THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME – November 13, 2016

Part 2: What do the pictures in the stained

glass in the Main Church depict?

This week we’ll take a look at the four winged

creatures above the main exit to the Narthex. The four creatures represent the four Gospel writers, each

of whom has a special symbol attached to him:

Head of a man: St. Matthew is represented by a man because of his focus on Jesus’ lineage and Jesus’

Incarnation (God becoming man).

Lion: St. Mark is depicted by a lion because he relies on the prophet Isaiah in his Gospel as “the voice in the desert crying,” similar to that of a lion’s roar.

Ox: St. Luke is represented by an ox because oxen were a common sacrificial offering, and St. Luke’s

Gospel includes many instances of sacrifice, especially emphasizing Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross.

Eagle: St. John the Evangelist is represented by an eagle because his Gospel it is the most profound of

the Gospels and focuses on rising up to new levels of knowledge of the mysteries of God.

Tune in next week for the final part of this series!

In our weekly “Did you know?” section, we’ll try to explain “mysteries of the Mass” and other parts of the

Catholic faith. If you have a question you’d like to submit, please email [email protected].
