Dear Parishioners,This weekend we celebrate the World Day of the Poor. Pope
Francis initiated this day four years ago to help us remember the poor. Every country has poor people and every country has people who are able to help the poor. The Pope quotes from the Old Testament, from the book Sirach, “stretch forth your hand to the poor.” Sirach lived almost two hundred years before Christ and it was well known then that helping the poor was a duty of those who believe in God. Similar messages are in multiple books and letters throughout the Bible. “Stretch forth your hand to the poor” is a summons to responsibility and commitment as women and men who are part of our one human family.
Thirty-one years ago, November 16, 1989, Fr. Ignacio Ella-curia, SJ, the Jesuit president of the University of Central America in San Salvador, El Salva-dor, was dragged from his bed in the middle of the night and assassinated. The Atlacatl Bat-talion of the Salvadoran Army committed this crime and went further in leaving no witness-es. Five other Jesuit priests, their housekeeper, and her daughter were also assassinated that evening: Frs. Ignacio Martin-Baro, SJ, Segun-do Montes, SJ, Juan Ramon Moreno Pardo, SJ, Joaquin Lopez y Lopez, SJ, Amando Lopez, SJ, Elba Ramos and her 15 year old daughet Celina Ramos. They became part of the thousands of people who were killed during that war in El Salvador. In-cluded in the number was Fr. Rutilio Grande, SJ, Bishop Oscar Romero, now Saint Oscar Romero, Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU, Sr. Ita Ford, MM, Sr. Maura Clarke, MM, and Jean Donovan, a member of Caritas.
Mark Chmiel, professor at Mercy College, has written: “The Jesuits’ work was based on the promotion of human rights for the poor majorities as the most effective way of realizing the common good. Their lives dramatically incarnated a founda-tional Christian truth: Fidelity can lead straight to the Cross. Ellacuría once offered a spiritual exercise for the present age of atrocity that called people of good will to struggle so that others can experience a more abundant life: I want you to set your eyes and your hearts on these people who are suffering so much—some from poverty and hunger, others from op-pression and repression. Ellacuria said, since I am a Jesuit,
Ask yourselves: What have I done to crucify them? What do I do to uncrucify them? What must I do for this people to rise again?”
The Jesuits of El Salvador stretched forth their hand to the
Estimados Feligreses:
Pobres.

poor and were martyred. The four churchwomen were doing the same and were martyred. Their deaths made the reality of oppression painfully, mortally present in that space. Their lives and efforts were honored by peaceful protests across the Americas. In Georgia where many armies from other nations
-ing the United States to stop such training. That peaceful pro-test has grown over the years and today, the Ignatian Solidarity Network continues it. The ISN reaches beyond that protest to other forms of injustices that prevail here and everywhere. Every year we remember the Martyrs of El Salvador and add many more names of those who have died for stretching out their hand to the poor across the globe. “In 1972, the supe-rior general of the Society of Jesus, Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ, be-gan to encourage Jesuits worldwide to dedicate themselves to the service of faith and the promotion of justice. Fr. Arrupe warned the Jesuits and their colleagues would suffer greatly if they boldly engaged in the struggle for justice. Since that date, 63 Jesuits have been martyred along with many others who have witnessed to a faith that does justice. Let us pray and be inspired to also work for justice and stretch our hands to the poor We remember them this weekend in the context of the Pope’s message for the fourth World Day of the Poor. .
We have placed crosses on the lawn next to the Church un-der the Black Lives Matter Banner. It you are able, come by and say a prayer. If you are not able, say this prayer as a way of thanking them for their dedication to the poor and hopefully, a motivating prayer for us to stretch forth our hand to the poor.
Let us pray: After each name, you may say “presente”, a word used to indicate their
spirit is here among us.Fr. Ignacio Ellacuria. Fr. Ignacio Martin-Baro, SJ. Fr. Juan Moreno

RETIREMENT FUND FOR WOMEN RELIGIOUS
NOVEMBER 21ST & 22ND
PLEASE GIVE TO THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN A LIFETIME. In good times and bad, women religious have dedicated themselves to God’s work. For
decades, they educated the young, tended the sick, and ministered to the needy. Today,
they pray for a world that is hurting. Yet many religious communities have insufficient
retirement savings and struggle to provide for aging members.
Your tax-deductible gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps furnish medications,
nursing care, and more.
Your donation can be sent to or dropped off at the Parish Office
or you can make an online donation: giving.parishsoft.com/app/giving/stignatius
We will be conducting this annual collection next weekend.
St. Ignatius once again welcomes members of several communities of women religious to share their

BLACK CATHOLIC HISTORY MONTH
Since 1990, the U.S. has
recognized November as
Black Catholic History Month.
Black Catholics bear diverse heritages of both
jubilation & oppression
in the Church.
While we must celebrate their
accomplishments and contributions to
Catholicism, we are also called to
uplift their voices of experience and work to
identity & dismantle racism in the Church to
cultivate justice.
See the bulletin and our social media to learn
about the history of
Black Catholics along with us!
Green TeamPrayer:
God of all, we confess our complicity in failing to be good stewards of your creation. We ask your forgiveness as we seek to live in the light, walking gently on your earth, looking for ways to
replenish what we have taken away, to heal what we have damaged.
Pledge to “Give it up for the Earth” In the encyclical Laudato Si', Pope Francis finds kinship with the environmental teachings of Patriarch
Bartholomew, leader of the Eastern Orthodox Church. “He asks us to replace consumption with sacrifice,
greed with generosity, wastefulness with a spirit of sharing, an asceticism which ‘entails learning to give, and
not simply to give up. It is a way of loving, of moving gradually away from what I want to what
God’s world needs.”
We ask you to take steps daily to permanently reduce your own carbon footprint.
The following are some examples:
1. Never put plastic bags into single-stream recycling bins-- they gum up the machinery. After maximum
re-use, all plastic bags (e.g., CVS, Glad, sandwich) should be returned to plastic bins in stores that recycle, or
your town’s recycle center.
2. When collapsing cardboard boxes to enable more space within the recycling truck, strip tape off the
cardboard and put the tape in regular trash.
3. If pizza boxes are permitted in recycling, remove wax paper lining and any food.
4. Rinse out cans, bottles, and plastic containers before putting them into recycle bins.

with Migration Lectures and Programs
For the month of November, an exact replica of the Angels Unawares sculpture that is permanently installed at
St. Peter's Square in Rome will be on display at
Boston College in O'Neill Plaza.
The 3.5-ton, life-sized work was commissioned by Cardinal Michael Czerny, S.J., to draw attention to the
global phenomenon of migration and "the evangelical
challenge of welcoming," as stated by Pope Francis.
A full slate of lectures and events addressing migration and featuring BC faculty are scheduled throughout
November.
All events are virtual and free, and require registration. Please join us!
