Hymn of Praise

I AM THINEVerse 1

I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,And it told Thy love to me;

But I long to rise in the arms of faith,And be closer drawn to Thee.

ChorusDraw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,

To the cross where Thou hast died;Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,

To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Verse 2Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,

By the pow’r of grace divine; Let my soul look upwith a steadfast hope, and my will be lost in Thine.

Verse 3O, the pure delight of a single hour

That before Thy throne I spend,When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God,

I commune as friend with friend.

Verse 4There are depths of love that I cannot know

Till I cross the narrow sea; There are heights of joythat I may not reach Till I rest in peace with Thee.

Unison ScriptureNEHEMIAH 1:1-10 (NIV)

1The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah: In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, 2Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.

3They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.” 4When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. 5Then I said: “Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, 6let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and

night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. 7We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

8“Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, 9but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’

10“They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.

Minister: Tithing is the biblical principle of returning 10% to God first.

Congregation: The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

Minister: Debt is a spiritual issue. We are robbing God’s people when we live beyond our means, refuse to budget, invest, save, and tithe; we are seduced by debt.

Congregation: The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is Mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers.

Minister: Tithing, budgeting, and stewardship are the solutions to the spiritual problem of debt.

Congregation: Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.

Minister: Debt is fed by the desire for immediate gratification, poor planning, and the need to keep up appearances.

Congregation: His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

Minister: Tithing, saving, budgeting, and good stewardship of resources is the calling of all Christians.

Congregation: Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Minister: Debt slavery has been used since 1863 to prevent people of African descent from gaining power and independence.

Congregation: Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Minister: Our ancestors were forced into slavery. Today, we volunteer to be enslaved by debt and we mortgage our children’s future.

Together: O God, we have been called to be a debt-free congregation. We are called to teach our community, children, and grandchildren the discipline of tithing, the power of budgeting, the blessing of saving, and the benefit of investing. We desire to live debt-free because it honors God and our ancestors, who died not for debt, but that we may live free with our God. Amen.

Are You Indispensable?

Last week, hundreds of young people made their way to college campuses across the country either to return for another year or to begin their new educational journey in earnest for the first time. Almost simultaneously, thousands of employees from the likes of Kraft Foods, Motorola, McDonalds and others were terminated and unceremoniously escorted off company grounds.

This disturbing industry trend of slashing corporate headquarter jobs in these maturing companies should be a stern warning to unsuspecting students who may be in hot

pursuit of careers in industries that could soon one day be obsolete. Motorola and Kraft alone accounted for 1200 jobs lost and those employees (with families to feed) must now navigate their futures in an era where the “experienced” worker is often devalued.

So it is imperative that while studying diligently, students educate themselves beyond what’s required reading and tap into their true calling. At Endeleo, we extol the virtues of entrepreneurship (think technology) to our Endeleo students to empower them not to be dependent upon just one stream of income. That no one company is ever going to pay what you’re truly worth so embrace your uniqueness and create dual paths to success. Parents are critical in helping to reinforce this ideal so we engage them at every turn.

One such Princeton Park parent is in the photo above with her two sons, one of which has headed off to college. These three outstanding young people assisted Endeleo in its corner store assessment as part of the Healthy Food Financing Initiative to bring healthier food to the Washington Heights community. The intrinsic value of growing up in your community and giving back to it is critical to improving it. As such, Endeleo is seeking to engage more neighborhood students in civic education, urban planning and policy so that we may indeed provide solutions to some of the issues plaguing our community. Job prospects for indispensable people in this are extremely bright.

Renew Our Relationship with GodJanuary (Worship)Zechariah 1:3 (NIV)Therefore tell the people: This is what The Lord Almighty says: ‘Return to me,’ declares the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will return to you,’ says the Lord.

February (Prayer)Deuteronomy 4:29 (NIV)But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him with all your heart and all your soul.

March (Bible Study)Psalm 119:105 (NIV)Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path. I have taken an oath and confirmed it that I will follow your righteous laws.

Reclaim Our African HeritageApril (African Origins of Christianity)Psalm 68:31 (NLT)Let Egypt come with gifts of precious metals; let Ethiopia bring tribute to God. Sing to the God you kings of the earth. Sing praises to the Lord.

May (Black Religion)Isaiah 19:19-21 (NLT)In that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the heart of Egypt, and a monument to the Lord at its borders. It will be a sign and a witness that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies is worshipped in the land of Egypt. When the people cry to the Lord for help against those who oppress them, he will send them a savior who will rescue them.

June (African Diaspora)Zephaniah 3:10 (NIV)My scattered people who lived beyond the rivers of Ethiopia will come to present their offerings. On that day you will no longer need to be ashamed for you will no longer be rebellious against me.

Restore Justice and MercyJuly (Prophetic Mission of the Church)Zechariah 7:9 (NIV)This is what The Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.’

August (Black Liberation Theology)Leviticus 19:34 (NIV)The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am The Lord your God.

September (Social Justice/Activism)Psalm 82:3 (NIV) Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.

Reconnect to Our CommunityOctober (Evangelism)Acts 1:8 (NIV)But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

November (Hospitality)Hebrews 13:2-3 (NIV)Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

December (Servanthood) II Corinthians 3:2-3 (NIV)You yourselves are our letter, written on hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
