One theme prevalent in many of the books shortlisted for the 2014 CILIP Carnegie Medal is survival, so why not play the game to see which book does the best to survive? As in the TV show ‘Survivor’, a team, the shadowers must read the books and complete challenges. Over 7 sessions, the shadowers face-off in challenges for immunity (the power to protect one book from elimination). Each time they meet, the team completes an activity and is called to ‘Tribal Council’ where they discuss the books. Finally, the group leader asks a prompting question linked to the judging criteria, and students must then vote out one of the books, eliminating it from the competition for survival. Challenge: Who will be able to finish all of the shadowing books first? Activity: “Who said that?” The students pick their favourite quote from any book they have read and write it on a piece of paper. The group leader takes in all the pieces of paper and mixes them up in a hat. They draw the quotes one by one and have the students guess what book each quote came from. The student with the most correct guesses wins. Group leader Discussion Question: Which characters’ narration is the least interesting? Why? If you had to vote off a book based on this, which would go? Session 3 Challenge: How many books can you read by the next session? Activity: Speed-dating with books. Shadowers are given two minutes with each book before they have to pass it on. Give the shadowers a sheet to rate the books based on those two minutes and decide which book he or she would like to commit to first. The students then begin reading the book they selected. Session 1 Challenge: Who will win review of the week? Activity: Literary snowballs. Split students into two teams and choose a book they have all read (or perhaps read the first chapter of one of the books). Give each team member a piece of paper. Ensure each team writes with a different colour pen, e.g. blue pens for team 1 and green for team 2. Then, have them all write a question (they can all be different) about the book. When they finish, have them crumple up the paper and play the music. While the music plays, the game is on. They must answer the question before they can throw the paper back. If it was answered incorrectly, the team who wrote it may throw it again. If it was answered correctly, they must write a new question. The goal is to be the team with the least number of snowballs on their side of the room when the music stops.

Activity:

“Who said that?” The students pick their favourite quote from any book they have read and write it on a piece of paper. The group leader takes in all the pieces of paper and mixes them up in a hat. They draw the quotes one by one and have the students guess what book each quote came from. The student with the most correct guesses wins.

Group leader Discussion Question:

Which characters’ narration is the least interesting? Why? If you had to vote off a book based on this, which would go?

Challenge: Who will win review of the week?

Activity:

Literary snowballs. Challenge: Who can write the best blog post?

Activity:

Sharing secrets about books. Give each shadower a post it note. Ask them to write down one thing they have thought about the book, that they haven’t wanted to share with the group. It may be a question they were embarrassed to ask something they have been thinking about quietly, or simply a moment when the book really excited them or bored them. Then have the students hide these post it notes in a Carnegie Shadowing book. When the shadowers have read the other books, they can respond to the post-it notes and add other secrets. Be sure you put a few extra post it notes in the front of the book.

Group leader Discussion Question:

In which book did you find the pace to be too slow or too fast? Why?

Challenge: Best photo idea for the shadowing page. Take and upload your group photo.

Activity:

For this activity, you will need three different coloured post it notes. Put students in pairs and give them each a book and the three different coloured post-its. Have them write down the main character, a key place and an event from the book. (Eg: Linus, kidnapping, a bunker). Then mix them up and hand them back out. They should now have a mix of characters, places and events. They need to come up with their own story to tell the group that connects the three things. Be sure you give the shadowers strict time limits (10 minutes to create a 1 minute story).

Group leader Discussion Question:

In which book is the author’s use of language in conveying setting and atmosphere not as well constructed?
