Little things do count! “He who is faithful in very little is faithful also in much, and he who is dishonest in very little is

dishonest also in much.” (Luke 16:10) Fraud, embezzlements, lying, and injustices of every sort seem all too prevalent today. Christians, however, must not be among the perpetrators of such sinful actions. How we act in our daily dealings with others is of great importance to our Lord. Jesus wants us to be faithful to God and faithful to others. Jesus wants us to be honest. Honest toward God and others. The clue to living a righteous life seems to be making us accountable and truthful in all our relationships. We begin by being faithful and honest in what we might call the “little things.” If we, with God’s help, will discipline ourselves to shun so-called “little white lies,” small thefts, minor breaches of trust, petty digs at another’s character, tiny lapses in morality, we will be strengthened when it comes to larger tests of character. The Lord indicated that faithfulness and honesty in the little things prepares us for faithfulness and honesty in the major crunches of life.

Who are your serving? When the devil is called the God of this world, it is not because he made it, but because

we serve him with our worldliness. (St. Thomas Aquinas)

Inspired by their names. Consider the truths we can learn even in how the Lord has named his angels:

Michael: “One who is like God.” Do we remember to worship God? Do we seek through prayer, service and study to become more like him?

Gabriel: “The strength of God.” Do we stand strong in the face of temptation, or when our faith is challenged? Can we do more to defend our weaker brothers & sisters in Christ?

Raphael: “God’s remedy.” How often do we emulate Raphael and be God’s healing to a wounded world, bringing comfort even when we cannot cure?

SOUNDS OF SILENCE (SOS). After a suicide...there are people who understand. The Sounds of Silence Support Group meets at Parkway Funeral and Cremation Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway on the first and third Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. (September-May). If you have questions, please call Brenda at 426-1021.

The Saint Mary’s Central High School Homecoming Breakfast will be Sunday, September 25th from 9am-1pm in the school cafeteria. Proceeds from the french toast, sausage and fruit breakfast will benefit the SMCHS Music Department. Free will offering. Please come enjoy the food and fellowship.

Stewardship Thoughts: Stewardship calls us to generously share what we have with others as members of one Christian community. Stewardship focuses on our dependence on God which goes against society’s focus on independence.

The Holy Father Speaks...Pope Francis said, “Jesus presents us the true face of God, a God with his arms always open, a God who deals with sinners with tenderness and compassion,” the Pope told the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square. “God awaits our returning to the journey, he awaits us with patience, he sees us when we are still a long way off, he runs to meet us, he embraces us, he kisses us, he forgives us.” The Pope added: Let me ask you a question: Have you ever thought about how each time we go to the confessional, there is joy and celebration of heaven? Have you ever thought of this? It’s beautiful. This fills us with a great hope because there is no sin in which we may have fallen, from which, with the grace of God, we cannot rise up again. There is never a person who can’t be recovered; no one is unrecoverable, because God never stops wanting our good--even when we sin!

Marriage Moments: “Marriage is not 50-50. Divorce is 50-50. Marriage has to be 100-100. It isn’t dividing everything in half, but giving everything you’ve got.” (Dave Willis)Parenting Pointers: School is in full swing for most families. MERCY AND HOPE by MIKE PACER

We need hope in our world. Flowing forth from the Heart of Jesus is a torrent of mercy that is the source of this much needed hope. Discover how in God’s mercy we find a reason for joy here on earth and a reasonable expectation for eternal joy in Heaven. Mike’s engaging and straightforward approach sheds light on the following:

The merciful and loving God revealed in the Old Testament Jesus Christ as the source of mercy and reason for hope The hope imparted through the message of Divine Mercy given to St. Faustina. Mary’s role as the Mother of Mercy and Hope

Hope is not merely a feeling, but also an action through which our lives are transformed. Mike provides practical suggestions on how we can live more joyful lives through being merciful to others and receiving mercy ourselves.

This book and others can be found on the book rack downstairs in the lower gathering space.A $4.00 donation is suggested for each book to help us continue this program.

AFTERNOON AT THE MOVIES WITH A SAINTJoin us for popcorn and “Life for Life”, a movie about St. Maximillian Kolbe, on Wednesday afternoon, September 21, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in room 140 (Youth Room) on the lower level. All are welcome! NOTE: The south door to the school will be open for easy access to this room.

The setting for this movie is Auschwitz, the German Concentration camp, in 1941. One among the convicts is Fr. Maximillian Kolbe, a Franciscan priest who volunteered to die in place of one of the inmates. Another key character emerges, Brother Anselm. He is a devout young Franciscan priest who quietly but strongly witnesses to Kolbe’s heroic faith and love, and then rejoices at the Beatification of Kolbe by Pope Paul VI. Later Kolbe will be canonized by his fellow countryman, St. Pope John Paul II, who proclaimed Kolbe as the “patron saint of the difficult 20th century”.

Sunday, September 18, 2016twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary timeWe pray our faithFaith is lived. But it’s also prayed. Today Catechetical Sunday considers the theme, “Prayer: the Faith Prayed.” Perhaps the most distinguishing thing we Catholics do is gather to pray: at Mass and sacraments, the blessing before meals, the Liturgy of the Hours, or to share a Rosary. Prayer isn’t always formal or complex. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux called prayer a surge of the heart, a simple look toward heaven. Saint Francis de Sales wittily declared, “Every one of us needs half an hour of prayer each day except when we’re busy—then we need an hour.” Renew your commitment to daily prayer.

Today’s readings: Amos 8:4-7; 1 Timothy 2:1-8; Luke 16:10-13 (135). “It is my wish, then, that in every place [the people] should pray, lifting up holy hands.”

mOnday, September 19 memOrial Of JanuariuS, biShOp, martyrHalfway thereJanuarius, patron saint of Naples and a third-century bishop, was martyred during one of the persecutions of Christians common in the ancient Roman empire. Today, a cathedral in Naples contains a vial kept in a reliquary said to hold some of the saint’s congealed blood. Three times a year the vial is removed and the blood liquefies. In March 2015 during Pope Francis’ visit to Naples, the blood half liquefied when the pope kissed the reliquary. Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe of Naples declared, “The blood has half liquefied, which shows that Saint Januarius loves our pope and Naples.” Pope Francis responded, “We can see the saint only half loves us. We must all spread the word, so that he loves us more!” Let’s help spread the word!

Today’s readings: Proverbs 3:27-34; Luke 8:16-18 (449). “No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lamp stand, so that those who enter may see the light.”

tueSday, September 20 memOrial Of andrew Kin tae-GOn, prieSt, and paul ChOnG ha-SanG, and COmpaniOnS, martyrSCourage of convictionsMartyrdom means bearing witness to the truth with one’s death. There have been a multitude of Christians—from the first martyr Saint Stephen up to the present—who have been willing to die rather than give up their beliefs. Although most Christians aren’t tested to the point of making this ultimate sacrifice, each still must choose to take up the cross and endure hardship and struggle. When faced with challenges, look to the martyrs for strength and support in keeping the faith.

Today’s readings: Proverbs 21:1-6, 10-13; Luke 8:19-21 (450). “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

wedneSday, September 21 feaSt Of matthew, apOStle and evanGeliStThe little we know is enoughHistory has dimmed some of what we know about Matthew the Apostle. He may or may not have been the author of the gospel

that bears his name. Possibly he was called Levi. Probably he was martyred but we are not sure. And we do not know when he died or where he is buried. What we do know is that Matthew was one of the first apostles and before that, he had been a tax collector. Those two facts tell us that Jesus was not afraid to reach out to those who were looked down upon, the scorned and the outcasts. He calls those who are imperfect to come and follow him. So you and I have no excuse. We may feel we are not worthy, but we cannot hide behind that. All are called to follow.

Today’s readings: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13; Matthew 9:9-13 (643). “I have come to call, not the self-righteous, but sinners.”

thurSday, September 22Bedazzle the mundaneTo us, everyday life may sometimes feel mun-dane, but not to God. “It is possible that God says every morning, ‘Do it again’ to the sun; and every evening, ‘Do it again’ to the moon,” G.K. Chesterton wrote. “It may not be automatic ne-cessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never

got tired of making them.” Perhaps to God, all things are new—beautiful creations set to dazzle the world. Try to enter each day in the same mindset, ready for goodness and steeped in grace.

Today’s readings: Ecclesiastes 1:2-11; Luke 9:7-9 (452). “Even the thing of which we say, ‘See, this is new!’ has already existed in the ages that preceded us.”

Given the name Pio (Pius) when he became a Capuchin Franciscan, he is often venerated as having the sacred stigmata, the marks of Jesus’ Passion on his own body. The church maintains neutrality over miraculous signs, but there is no argument over Padre Pio’s kindness, compassion, and mercy—all for the love of Christ. Such compassion is a genuine miracle in our times, when all of us are wounded—not by the marks of Christ, but by hardness of heart. Perform a miracle today—soften your heart.

Today’s readings: Ecclesiastes 3:1-11; Luke 9:18-22 (453). “But who do you say that I am?”
