Pancake Breakfast There will be no Pancake Breakfast in the months of July and August. We will resume in September.

O LORD, BE MY HELP Today we encounter readings that draw us into the mys-tery of suffering and death. In the past few years we have witnessed the devastation of life and property through earthquakes and hurricanes. So many lifted their lament to God, simply asking, “Why?” This is an honest expression of anger toward a God who we believe is the giver of life. When we lose a loved one, we can wonder why the pres-ence of Christ is not enough to make that person rise, even from death, as did the little girl in today’s Gospel passage. Again we raise our voices and ask, “Why?” At moments such as these, let us make the prayer of the psalmist our own: “Hear, O L , and have pity on me; O L , be my helper.” Let us pray that our mourning will one day be turned into dancing. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the “Military Vicariate.” In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the “Archdiocese for Military Ser-vices, USA.” Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a “schoolmaster,” but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the “Nuns of the Battlefield” (several orders of sis-ters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. —Rev. FESCO Merger With La Familia The Family Emergency Shelter Coalition, (FESCO), has wonderful news to share with our Coalition members and supporters.

Effective July 1, FESCO will be merging with La Familia Counseling Services, a larger multi-service agency found-ed in Hayward in 1975. FESCO will remain committed to providing housing and critical services for homeless Alameda County families and their children. By merging with La Familia, FESCO will have a greater ability to provide our families with a more diverse array of social services, encompassing pro-grams for mental health, substance abuse, and/or educa-tion and employment opportunities. FESCO has much to gain from this merger, as does La Familia, which currently is not able to provide housing options for their clients. Our passionate commitment to serving homeless families and their children will continue as FESCO becomes a part of La Familia. The FESCO Coalition Board will continue as an Advisory Committee working in collaboration with La Familia’s executive staff. Most importantly, our mer-ger with La Familia will enhance FESCO without any negative impact on our current clients, continuity of care, nature of services, or intended use of any real property owned by FESCO. On behalf of hundreds of FESCO families over the past 30 years, we wish to acknowledge our community for your dedication, volunteerism, and financial contributions in support of our mission. If you have any questions regarding this merger, please contact Bob Peppler in the evening at 510-538-3108 or via email at: [email protected].

Sixty Plus or Minus Club Please join us for our continental breakfast and meeting in the Hall following the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Friday, July 6th. Our hosts will be June Rigley, Kay McCann, Carol Moss, Elena Jimenez, and Elsie Boyd. Bingo will be played after the meeting. Non-members are always welcome. Please sign up today if you plan to attend.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#243

Dialogue between faith, reason and science.

The Church has no wish to hold back the marvellous pro-gress of science. On the contrary, she rejoices and even delights in acknowledging the enormous potential that God has given to the human mind. Whenever the sciences – rigorously focused on their specific field of inquiry – arrive at a conclusion which reason cannot refute, faith does not contradict it. Neither can believers claim that a scientific opinion which is attractive but not sufficiently verified has the same weight as a dogma of faith. At times some scientists have exceeded the limits of their scientific competence by making certain statements or claims. But here the problem is not with reason itself, but with the promotion of a particular ideology which blocks the path to authentic, serene and productive dialogue.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks—Pope Francis makes a state-ment today that we all need to know and remember:

'' THE CHURCH HAS NO WISH TO HOLD BACK THE MARVELOUS

PROGRESS OF SCIENCE''. The truth is that every step we make in knowing the world better, the more we can marvel at God's crea-tion. Faith and science, like faith and knowledge, are sides of the same coin. Our problem, as we stated last week, is that many of us only know and look at one side of the coin and are unfamiliar with the de-tails of the flip side. Good dialogue happens when both sides go to the trouble of understanding how the other thinks according to their own expertise. I can be an expert in the realm of faith thinking but a dumbbell when it comes to logic or science. When we enter a dialogue, let us always try to give the other credit in his field and be humble enough to acknowledge we are learners in hers. Then there is hope on all sides.
