“Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!” These iconic words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr came to mind as I thought about today’s celebration of our National Independence and the freedoms that have been restored to us now that the threats of the pandemic have subsided. The latest directive from the Office of the Bishop of Brooklyn lifts not only the capacity limits in churches; but also, social distancing and the wearing of masks! The CDC though recommends that the unvaccinated should continue wearing a mask. Of course, those who are vaccinated can choose to wear a mask in church. The diocese has stipulated that priests, deacons, and Extraordinary Ministers should continue to sanitize their hands and wear masks when distributing Holy Communion. Those who desire to receive Holy Communion on their tongue must also remain at the end of the Communion line.

The saying rings true: “you never know the value of something until you lose it.” Valuing the precious gift of life from the moment of conception until natural death has been and continues to be our Creed. These past arduous and painful months have restricted freedoms, but they have also threatened/taken lives. We continue to pray for those who suffer the loss of a loved one during the pandemic. Let us also renew our efforts as a parish to be an authentic community of believers. May we always respect and care for one another as brothers and sisters, as friends of Jesus Christ, in all times and seasons. Freedom always comes at a price. For the birth of our Nation, the price was the spilt blood of many souls. May the happiness of our Pre-K students below, move us to appreciate more than ever the gift of our freedom. Firmly rooted in unity, we celebrate our diversity under God whose providence provides for us and encourages us to love one another. God Bless America! - Father Fonti

PRO-LIFE CORNER

"…we are facing an enormous and dramatic clash between good and evil, death and life, the “culture of death” and the “culture of life”. We find ourselves not only “faced with” but necessarily “in the midst of” this conflict: we are all involved and we all share in it, with the inescapable responsibility of choosing to be unconditionally pro-life." - St. John Paul II

The Cenacles of Life

The Cenacles of Life are prayer groups that pray as the Blessed Mother and the Apostles prayed in the Upper Room, awaiting the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. They pray – as should all Catholics – to stop the

killing of the unborn, sick, and disabled. The goal of the Prayer Group: restore respect for the sanctity of life which has so frighteningly eroded in our country and world. Please come and pray with St. Mel’s Cenacle of Life: Thursdays @ 11:00 AM in the church
