On November 13th we will have a visit from Bishop Mark Hollingsworth. He will preside at the 10:30am Eucharist (no 8 am service that day) and meet members of the vestry. The bishop visits each parish in the diocese as our chief priest and pastor. He visits with us to find out firsthand about the state of our parish.

During the worship service the bishop baptizes people into the Body of Christ, the Church. He also lays his hands and prays over those presenting themselves for confirmation, reception, and reaffirmation.

The bishop is a visible sign of the catholicity or universality of the Church as the Body of Christ. Therefore, when the bishop is visiting a parish, it is appropriate to celebrate sacraments and rituals that emphasize our interconnectedness as members of the one Body of Christ. This is the opportune time to be baptized and/or confirmed. It is also a time for those confirmed by a bishop in another tradition to be received into the fellowship of this Communion or for adults who have been confirmed in the Episcopal Church to recommit themselves to Christ as participants in God’s mission in the world.

It is very important for our growth spiritually as a parish and for acknowledgment of that growth that all adults have been officially recognized as adult members of the Episcopal Church. If you are interested in learning more about these things or presenting for baptism, confirmation, reception, or reaffirmation please call or email me at 216-577-4623 or [email protected] immediately so we can have a conversation and/or make necessary preparations.

We will have a Safeguarding God's Children Training on Sunday November 20th at noon. This training is for all members of the church to ensure the safety of our children. Vestry members, volunteers, and those who minister with our children must attend this training unless you have already done so in the last three years. If you are unable to attend please email Father Vincent at [email protected]

The training will last until 2:30 pm and lunch will be served. The safety of our children is every parishioners responsibility. There will be a sign up sheet in the office for those who plan to attend. Thank You.

From Rev. Vincent Black

SAFEGUARDING GOD'S CHILDREN TRAINING

If you have not been baptized or confirmed in the Episcopal Church and are not planning to at this time, please email or call me so that I am more aware of your spiritual journey. As you priest it is very important that I know your spiritual story so that I am best equipped to pastor you as you continue to grow in your faith.

This will be the first time Bishop Hollingsworth will visit since I have been your priest. It is really essential that we have a full house and make sure we express to him our gratitude for all the support that Ascension is receiving from the diocese and from him. As many of you know I am officially serving at Ascension half time and on the bishop’s staff half time. However, this year the parish is contributing just under $10,000.00 of its own resources towards my salary. The remainder of the half of my salary for which Ascension is responsible is being supplemented by the diocese. By 2018 Ascension will need to be paying fully for half of my salary. We are moving in that direction in large part because the diocese has been so generous with this parish. It is very important that the bishop know how truly grateful we are to him and to the diocese for giving Ascension the opportunity to move toward sustainability.

United Thank Offering

Through the United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving thanks to God for all kinds of blessings received. UTO is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the resulting funds to support mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church in the world. Grants are awarded annually from all of the money collected through the Spring and Fall Ingatherings. Every penny given is granted.

The Fall Ingathering of our thanks will happen on November 6.

And here goes another penny into the little blue box at my house. Perhaps another, since I’m well under the wire for the monthly Spires deadline!

Carol Culp, UTO parish custodian.
