BACK TO SCHOOL
VISION STATEMENT:
Bethlehem . . . A beacon
Upon the hill who
Ministers to all God's children through
Christ . . . who first served us
MISSION STATEMENT: We are here to ignite the light of Christ in all people, by reaching out to others, by growing as followers of Christ, and by going forth in ministry and service, so that all may know God’s love in Jesus Christ.
We had a great time at our weekend retreat to begin work on the vision and mission of Bethlehem UMC. Shown below is a “relational covenant” that shows how we should try to relate to each other as we move into the future God has planned for us. No one is perfect (but Jesus) but we can do our best! “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3)
~Pastor Barry
Relational Covenant for Bethlehem UMC August 17, 2013
Each member of the Body of Christ is a valued and important part of the mission and ministries of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. To honor and protect the integrity of our mission and relationships, we commit to relate to one another in the following manner:
To speak the truth in love, with compassion, integrity, respect
and honesty
To relate to each other in Christian fellowship practicing the gifts
of grace, mercy, and trust
To listen with open hearts and open minds, listening attentively,
without interrupting or cross talking
To practice the model of dealing one-on-one as Jesus taught us
(Matthew 18:15-20) when we have issues with one another and to
avoid gossiping and going behind others’ backs
To practice forgiveness and reconciliation
To agree to disagree with love and respect
To be accountable for our own behavior practicing kindness,
good manners, and support for our brothers and sisters in Christ
To approach all discussions with a positive attitude, leaving nega-
tive emotions and attitudes at the door
To relate to each other positively with enthusiasm
To approach all issues calmly, humbly, and with a positive, smiling
demeanor
To demonstrate patience and understanding
To keep all issues centered on what God is calling our church to
do and to be
To practice actively this relational covenant at all times, within
the sacred space of our church, in our community, homes, work-
places, and hearts

PRAYER CONCERNS
CELL PHONE DONATIONS… Do you have old, unused cell phones lying around the house? Put them to good use by do-nating them to Davie Domestic Violence Services and Rape Crisis Center. Donated phones are either refurbished for reimburse-ment for client services or reactivated for client use. Safety is a key issue for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault; a cell phone activated with 911 telephone service can be extremely nec-essary and even life-saving. Please place your old cell phones (with charger if you have it) in the designated box in the Missions Room. For questions, please contact Virginia Burnette (409-8721).
A STOREHOUSE FOR JESUS... September requests are sugar, self-rising flour, cornmeal, salt, vegetable oil, shortening, laundry detergent, canned fruits and paper & plastic bags. Please place items in the baskets in the adult Sunday school classrooms or in the Missions Room at the back of the Sanctuary. Volunteers will be working at Storehouse Tuesday, September 17 at 6 pm to stock shelves. Please join us!
MISSIONS
SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR DAVIE COUNTY STU-
DENTS IN NEED… It’s time to start gathering school sup-plies to donate to local students in need. These children are iden-tified through Davie County Social Services and “A Storehouse for Jesus.” The requested items are: pencils, pens, highlighters, block erasers, crayons (24 pack), colored pencils, glue sticks, pocket folders, divider sheets, notebook paper (wide & college ruled), 3-ring binders (1”, 1 ½” and 2”), zippered pouches for pencils and pens, backpacks (no rollers), calculators (TI30-XIIS, TI83 or TI84). Items will be collected here at Bethlehem UMC through the end of September and taken to Storehouse for distribution. Please place donated items in the designated box in the Missions Room. For questions or more information, contact Virginia Burnette (409-8721).

MISSIONS MOMENT CONTINUED
"recognize" as homeless. But many times, they ask you to say a prayer for them or pray with them. Or they're the ones who really clasp your hand when you shake it and give them a God bless as they leave. What I want you to know is that these people are just you and me with dif-ferent, sad stories. The stories could be about alcohol, drugs, violence, just really lousy luck or bad choices. Some of them share, some don't. But, unlike you and me, they have no one in their lives willing to offer shelter. Can you imagine? Now, this church has a wonderful heart for missions. But maybe you don't want to go to Haiti or Africa. Maybe you can't find the time to go to South Dakota or Oklahoma. Maybe you don't particularly want to even cross the Yadkin River. The good news for you? Bethesda is only about 20 minutes away. You'll serve a little food, you'll share a little of God's word and you will be more than a little blessed. Even if you can't go, you can still help by donating food, money or by help-ing prepare the meals. Many of you have already helped with this effort, and it has been much appreciated. If you feel moved to help, or go with us, there is always something to do, buy, or make. And there is always room on the bus for one more compassionate and friendly face. I considered finishing this up with some fiery verses about greed and self-ishness and eternal damnation. But then I remembered I'm not Baptist anymore, so I'll leave you with 2 thoughts; First, the words over the dou-ble doors into the sanctuary say, "Come and Worship." Soon, there will also be words over the front door as you leave. Those words will be, "Depart and Serve." And finally, Isaiah 58:10. If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. ~Robin Howard Christin Howard 978-9326 Justin Riddle 462-6866 Robin Howard 575-4207
MISSIONS MOMENT
"Thank you so much for coming!" "Your church is a blessing to us." "We love it when you all come." "That was some righteous food." "God bless all of you." Just a very few of the comments heard from the folks we feed and fellow-ship with at Bethesda. It's a homeless shelter. Some of us, from our church and others, go two to three times a month. The basics of our visits are these; We sign up for a particular evening. We make many calls and texts, arranging a meal, after which whoever is going meets at 7 here at Bethlehem. We load up food, drinks and supplies; some-times in the bus, sometimes in our cars. We get there, set up on tables pro-vided, serve the women, then the men, anywhere from 50, 60, maybe 70 people. After they eat, someone in our group gives a short message, we clean up and come home. Simply put, we feed the homeless. But its so much more than that. These are not anonymous, faceless people. We are feeding individuals. Fellow human beings who, for whatever rea-sons, have ended up with no home and no family or friends to offer them one. We're feeding an older man who thanked us profusely when he came in late and all we had to offer him was a little slaw and, not cornbread pieces even, but cornbread crumbs. We're feeding a young man a little older than my son, Chase, who was in jail. On the day this boy was released his mother picked him up. She didn't take him home with her, she drove him to the shelter. We're feeding an middle aged woman who said she loves when our group comes because we always make her feel like she "is somebody". We're feeding mothers who are there while their young kids are who knows where. We're feeding a beautiful, well dressed, well spoken woman who certainly doesn't "look" homeless. But we also feed people that do look the part. They're stereotypes. They won't look you in the eye as they go through the line. They mutter and mumble. They stink. They have dirty hands and they wrap food up in nap-kins and shove it in pockets of nasty coats. They're the ones you

Book Bags of Hope This school year Bethlehem is partnering with Smith Grove
UMC on the Book Bags of Hope project for Pinebrook Elementary. This project donates a bag of food every Friday to a child for the weekend. These children would normally have very little, or no food to eat on the weekend. There are about 94 bags given out each Friday. All foods are individually wrapped, single servings, and require minimal cooking.
Please help us by donating food to this worthy cause. Some food items are alternated throughout the year, but the items on this list are collected all year long. Purchase items on the list below, and donate items in the boxes provided around the church (Missions Room, FLC and CAC).

Our special guest entertainment will be the Damascus Road Quartet from Oak Forest UMC in Davidson County. All Bethlehem members who are 65 years and older and their spouses are invited to join us.
BETHLEHEM GREETERS: For a long time Kathy Rivers has greeted folks as they entered Bethlehem for our 8:45 Service and Sonny Hanes, Larry Riddle, William Clontz have greeted everyone as they entered at 11:00. Bethlehem is now trying to be even more intentional about greeting members and guests on Sunday morn-ings. We have an additional rotating group of volunteers who may greet you before the 8:45 or 11:00 services. Our new greeters may be standing on the sidewalk, in the parking lot, or at a classroom building door. Many thanks to all our greeters.
COMPASSIONATE OUTREACH GUIDELINES 2013 Following are the revised compassionate outreach guidelines for the com-mittees. These guidelines show support for both the active members, shut-ins and regular attendees of BUMC in time of need.
The coordinator will be notified by the pastor or administrative assis-tant in times of funerals, births or extended hospital stay (minimum of 3 days, except for births). The coordinator will then contact the next committee head on the rotating list to contact the family to determine the need. In the case of hospital stays or births, the com-mittee head will contact the family concerning an appropriate time to bring a meal to the family home.
In case of death of an active member, spouse or dependent child or regular attendees, the meal would usually be prepared in connection with the funeral at Bethlehem of the deceased.
Meals for funerals will be provided for close family members only (usually 25-30 people). We discourage outside groups or persons attending the meal during this time of grief. If the family requests a large number of people to attend, or unusual circumstances (such as a large reception or large groups) the committee head will advise them that the committee will not be able to meet their needs and suggest they make other arrangements per our guidelines. Please keep in mind our preschool program operates from 8:30 to 12:30 Monday through Thursday.
If the family will receive friends after the funeral, it is requested they receive in the sanctuary or Christian activity center to alleviate any confusion while the meal is being prepared. In that case, we could do the meal before the funeral as to not make a hardship on those preparing, serving and cleaning.
Each committee called for a funeral will be requested to prepare food for 8-10 people. The request for food will be determined on an individual basis. Some of the serving suggestions are refreshments only (cookies, coffee and tea), sandwiches with chips and beverage or full meal. This will be determined by the coordinator and commit-tee head taking into consideration any family request, time of day, other activities at the church and time constraints.
Please feel free to call any of the coordinators with questions or if there is a problem. List of co-coordinators: January- March: Judy McDowell, Peggy Isenhour April-June: Jean Harpe, Sandra Sofley July-September: Ivey Jo Smith, Pat Sprouse, Donna Powell October-December: Marcia Sexton, Karen Myers

Young Adults, single or married are invited to attend our new Adult Sunday School Class.
Lisa Phelps will be leading the study of John Ortberg’s book “If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat”. You will discover what ways the Lord is tell-ing you to be called into a relationship with Him.
