FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

SNOWY MORNING MASS… I can’t forget one morning mass at St. Patrick’s Church in Yorktown Heights, New York (Northern Westchester County). It was the blizzard of January, 1996 and we had over two feet of snow. I had the early mass (6:55 AM) the morn-ing after the blizzard had ended. Well that day, I could hardly open the door of the rectory to get out because of the amount of snow piled up against the door. I finally made it out and trudged through the powdery mix which was almost waist high. Opening the church and turning on the lights, understandably, there was-

n’t a soul in sight! No one was going to come out in a storm like this. But I waited about fifteen minutes and then began the mass alone without any congregation. About halfway through the mass, I heard the front door of the church creak open. Into the church walked sixteen year old Danny Scavino. Danny, a high school student, was an altar boy and a member of the youth group. He was all covered with snow, shovel in hand. When he saw me stand-ing there up at the altar, He broke the pristine silence of the church on that snowy morning. Danny yelled out, “Father, what are you doing?” I replied, “I’m saying mass!” “By yourself? He said, “I thought you were talk-ing to yourself!” So I had to explain that I really was talking to God! The idea of a private mass was strange to Danny. Of course, he was right. The Church always prefers to have someone in attendance at mass-even just a single server to be there. But the mass even without any-body present is valid. I always like to think that the angels and saints are there whenever I say a private mass. The mass is a miracle of God’s grace and we priests should always appreciated the privilege of offering the Ho-ly Eucharist every day. However, I suppose even the most sublime realities can become dull after some years. For instance, one does not get the same thrill offering mass after thirty years that one had on Ordination Day! Still the mass is what I would call an “Awesome” thing. All of us really should be in “Awe” of Christ coming down to our al-tars in the hands of an unworthy priest./ Whenever I need to revive my appreciation of what the mass truly is, I think of a very saintly priest by the name of Fr. Walter Ciszek. Fr. Ciszek was a member of the Jesuit Order who went to Soviet Russia in 1939 to spread the Gospel there. Unfortunately, Father was accused of being a Vatican spy. He was then im-prisoned for fifteen years in Lubianka Jail and thereafter spent many years working in labor camps in Siberia. Fr. Ciszek said that he looked for every opportunity to save a little bread and obtain a few drops of wine so that he could say mass. He would arrange for fellow inmates to attend. Mass would be offered in his cell, in the woods or in a basement. Of course, there were no beautiful vestments, fragrant incense, stained glass win-dows and majestic hymns. Despite this, the mass was valid! As fr. Ciszek wrote: “In these primitive conditions, the Mass brought you closer to God than anyone might conceivably imagine. The realization of what was happening on the board, the box, or the stone used in place on altar penetrated deep into the soul.” Very inspiring words that should all make us think of how fortu-nate we are to have the mass every day-even the snowiest ones!

God love you! Father Jerome
