside view of the big ideas that drove much of the Board’s discussion and work last year, and will continue to do so moving forward:

Christ is at the center, now and always The gospel of Jesus Christ is the Good News, not only of God’s salvation of humanity, but of the radical restoration and remaking of all of Creation through the power of the risen Lord who makes all things new. Christians are called to take this Gospel “into all the world” – to all peoples, cultures,

and geographies. As an academic institution, CHCA exists to prepare students to help fulfill that mission - learning, leading, and serving in Christ-centered ways, not only in school but throughout their lives. Thus, we aim to challenge our students to think deeply about how our theology shapes their engagement with God’s world. We encourage them to discover and hone their unique God-given gifts and to think strategically about the role of Christ’s ambassadors – His agents of grace and restoration in a complex and broken world. We challenge those who will embrace the call to consider what Christ-centered engagement looks like in the realms of art, science, medicine, journalism, commerce, education, law, government, and social services. We pray that their immersion in a Christ-centered learning community will help our students reject the false dichotomy between sacred and secular, recognize Christ’s lordship over all creation, and obey His call to love Him with heart, soul, mind, and strength in every sphere of life.

We must continue striving for excellenceWe aspire to be a great school in all respects, not only with reference to Christian schools, but to all college preparatory schools. While being Christian is absolutely essential to our calling as a Christian Academy, we do not want to lower the standard of excellence for which we strive by limiting our comparative set to only include other Christian schools. Our aim is not to be excellent “for a Christian school”, but to be excellent both as a college preparatory school and as one that intentionally and unreservedly holds Christ as the center of all that we strive to be and do as an educational institution. That aim obligates us to strive for continuous improvement in the face of ever-changing opportunities created as needs in the family change, as research reveals new insights into learning, and as technology opens new worlds. Sometimes those changes (and others in the competitive landscape) create not only “opportunities”, but also strategic “imperatives” – initiatives driven by necessity to ensure the continued operational success of the school. Through prayer and much careful consideration, we continue to seek God’s blessing on our efforts to “work with all of our heart” at the task of pursuing the excellence to which we believe He has called us.

Brian Gardner, 2012 - 2013 Board President

6

Page 9: Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy Annual Report 2012-2013

True excellence compels us to be inclusiveBoth in order to be academically excellent, and in order to be Christ-centered, we must necessarily be diligent about including in our community students and families that represent the broad diversity of God’s family. Because of our commitment to academic excellence, we hold that diversity among our constituents is of strategic importance, providing an essential element of a program designed to prepare students to learn, lead, and serve in a diverse world. Thus, we aspire to foster a learning community that is broadly inclusive with respect to family size, race/ethnicity/nationality, denominational background, and economic position. Because of Christ’s call to generosity and because we value each person and his/her unique potential contributions to our vibrant community, we want to do all within our power to make the lifelong blessings of an academically excellent, Christ-centered college preparatory education available to every qualified student who desires it. We continue to prayerfully consider how, through prudent stewardship, the generosity of donors, and efforts toward achieving ideal enrollment, we can balance the demands of excellence with the aspiration to make CHCA welcoming and attainable for a richly diverse constituency.

It has been my great honor and privilege to serve the CHCA community through my work on the Board of Trustees. I hope that each of you who are a part of our community will join with me in praying that God will continue to bless and guide CHCA in the years ahead as He has so faithfully done in the past, allowing us to be part of His great work in the world, for His great glory.

CHCA Leadership Strategy:

The Six ImperativesIn the spring of 2013, the Board of Trustees adopted a comprehensive strategic plan encompassing six of our most promising opportunities, or imperatives, in the coming three to five years. While the timing and outcomes are somewhat individual to each imperative, work has begun on each one and we introduce you to them here.

Imperative One: A Fresh Way to Talk About CHCAW. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne revealed in their book, “Blue Ocean Strategy” that companies in highly competitive markets succeed by pursuing “blue oceans” of uncontested market space ripe for growth, rather than fighting for a limited share of shrinking markets. Given the national declining birth rate trend, the plethora of private schools in the Cincinnati area and a relatively flat rate of growth of school age children in our top zip codes, CHCA needs to seize on its nature as a very unique “blue ocean” educational opportunity in Cincinnati.

With that motivation in mind, the Board of Trustees decided to clearly define what it means to receive a CHCA education. What resulted is a very encouraging report that concluded with what we call the Promise Statement. We hope you will take some time to read this statement on the first pages of this report. This imperative involves getting the word out about what a CHCA education can mean to more students in the Cincinnati area. While we do not desire to grow beyond our optimal enrollment, we must have our classrooms filled with mission-fit students in order to continue the high quality education implied by that statement.

Ultimately, we believe our “blue ocean” is our Christ-centered environment which hosts a high quality academic program, engaging classrooms, smaller class sizes, and a full range of approachable extracurricular activities all geared towards whole child development. We recently toured a parent from a large local public school who remarked, “My son is so very talented but he just needs someone to recognize his gifts, encourage him to grow in faith, and learn more about who God created him to be…I sense that can happen here at CHCA.” Very few parents wouldn’t want that for their child.

This is not the creation of a sales pitch; it is the reflection of the real-life experience of students here at CHCA and it is the reason we have hope in the midst of changing demographics. In each grade level, we only need to capture the imagination a few families with this vision and we will achieve optimal enrollment, which in turn will enable us to minimize tuition increases while maintaining the caliber of our programming.

Imperative Two: Strategic CompensationOur faculty are of the highest quality and deserving of the best compensation that high performance instruction should offer. The administration has refined its articulation of excellence of teaching practice and we aim to compensate our faculty based on each individual’s ability to meet those high standards. We also desire an environment where those who possess particularly strong skills in one of the many domains of teaching proficiency be given the opportunity to share that expertise with others. This planned collaboration will most certainly result in a compensation system that rewards great teachers and encourages the best instructional quality in every classroom.

Gregory Simpson, current Board President and Randy Brunk, CHCA Head of School

8

Page 11: Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy Annual Report 2012-2013

Imperative Three: Enhancing a Great StartSeveral years ago, we realized that families were increasingly desiring high quality preschool services, and that families often tended to stay with the institution in which they began their educational journey. Because at that time we were without a preschool and missing a great opportunity, we decided in the spring of 2006 to begin a preschool journey of our own. It started with one section of five-day three-year-olds and two sections of five-day four-year-olds. That move proved to be very wise as we saw a rather profound jump in Kindergarten enrollments in subsequent years. We are once again at a crossroads as we have seen that our one section of three-year-olds is clearly not enough, and many also desire something other than a five-day option. Our imperative will contemplate additional preschool options and design elements more fitting of preschool than the current day school design employed at our Edyth B. Lindner Elementary School.

Imperative Four: Specializing in the Needs of the PreadolescentExperience and research tells us the needs of the preadolescent are very unique and worthy of special programming for this critical developmental stage. We believe the movement from the “nest” of the elementary school to middle school should be interrupted by a carefully designed, “Upper Elementary” program. Most 10-11 year olds are ready to branch out a bit, but still desire the comfort and nurture more indicative of their elementary years. Put quite simply, “We don’t want to push them out of the nest without a few carefully designed test flights!” Growing up is wonderful and inevitable but when forced too early, it can cause some unnecessary angst and can exacerbate an often-experienced insecurity. Programming changes to accommodate this reality are already in progress through faculty engagement and student interaction. Creating a unique physical space where this can happen will be the next helpful step in the process.

Imperative Five: The CHCA AthleteAcademic development is at the core of what we offer students at CHCA. However, we all know that growing and developing as a person involves much more than just academics. Athletics, the arts, leadership, service, spiritual development, and clubs (robotics, debate, scouts, etc.) all have a profound impact on the development of a child. Arguably, the largest of those extracurricular opportunities in terms of participation is athletics. The current experience with athletics can be quite variable; we believe that it can and should be consistent across all sports and all grade levels. We plan to articulate a compelling set of standards for coaches, players and parents that will help us deliver a consistently excellent experience accompanied by well-articulated developmental outcomes for all of our student-athletes. Our hope is that what students learn as a result of athletic participation will serve them well in whatever vocation they choose, and will help mold the type of people they become.

Imperative Six: Armleder at its BestWe are so proud of each of our four campuses that make up CHCA. Each has a very unique personality and yet each conforms to, and is deeply committed to, the overall CHCA mission and vision. Armleder is a wonderful and unique part of our family. Often called the “Jewel in the City”, Armleder is a beautiful embodiment of CHCA in an urban setting. Many families at Armleder are on scholarships supported by very robust endowments. But robust as they are, it has become increasingly clear that in order to see a continued flow of students from Armleder to the North Campus, more endowments are going to be necessary. It is our hope that as many of our Armleder sixth grade students who desire to do so will naturally matriculate to our north campus middle school and finish high school with a walk across the CHCA graduation stage.

Message from the Marketing & Communications Steering Committee

Branding InitiativeCHCA is Cincinnati’s best kept secret—that’s what Crane, an outside agency told us after conducting over 200 interviews. On one hand, we took it as a compliment, but it also represents a significant opportunity to build our reputation with families seeking a Christ-centered, rigorous, college-prep education who have not yet discovered CHCA.

During the strategic planning process, we identified building our reputation as a strategic priority for a relatively young school like CHCA in an established school market. Combined with an increasingly competitive local school landscape, some softness in our pool of prospective families and a general sense that we’re not maximizing our communication of the unique value of a CHCA education, in the fall of 2012, the Board of Trustees commissioned a comprehensive branding initiative. This project was funded not by tuition, but by an investment from our strategic reserves. As a school, we are blessed to have reserves that allow for strategic investments with the understanding that the monies are paid back with incremental revenue over time.

The objective was to clearly articulate the unique CHCA experience in a fresh new way to 1) attract new best-fit families and 2) energize current families, faculty and staff, and alumni with a renewed understanding and appreciation of the value of a CHCA education. A similar branding effort, the “CHCA Soaring” branding campaign, had been remarkably successful in bringing in new families about five years ago but it ran its course and it was time for an update.

Crane Metamarketing was selected as our partner for this effort based upon their proven capability to distill and communicate what truly sets a school apart, and our confidence that they could do this in the context of a distinctively Christian, academically rigorous school. Our charge to them was to embody our mission and motto of “unleashing a lifelong passion to learn, lead and serve” in a compelling new way. Starting this school year, the outcome of this work is alive all over campus and beyond: in the enthusiastic support of our constituents, on our refreshed website, in our new marketing materials deployed throughout the city, and in the fresh new way we talk about our students leaning into life as they strengthen their minds and their faith.

Crane’s research uncovered two key findings:An awareness opportunity:

many CHCA families initially came to CHCA with limited awareness or misunderstanding about who we are as a school.

An underselling insight: the actual experience of enrolled families dramatically exceeded their incoming expectations as they observed their child’s intellectual and spiritual growth over time at CHCA.

Leveraging these learnings was a key consideration in our message development and confirmation that this effort could deliver enrollment growth from families who more fully understand and believe in our unique, Christ-centered mission.

Natalie Pfister, CHCA Director of Enrollment and Vivienne Bechtold, Board Member

Why the Beacon? The Crane team asked, “What is your highest hope for this school?”

“That we would really continue to be, frankly, that beacon…. That it would be very clear that God is about this place.” – Parent of alum

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

Achieving Optimal EnrollmentLocally, growth in school age population in the top zip codes from which our students come has slowed as housing starts have slowed in response to a weak economy and limited remaining land slated for development. Our two largest feeder school districts (Mason and Lakota) have published demographic studies as part of their long-range planning process. Mason is closely monitoring local housing

starts and is projecting enrollment scenarios ranging from a modest enrollment decline to an increase of 500 students district-wide. Lakota’s study indicates a modest enrollment decline each year, for a loss of nearly 1,700 students over the next 10 years. Given these trends, it’s clear that we can no longer count on local population growth to fuel our enrollment, and therefore differentiating CHCA as a “blue ocean opportunity” for students in these districts becomes critical. *Sources: US Census data via NAIS demographic center, www.nais.org and www.zipcodes.com

National birth rates, steadily declining since 2007, appear to have stabilized just under 4,000,000 births/year, resulting in a smaller population of school age children for the foreseeable future. *Source: www.cdc.gov

Achieving optimal enrollment with best-fit students is an important strategic priority, with both missional and financial impact. In each building, we have room for additional students, students who would thrive intellectually and spiritually by being a part of the CHCA community. Our new upcoming SHARE CHCA initiative is designed to provide tools for us to TELL others our own stories and INVITE them to experience CHCA. Vigorously pursuing optimal enrollment expands CHCA’s kingdom impact and could deliver over $1.5 million in new revenue without compromising the board-approved class sizes for each grade. Enrollment fluctuations by grade mean that some grades have more opportunity than others, but the entire community thrives when optimal enrollment is achieved.

Ambitious Goals with Much Success! The 2012-13 school year can be defined as the year generosity surpassed all expectations at CHCA. The Board of Trustees approved increasing the annual fund goal from $450,000.00 to $525,000.00 and with God’s help and guidance it was achieved.

A new tradition also began this year in that the bi-annual Celebration Auction will now be hosted annually. Our first year Celebration target was $150,000.00 and through the generosity of the faculty, family, and friends of CHCA, that goal was also exceeded. Below is a snapshot of the exciting things that occurred in the area of Advancement this past year at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.

Parents, Grandparents, Alumni, Staff, and Friends each made gifts to the annual fund to help exceed our goal...outstanding success, community and support for our school.

CHCA Annual Fund 2012-2013 exceeds goal...Raising $529,788What an outstanding finish to the year! Many new key developments occurred this year:

The Soaring Eagle Circle of Giving EventThe school year came to a close with one last gathering...a celebration of philanthropy hosted by The Soaring Eagle Circle of Giving, honoring those who lead through giving. Several donors who have given sacrificially and faithfully to advance our school were recognized on June 5 at the home of Gina and Perry Drosos. Anna Love, a 2013 graduate, played the violin for honored guests including, founding families, current parents, grandparents, faculty and administration. After an opening prayer by Board of Trustees President Brian Gardner, Head of School Randy Brunk shared strategic school vision and initiatives. The school’s new Promise Statement was shared, launching the branding refresh. Special thanks to our Event Committee Members: Terry and Evan Andrews, Pamela and Mark Bailey, Nancy and Randy Brunk, Mike Chappelle, Sue and Dave Collins, Becki and Alan Droege, Gina and Perry Drosos, Sally and Cartwright Hall, Corliss and Chris Hayes, Karen and Ric Hordinski, Stel and Chris Kirbabas, Carlene and Brendan Murray, Anne and Ted Phelps, Dana and Gregg Schuler.
