FAITH FORMATION
EASTER SUNDAY THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD
Today we begin the Easter Season, our fifty-day meditation on the mystery of Christ's Resurrection. The Gospel tells us about the disciples' discovery of the empty tomb. It concludes by telling us that they did not yet understand that Jesus had risen from the dead. The details provided are not meant to offer proof of the Resurrection. They invite us to reflect upon a most amazing gift - faith in Jesus and his Resurrection.
Each of the four Gospels tells us that Jesus' empty tomb was first discovered by women. This is notable because in first-century Jewish society women could not serve as legal witnesses. In the case of John's Gospel, the only woman attending the tomb is Mary of Magdala. Unlike the Synoptic accounts, John's Gospel does not describe an appearance of angels at the tomb. Instead, Mary is simply said to have observed that the stone that had sealed the tomb had been moved, and she runs to alert Simon Peter and the beloved disciple. Her statement to them is telling. She assumes that Jesus' body has been removed, perhaps stolen. She does not consider that Jesus has been raised from the dead. Simon Peter and the beloved disciple race to the tomb. The beloved disciple arrives first but does not enter the tomb until after Simon Peter. This detail paints a vivid picture, as does the detail provided about the burial cloths. Some scholars believe that the presence of the burial cloths in the tomb offers evidence to the listener that Jesus' body had not been stolen.
The Gospel passage concludes, however, that even having seen the empty tomb and the burial cloths, the disciples do not yet understand about the Resurrection. In the passage that follows, Mary of Magdala meets Jesus but mistakes him for the gardener. In the weeks ahead, the Gospel readings from our liturgy will show us how the disciples came to believe in Jesus' Resurrection through his appearances to them. Our Easter faith is based on their witness to both the empty tomb and their continuing relationship with Jesus—in his appearances and in his gift of the Holy Spirit.

FEAST OF DIVINE MERCY Sunday, April 23
JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU!
Please join us for Holy Hour and Benediction at 3pm on Sunday for the conclusion of the
Divine Mercy Novena!
In the year 2000 Pope St. John Paul II proclaimed that from that year forward the Second Sunday of Easter would be celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday. This was proclaimed at the Canonization Mass of St. Faustina Kawalska, who worked throughout her life to make all aware of the merciful love of God. St. Faustina (1905–1938) was born and raised in Poland. Following a vocation to religious life, she was accepted by the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. As a member of the Congregation, she worked as a cook, gardener, and porter. In her spiritual life, her contemplation on the Mercy of God led her to develop a childlike trust in God and deep love for her neighbor.
In her years in the convent, St. Faustina heard a call from God to make God’s Mercy known to the world so that the world may more fully receive God’s healing grace. St. Faustina kept a 600-page diary of the apparitions she claimed continued for years. Her entries focus on God’s mercy, the call to accept God’s mercy and to be merciful, the need for conversion, and the call to trust in Jesus. It had been Jesus’ own wish, she wrote, to establish a feast day: “I [Jesus] desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls . . . . I am giving them the last hope of salvation; that is, the Feast of My Mercy.” St. Faustina promoted the Chaplet of Divine Mercy which consists of the recitation of prayers to the Eternal Father and the rosary for the sake of Christ’s sorrowful passion.
When celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday, the faithful are called to reflect more personally on the graces won through the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus. In this way, your hearts may be more fully aware of the mercy of God for you personally and for the sake of the world.

On Saturday, April 1, over 50 women came together in prayer, reflection and friendship for the Women’s Morning of Reflection at Immaculate Heart of Mary. With her thoughts, insights and touching stories, Sister Maria Regina, from the Sisters of Life in Suffern, NY, presented a beautiful mediation on standing by the Cross of Christ with Our Lady. We extend a heartfelt

EASTER TRADITIONS
Since ancient times rabbits have been associated with spring. It is believed that the Anglo-Saxon Goddess of Spring, Eostre, had a hare as her companion. The hare symbolizes fertility and rebirth. Later Christians changed the symbol to the Easter bunny.
Kids in the U.S. grow up expecting a delivery of eggs and candy from the Easter bunny each year, but it may seem odd to an outsider. Brought to this country by German immigrants in the 1700s, the practice is rooted
in the belief that rabbits and eggs symbolize fertility and rebirth. From a Christian perspective, Easter eggs are said to represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb and resurrection. Decorating eggs for Easter is a tradition that dates back to the 13th century according to some sources. One explanation for this custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during the Lenten season so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting and eaten on Easter in celebration.
The tradition of decorating eggs was present on Polish lands thoughout the centuries. The motifs painted on Pisanki have a deep symbolic meaning, connected to rebirth, fertility, beauty, protection, and sun
symbolism (vitality). Pisanki are added to Easter baskets (święconki) and blessed on Holy Saturday in Church. Pouring water on one another is a Polish Easter tradition called Smingus-Dyngus. On Easter Monday, boys try to drench other people with buckets of water, squirt guns or anything they can get their hands on. Legend says girls who get soaked will marry within the year. The refreshing tradition has its origins in the baptism of Polish Prince Mieszko on Easter Monday in 966 AD.

CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL
COLLECTION NEXT WEEK-END
Home mission dioceses are dioceses in the US and its territories that cannot provide basic pastoral services to Catholics without outside help. Basic pastoral services include Mass, Sacraments, Religious Education, and ministry training for priests, deacons, religious and lay people. Currently 40 percent of dioceses in the US are considered home missions. With your support, these dioceses ensure priests can make the necessary travel to serve them and parishes can keep their doors open. Support from this appeal has allowed them to keep their faith communities active and connected to the universal Church.
STEWARDSHIP Due to early bulletin deadlines, Palm Sunday and Easter collections will be reported when available.
