A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Fifth Sunday of Lent March 29, 2020

“I will put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you in your own land, thus you shall know that I am the Lord. I have promised, and I will do it, says the Lord… If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised Christ from the dead, will give life to your mortal bodies also, through the spirit dwelling in you.” Jesus told us He came that we might have life, and have it in its fullness. The pending celebration of Holy Week and the Paschal Mystery are the steps He took to restore us to that life. As He brought Lazarus from death, He wishes us to be renewed. His promises never fail and He wishes to give life to our mortal bodies. What is this life? It is the life of grace, the very life of God, given as a gift, and accept-ed. Is the spirit of God dwelling in you? Do you want Him to restore you to life in abundance? Perhaps the Sacrament of Reconciliation, confession, are the steps we can take to be sure that His gift is in us. We never learned how Lazarus felt when Jesus touched him. How will you feel?

ing of large crowds” so the possibility of con-tracting and spreading the Coronavirus is

With our promise of prayers for your family dur-ing Holy Week, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Father Marc

Prayer of Pope Francis for Protection and Help O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of sal-vation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm. You…know what we need, and we are sure you will pro-vide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our suffer-ings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

It is advised you place this reminder at a convenient location in your home, for your future reference. God Bless You. Fr. Marc

The days and months ahead may be inconvenient or may turn out to be really trying. Whatever comes our way, this is a time to practice our faith that we are united as one body in Christ, that we are invited to uphold each other in prayer, and that we are called to be present to each other ei-

ther through listening or through reaching out. Weekly envelopes support the Church by assist-ing in the payment of bills and by keeping our Church fis-cally sound. During this time of having to cancel Masses be-cause of the coronavirus, you may drop-off your collection envelopes in the mail slot of the Parish House or mail them to 32 St. James Place, Totowa, 07512. Everyone’s envelopes assist in the health and prosperity of our parish. We thank you for your continued generosity and kindness to St. James. Stay safe and healthy!

Music classes aim to promote an appreciation and knowledge of music according to the dif-ferent grade levels of the children. PK and K learn about basic skills in music like steady

beat and playing simple rhythms on rhythm instruments. They always sing some religious, patriotic or fun songs or do movement activities. 1st and 2nd learned about important musical instruments of the Orchestra by watching the delightful story “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokovfiev where each character in the story was represented by an instrument. 3rd and 4th grade are reading and playing simple songs on the RECORDER, a small flute for children besides understanding some basic music skills a little more. 5th grade studied the history of jazz while 6th grade was learning about the 7 elements that make up music: tempo, dynamics, melody, rhythm, tone color, and to come: form and harmony. Of course, with simple examples that make them appreciate and understand what goes in to making music. 7th and 8th grade were following the development of music through the ages: both the instruments and music steadily evolved from prehistoric music through the Middle Ages and onward. The lives of a few composers were studied, together with one of their pieces of music.

We had also been reviewing or learning a new song for our weekly school Liturgy. The students also know various Patriotic songs which we had been using at the daily Flag Salute in the Morning Assembly.

Hopefully the students are learning that a lot goes in to the making of music and that music is a gift that can provide a message of hope, express loyalty to our country and that there is beauty in different styles of mu-sic.

The Holy Father Calls us to Prayer and Imparts his Apostolic Blessing Urbi et Orbi

Dear brothers in Christ, The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has invited all of the Christian faithful to take part in two opportunities that will strengthen human solidarity as we implore God's deliverance from this hour of difficulty. On March 25th, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, the Holy Father has invited all Christians to pray the Our Father as we, in the words of the Holy Father, "prepare to celebrate the victory of the risen Christ." And on March 27th, the Holy Father will impart his Urbi et Orbi blessing to the city and the world. In communion with our Holy Father, I ask all parishes and religious houses to observe the extraordinary March 27th Urbi et Orbi blessing by the Holy Father, in this way, to the degree possible: At 1:00 in the afternoon, 6:00 in the evening Rome time when the Holy Father will be praying in Saint Peter's Basilica, ring the bells of your church or chapel, or participate in a virtual ringing of bells through your social media platform. I invite all the faithful to recite an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be at this time as they join the Holy Father via television or the internet on the Vatican YouTube channel. When the Holy Father imparts the blessing, those who intend to make a sacramental confession, receive Holy Communion, and offer a prayer for the Holy Father, as soon as that is possible again, will receive a Plenary Indulgence. Please publicize these special opportunities for prayer to the best of your ability and know that I am always united with you in prayer as I bring you and the needs of your communities to the Lord at the altar. With a prayer for the Lord's blessing, and invoking the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Consolation, upon you and your communities, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Arthur J. Serratelli, S.T.D., S.S.L., D.D. Bishop of Paterson

Diocese of Paterson, 777 Valley Road, Clifton, NJ 07013

Pastor’s Message (3) 3/20/20

When you miss someone you love, you truly do not feel like yourself. Emotional drain may occur during the time of separation. And, in the midst of being separated, mental energy is lessened. For healing to happen, one thing is needed. Closeness is necessary with him or her. You may not be truly feeling like yourself because the Jesus you love cannot be received in Holy Communion at daily Mass now. In addition, emotional drain may have increased and mental energy has lessened in your day-to-day living, because all public worship is cancelled. For healing to occur in your life, there is an antidote. It is closeness with Him, the Lord you love. Therefore, come to our parish church for private prayer and be with Jesus, the One I am sure you love. I promise you, that every day you will find the lights on and the doors unlocked from 5:00am to 7:00pm. Moreover, there will be Eucharistic Adoration from 12 noon to 3:00pm every weekday and Saturday, as well as each Sunday, from 9:00am-Noon. He has not left us during this time of hardship. He is with you and me. May each of us who love Jesus draw closer to Him, in accord with the opportunities offered at our parish church. Peace, Fr. Marc 3/20/20

PASTOR’S MESSSAGE (4) 3/23/20

Don’t let COVID-19 “take you down.”

Indeed, the COVID-19 virus can have a serious impact on us physically. And, we must continue to do everything we can to avoid it. Absolutely! However, as devastating as it could be on us physically, at this time, let the following recommendations be practiced daily, so it doesn’t mentally “take us down.” 1. Think positively 2. Walk confidently 3. Speak carefully 4. Exercise frequently 5. Love generously 6. Hope continually 7. Pray fervently. Keep the faith. Remember, there is nothing you and God cannot do together. Peace, Fr. Marc
