THE ETERNAL GOD King David wished that the ark of God might have a more permanent home. David may have envisioned something like the cedar palace where he resided. God had in mind something more: a throne where David’s descendants would rule for ever, a kingdom where Jews and Gentiles alike would be welcome. Mary’s prayerful nature led to an even more disturbing message. She would conceive and bear a Son though she was not yet married. “How can this come about?” Mary wondered. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” she was told (Luke 1:35). Mary’s acceptance of this difficult challenge ushered in this, the final age of God’s reign. What was once a secret known only by chosen people like King David and his descendants must now be made clear to all so that, as Saint Paul wrote to the Romans, we can be brought to the “obedience of faith” “according to the command of the eternal God” (Romans 16:26). CHRISTMAS EVE … Thursday, December 24 … Masses at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium and 9:00 pm in the church. Both Masses will be bilingual … TICKETS ARE REQUIRED.

CHRISTMAS DAY ... Friday, December 25 ... Masses at 7:30 am, 9 am in Spanish, 10:30 am and 12 noon. RECTORY OFFICES … The rectory offices will be closed on Thursday, December 24 and Friday, December 25. JOY TO THE WORLD … The Priests and Staff of St. Raymond wish you all a very joyful Christmas, as we celebrate the arrival of Our Lord. May the Christmas Season fill you with faith, hope and love. MARY MOTHER OF GOD … On Friday, January 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation. A bilingual Mass will be offered at 5:30 pm, followed by Eucharistic Adoration on Thursday, December 31. On January 1, there will be a single Mass at 9 am and the rectory offices will be closed on that day as well. Come and start the new Secular Year with our Lord, Jesus Christ. MASS SCHEDULE ... To make sure we can maintain social distancing, the 9 AM, 10:30 AM and 12 Noon Mass on Sundays will be held in the Auditorium. Be sure to enter on Purdy Street. The Masses on Saturday at 5:30 pm and Sunday at 7:30 am will continue to be celebrated in the church. Some of the following events and groups have been delayed, or the meetings are suspended, due to pandemic precautions. Hopefully, we will begin to offer all these ministries soon. MASS INTENTIONS … you can remember a family member or friend with an intention at a specific Mass come to the rectory for a specific date … the offering is $15 and Mass cards are available with each Mass … the intentions can be for a living or deceased person … intentions are printed in the bulletin.

MASS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED ... The last Sunday of each month we have Mass at 12 noon with sign language ... pass on the word to relatives and friends who might be interested ... sign language is beautiful and inspiring to watch.

RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION … Just a reminder that we ask that you preferably receive Holy Communion in your hands, by holding out both hands one on top of the other. Also remember that the proper response to the priest before receiving Holy Communion is “Amen,” not “Thank you.” BAPTISMS … all Catholics should be baptized … parents should be registered in the parish and attending weekly Sunday Mass in order to have the child baptized … godparents must be practicing Catholics who have received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation and, if married, married in the church … godparents must be members of a parish and must be attending weekly Mass … if you are going to be a godparent, it makes perfect and reasonable sense that you are practicing the faith and that you are a model for the child. SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY ... the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is between a man and a woman, a sign of LOVE and LIFE ... Catholics should be married in the church and, if married only civilly, should speak to one of the priests about receiving the sacrament in the Church (called convalidation) ... please know that you are welcome to ask questions and to receive direction and advice about the SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY … Please remember to secure a date for your wedding before making any arrangements with caterers, limo drivers, family and friends. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS … the usual practice for Catholic burials is a wake service in a funeral home, a Funeral Mass in the parish church, burial of the body or cremains in a cemetery (preferably a Catholic cemetery) … speak with one of the priests for assistance before a death occurs and speak with a reputable funeral home director about pre-arrangements … cremains (ashes) are held in the same reverence and respect as a body and so they should be treated carefully, respectfully, reverentially and buried as soon as possible after cremation.

PARISH REGISTRATION … all members of the parish should be registered and receive parish mailings and envelopes … if you are an adult (18 years and older), you should register to receive the envelopes and other information from the parish … you need to be registered in order to receive recommendation letters, financial statements, tuition rates and other parish related issues … HOW TO REGISTER? Come to the rectory office on Castle Hill Ave.

LATE FOR CHURCH? … Why? Please resolve to arrive early for Mass, say a prayer, read the Scripture and be ready when we start it will make the Mass more prayerful and meaningful for all. Remember, if you miss the readings, you miss the teachings of Christ. St. Jerome wrote, “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” Getting to Church on time matters.

EL DIOS ETERNO El rey David deseaba que el Arca de Dios tuviera un hogar más permanente. David podría haberse imaginado algo así como el palacio de cedro donde residía. Dios tenía en mente algo más: un trono donde los descendientes de David gobernarían para siempre, un reino donde judíos y gentiles serían bien recibidos por igual. La actitud devota de María llevó a un mensaje aún más inquietante. Concebiría y daría a luz un hijo a pesar de que aún no estaba casada. “¿Cómo podrá ser esto?”, preguntó María. “El Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre ti”, le contestó el Ángel (Lucas 1:35). La aceptación de María de este difícil desafío marcó el comienzo de esta, la era final del Reino de Dios. Lo que antes era un secreto conocido solo por el pueblo elegido como el Rey David y sus descendientes ahora debe quedar claro a todos para que, como escribió San Pablo a los romanos, podamos llegar a la “obediencia de la fe”, “en cumplimiento del designio eterno de Dios” (Romanos 16:26).
