PASTORAL REFLECTIONS

From water to wine, Jesus performs His first miracle at the wedding at Cana. What miracle can He perform in your life?

I have always loved this gospel reading. Jesus at a wedding with His mother and the conversation is as follows:

Mary: They have no wine.

Jesus: Woman how does your concern affect Me? My hour has not yet come.

Mary: (to the servers) Do whatever He tells you.

We all know the rest of the story. But have we ever pondered it? Meditated on it? When I think of this moment between a mother and a child, I look at it from the perspective of the parent and then as the child. When I am the parent I think about how the proper encouragement, gestures or words can put a child on a path and give both clarification and direction to a loved one. In a brief encounter, a private encounter between Jesus and His mother, His public ministry started. What would have happened if Jesus said, “No thanks mom, can I do this later?” What would have happened if Mary didn’t subtly and humbly guide her child? As a parent there are moments where I would like to be not so subtle and maybe stand on a table and make a point as I raise teenagers. But the Blessed Mother always seems to guide me. She is always just a prayer away. She is always a model for me in all moments. When I reflect on the image of her at the wedding, I think about how two sentences were enough to encourage Jesus to understand the course He was about to take. A mother encouraging a son, a parent encouraging a child, a spiritual father encouraging one of his many children…..

Encouragement. Don’t we all need to be encouraged? In looking at this scripture as a child, I think about such moments. Even Jesus needed to be encouraged. In my spiritual life if I didn’t have encouragement, I am not sure where I would be. I am not sure if I would have grown. I am not sure I would hear God’s voice in my life. With encouragement, I am exactly where I am meant to be, I have grown and I do my best to listen to God’s voice in my life. Such encouragement leads to a growth in holiness. Encouragement can come from a husband, a wife, a mother, a father, a friend, a priest. It does not matter who offers the words. Rather, the words must be given.

In this new year, who do you need to encourage? I invite you to pause, pray and encourage someone. You never know what it may lead to….

With love, encouragement and blessings,

Mary Jo Armen, Pastoral Associate for Catechetics

After all Masses on January 16th and 17th and 23rd and 24th, a set of two boxed 9" white taper candles will be available for order for a donation of $5.00. Candles purchased will be labeled and blessed at the 11:30 AM Mass on January 31st, and may be taken home after. Parishioners are invited to bring any other candles they would like blessed on Candlemas to the Rectory by Friday, January 29th. Please make sure they are marked with your name.
