Noise pollution is proving

to be an increasing problem

in today’s society and is

recognised as a major

environmental problem

affecting millions of people

around the world. And in

today’s environmentally

sensitive times, using the

most energy efficient methods

available to maintain a

controlled temperature is

equally paramount.

Mann McGowan has enhanced

its highly successful Enviroseal®

range to include Acoustic

Sealing Solutions, offering

complete acoustic, smoke, dust

and ambient weather seals.

Importantly, these seals can be

used in conjunction with Mann

McGowan’s intumescent seals to

provide complete protection.

Acoustic seals help isolate rooms

from airborne noise generated

within a building, such as plant

and machinery, recording studios,

cinemas and interconnected hotel

rooms. They also help isolate

buildings from external traffic

noise from roads, railways and

airports.

Installing seals in the gaps around

a door is the primary method of

reducing sound passing into or

out of a room or building.

Mann McGowan’s Enviroseal®

Acoustic Sealing Solutions include

a highly engineered Acoustic

Threshold Seal as well as a range

of uncomplicated retrofit seals for

door heads and jambs. Together,

they offer an excellent barrier

to airborne sound making the

acoustic attenuation provided by

a door and its frame equivalent to

the wall into which it is installed.

Effective sealing also offers

protection against smoke and

fire, insects and the elements.

Used in combination, Enviroseal®

seals cut heat loss and eliminate

cold draughts - measurably

reducing energy usage – and

prevent the ingress of smoke,

airborne dust and insects.

Now, the Mann McGowan

Enviroseal® range enables

you to meet ever-changing

Building Regulations, the current

requirements of Approved

Document E and Building Bulletin

93, and take into consideration

the Noise Act 1996.

Any queries? Our technical team

is ready to answer your questions,

making sure you get the right

solution for your application.

DDI Acoustic Threshold Seal

Spring loaded, the DD1 Acoustic Threshold Seal lifts as soon as

the door is opened, rising clear of carpets and other obstacles,

and lowers to seal when the door closes. Mounted into a 28mm

x 18mm rebate cut into the door’s bottom rail, it operates

automatically by pressure against the doorjamb on its adjustable

strike block. Self-levelling, the DD1 Acoustic Threshold Seal is an

effective component in an acoustic sealing system.

tests its Enviroseal® range to

The Enviroseal® Acoustic Seals

range has been tested by

UKAS-accredited (No: 0444)

Sound Research Laboratory

in accordance with BS EN ISO

140-3:1995 - and beyond.

The results were presented in

Report C/05/5L/3372/1A.

Test set-up

Airborne sound transmission is

determined from the difference in

sound pressure measured across

a test sample installed between

two reverberant rooms. To ensure

good acoustic isolation, resilient

mountings and seals are used to

isolate the 50m3 receiving room

from the surrounding structure.

The adjoining - source - room has

a volume of 55m3.

An electronic generator, power

amplifier and loudspeaker are

used in the source room to

produce broad band noise. The

resulting sound pressure levels are

sampled in both rooms using a

microphone connected to a real-

time analyser. The sound pressure

level difference [D] across the test

sample is calculated from:

D = LS - LR

where LS is the equivalent sound

pressure difference in the source

room, LR in the receiving room.

The Sound Reduction Index [R]

(USA - Sound Transmission Loss)

is the decibel reduction in sound

energy randomly incident on the

test sample:

where S is the area of the sample

and A the total absorption in the

receiving room.

The Sound Reduction Index is

an expression of a particular

test subject, its mass, thickness,

sealing method, etc., under

laboratory conditions; the actual

sound reduction index achieved

in a particular installation will be

different.

Acoustic performance test

BS EN ISO 140-3 specifies acoustic testing between frequencies

100Hz and 3,150Hz, US ASTM between 125Hz to 4,000Hz. But

the top note of a piano is 4,186Hz and the frequency content of

speech lies between 125 and 8,000Hz. It is for such reasons that

Mann McGowan Enviroseals® are tested to 10,000Hz, well beyond

the range specified in standards.

Making the sound choice

We have provided the table below to help you select the right seals combination for your

application. Information is presented as combinations of Enviroseal® seals that provide

a good balance between acoustic performance and other functions, including the DD1

Acoustic Threshold Seal which is essential to maximising performance and meeting the

requirements of Approved Document E.

For maximum performance, Mann McGowan’s recommendation has been highlighted in red.

All Enviroseal® acoustic seals are designed for commercial use, including heavy-duty.
