Liturgy Meeting Thursday, January 17, 2016, 7:00p.m.

Parish Hall—All are welcome.

MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the Bap-tism of the Lord. This feast is a sister to last week’s feast of the Epiphany. Each of them celebrates an “epiphany,” or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus—first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spirit of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke’s account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. And the letter to Titus reminds us that the Holy Spirit was “richly poured out” on us also, through the “bath of rebirth” (Titus 3:5, 6). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#115 A people of many faces The People of God is incarnate in the peoples of the earth, each of which has its own culture. The concept of culture is valuable for grasping the various expressions of the Christian life present in God’s people. It has to do with the lifestyle of a given society, the specific way in which its members relate to one another, to other creatures and to God. Understood in this way, culture embraces the to-tality of a people’s life. Each people in the course of its history develops its culture with legitimate autonomy. This is due to the fact that the human person, “by nature stands completely in need of life in society” and always exists in reference to society, finding there a concrete way of relating to reality. The human person is always situated in a culture: “nature and culture are intimately linked”. Grace supposes culture, and God’s gift becomes flesh in the culture of those who receive it.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks—When Christ, the Son of God, became flesh and the person Jesus in the womb of Mary, then we all became brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ. Now we the Church, the children of God, are incarnate in the world; we are living among all nations; we are part of all the peoples of the earth; we share Jesus with them; we live Jesus with them. When they relate to us as they do intimately by being human they are meeting Jesus in us. This relationship affects and is part of all the aspects of ours and their lives. This effects our various cultures, just as we come to see Jesus in the person, so too we need to see the power and wonder of God in the many cultures. God, Jesus is in all our cultures.
