Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Feast Day: September 8

In this ‘Year of Faith’ I’m

explaining the revised

Roman Missal orations that were not on a Sunday last

year. May our reflections on

these theologically beautiful

Mass orations, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts, help us grow in FAITH! Today is nine months since

we celebrated the Immaculate Conception: that great moment when, in the womb of Saint Ann, our

Blessed Mother was conceived without Original Sin,

thus her title, ‘The New Eve.’ However, today invites

us to do much more than sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to our Blessed Mother!

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Collect

Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace

to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation.

When Exactly Did Christ Save Us? Since we are confined by time and space, we think in ‘limited’ terms: when is the actual Consecration? How much of the holy Mass must I attend to fulfill my obligation? At what moment did Christ save us: when He rose on Easter? Breathed His last on Good Friday? Was born in Bethlehem? Was conceived in Mary’s womb in Nazareth? Perhaps it is better to see the Mass and Salvation History as a ‘day’ - but as the Bible describes a ‘day’ for God, for whom ‘one day is like a thousand years!’ [Cf. Psalm 90:4 & 2 Peter 3:8]

Today’s Collect calls our Blessed Mother’s birth the ‘dawn’ of a ‘day’ which God planned at that darkest ‘pre-dawn’ moment when Adam and Eve fell from grace! When God said to the serpent, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; They will strike at your head, while you strike at their heel” [Genesis 3:15] God was speaking about the first Eve and her children AND the New Eve and her Son who conquered sin and death! Mary’s birth like the dawn of a day we have longed for, like a marriage or ordination; after all the ‘prep work’ is done, we marvel that the ‘day’ is finally here! The Virgin’s birth was the culmination of the work God did for centuries, prophets and monarchs, countless holy men and women, who all rejoice with us as God’s promise to Adam and Eve is fulfilled in Mary!

Nativity of the BVM - Prayer over the Offerings

May the humanity of your Only Begotten Son come, O Lord, to our aid, and may he,

who at his birth from the Blessed Virgin did not diminish but consecrated her integrity,

by taking from us now our wicked deeds, make our oblation acceptable to you.

As we celebrate with joy the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we bring you our offerings,

O Lord, and we humbly pray to be given strength by the humanity of your Son,

who from her was pleased to take flesh.

One ‘Sacrifice’ - many ‘sacrifices.’ Both options refer to Christ’s willingness to become human flesh so He could suffer and die to redeem us. For God cannot die; He needed a human body, fashioned from a human mother. While we can never diminish Christ’s ‘once for all’ sacrifice by which we were saved, we cannot overlook or forget the countless sacrifices made by many others who made Christ’s sacrifice possible, and who now enable it to continue until the end of time. Today we honor the birth of the one who straddled both time spans, and who literally ‘gave her all’ so that Christ could redeem us!

Although the Virgin’s birth is not recorded in the Bible, it is a necessary fact; and her ability to pray so eloquently, as she did in her Magnificat, suggests someone taught her the Scriptures. In sacred art, Saint Anne, the name given by non-biblical sources to her mother, is often depicted reading the Scriptures to Mary as seen above; sometimes her father, Joachim, is seen with them. Do you teach the Bible to your children?

Nativity of the BVM - Prayer after Communion

May your Church exult, O Lord, for you have renewed her with these sacred mysteries, as she

rejoices in the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was the hope and the daybreak

of salvation for all the world.

Hope. This prayer echoes the Collect, adding that this feast instills in us the hope that God will always be faithful to His promises! As was said of Mary, “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” [Luke 1:48] Do you also believe?

28/29th. Your child should come downstairs to the parish

center to at either the 5:00pm Saturday mass or the

10:30am Sunday mass to sign in before mass begins. After

signing in they should return to their families in preparation

for the special learning sessions which will take place at

each of these masses for the remainder of the year.

Communicants as well as all those who have received the

Sacrament of the Eucharist are reminded to attend

Sunday Mass weekly.

WHY ST. MARY CHILDREN’S CHOIR?By Andrea Covais

It’s that time of year again and children’s calendars arefilling up with a host of activities for the school year. Is itreally possible to add one more thing to the list?

Children’s Choir is one of the most wonderfuladditions to any schedule and does not involvea huge time commitment. We meet for anhour a week (Fridays from 4:30 to 5:30pm inchurch) for rehearsal and sing on Sundays atthe 10:30am Mass as well as special occasions

such as Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday, and other Holydays. But what makes Children’s Choir special? First,children are given the opportunity to make new friends,learn positive social and communication skills, learn thebenefits of volunteering, build self confidence, and sharetheir musical talents in an enjoyable environment. Thechoir performs concerts throughout the year and childrenare given the opportunity to sing at the Basilica of theSacred Heart in Newark, a fun and inspiring experience forall involved. Second, the children are actively engaged inthe liturgy, not passive participants of the congregation,but full participants in the Mass each week. Thisencourages a greater understanding and love for theMass. Finally, I am often asked why a child should join ourchurch choir if they are already in a chorus at school.Children’s Choir is the one place children learn not onlyabout music but also about their faith at the same time.Music is the vessel with which they learn about God’smany mysteries and lessons and this you will not findanywhere else. The annual Rutherford town wide fall registration for all new

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will be held on Thursday,

September 12, 2013, between 6:30PM and 8:00PM.

Registration will be held in the Rutherford Borough Hall-Council

Chambers, 176 Park Avenue, Floor 2, Rutherford, NJ. Cub

Scouting is open to all boys entering grades 1 through 5. Pack

meeting are normally held on the third Friday evening of each

month. Additional Pack outings are held every month. Boy

Scouting is open to all boys entering grades 6 through 12. Troop

meeting are normally held every Tuesday evening. Additional

SECOND COLLECTION

To Aid the Church in Central and Eastern Europe

THIS weekend, a second collection will go to aid the Church in

Central and Eastern Europe. In this part of the world the Church,

emerging from many years of communist rule, is vigorously

involved in rebuilding the faith of its people. Proceeds will help

provide the resources to grow and nourish the faith in the section

of the world.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEFirst Reading: Wisdom 9:13-18b

This reading acknowledges that people have had a difficult

time attempting to know God's wishes. At times we have

difficulty understanding the things that happen on earth.

Therefore, learning of things in heaven would have been

impossible, except that God sent us wisdom and the Holy

Spirit to help us understand him.

Second Reading: Philemon 9-10, 12-17

Paul writes to Philemon regarding Onesimus, a slave who ran

away and encountered Paul. Although Paul wished Onesimus

could remain with him, he did not want to violate Philemon's

wishes. Paul asks that Philemon receives his friend Onesimus

as a beloved brother, not as a slave. He closes by saying,

"Welcome him as you would me."

Gospel: Luke 14:25-33

Jesus warns people who wish to follow him that they must

abandon everyone else first. A person calculates the amount

of money needed to complete a project before they begin it.

In the same way, Jesus warns these people to consider

exactly what is involved before they make a commitment to
