From the desk of Father Sullivan Dear Friends, This past week, a great deal has happened at our parish. There is an old expression, “many hands make light work”, and many hands were certainly at work both here at the church and beyond. This week’s letter is one of thankfulness to all those who have given of their time, talent and treasure to make a difference. The four photos below depict different areas of service that have all taken place in the very recent past: 1. One thousand Brian Bags for the Brian O'Connell Homeless Project were assembled by over 50 parishioners and friends. 900 were distributed after all masses this past weekend and 100 are being given to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, where the homeless regularly knock on the rectory door. Thus far, 3,500 bags have been made and the project is gaining in recognition well beyond the valley, thanks primarily to the efforts of parishioners, Donna and Walter Finneran. 2. The Community Garden located in the rear of the church was planted this past week by our 6th graders. The vegetables will be used for the St. Francis Food Pantry. 3. We have provided a roof for a person very much in need. The entire roof was completed at no cost. ABC Supply donated a pallet of roofing. After working on the roof for two weekends by a number of men from the parish, we realized with significant rain in the forecast, that it was going to take longer than we had planned. Valley Roofing was completing a roof for one of our parishioners and after learning of our struggles, kindly sent four of their workers to finish the job free of charge. The homeowner sent the following

brief note: “I am so appreciative to Fr. Sullivan and the men from Assumption parish for replacing my roof. My roof was in desperate need to

be replaced. I was unable to afford such a project as I recently experienced two layoffs in 4 years. Thank you and God Bless!” 4. The fourth photo is by one of our parishioners, Kevin Zak who is on an animal rescue team. He was notified the day after the terrible storm that a large tree containing three young owls fell in Oxford. The interior of the tree was so rotten that it provided a soft bed for the owls. When the huge tree blew over, the owls were not seriously hurt. A makeshift owl nest was raised into another tree and two days later the mother and owls were reunited. It could be said by some that the four events listed above have nothing to do with church. The Catholic, however would say that the love of God flows to our neighbor in the form of service. Our service flows also to the created world. It is important to remember that without prayer and without God at the center, these four same actions would simply be social work. Having God in the center of all we do changes everything. Our acts of charity become acts of prayer and worship. “Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Mt25:40b) Service without God is social work. Prayer without service is a dead faith. “For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. ” (Jm 2:26) At our parish, our hope and prayer is that both prayer and service rise together. They become one act of love to God. Thank you for all you do.

Happy Memorial Day, Fr. Sullivan
