Hymn Of Praise Unison Scripture

SWEET, SWEET SPIRIT

There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit In this place,

And I know that it's the Spirit of the Lord;

There are sweet expressions On each face,

And I know they feel the Presence of the Lord.

ChorusSweet Holy Spirit,

Sweet Heavenly Dove,Stay right here with us, Filling us with Your love. And for these blessings

We lift our hearts in praise;Without a doubt we'll know that

We have been revived, When we shall leave this place.

ESTHER 4:16 (CEB)16"Go, gather all the Jews who are in Susa and tell them to give up eating to help me be brave. They aren't to eat or drink anything for three whole days, and I myself will do the same, along with my female servants. Then, even though it's against the law, I will go to the king; and if I am to die, then die I will."

Guest Preacher BioRev. Dr. Renita J. Weems is the co-pastor, with her husband, Rev. Martin L. Espinosa, of the Ray of Hope Community Church in Nashville, Tennessee. She is a biblical scholar, writer, ordained minister, and a public intellectual whose scholarly insights into modern faith, biblical texts, and the role of spirituality in everyday lives make her a highly sought-after writer and speaker.

Rev. Weems accepted her call into Christian ministry in the 1980s and was ordained an elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1984. Before entering the ministry, she worked in the corporate world as a public accountant and

stockbroker. She left corporate America to pursue a career in writing and would eventually go on to write for Essence and Ms. God’s call to ministry a few years later led her to Princeton Theological Seminary where she would go on to pursue studies that would prepare her for ministry, but studies that would lead her for a career as a professor and biblical scholar.

Dr. Weems received her B.A. from Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts, and her Masters and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary, in Princeton, New Jersey. Upon receiving her Ph.D. from Princeton, she became the first African American woman to earn a Ph.D. in Old Testament studies. Invited by Yale University to deliver the prestigious Lyman Beecher Lectures in 2008, she became the first African American woman ever to give the Beecher lectures. Dr. Weems taught in the Divinity School at Vanderbilt University for many years. She has served as the William and Camille Cosby Visiting Professor of Humanities at Spelman College, and, more recently, as the Vice President of Academic Affairs at American Baptist College in Nashville. She has numerous books, commentaries and articles on the Bible and prophetic religion to her credit: “Just A Sister Away”; “I Asked for Intimacy”; “Song of Songs: A Commentary”; Interpreter’s Bible Series, Vol. 5. Her book, “Listening for God: A Minister's Journey Through Silence and Doubt,” (1999) won the Religious Communicators Council's prestigious 1999 Wilbur Award for “excellence in communicating spiritual values to the secular media.”

To Do JusticeAMID ISRAEL’S CALLOUS DISREGARD FOR

HUMAN LIVES: PALESTINIAN LIVES MATTER

Beloved,

On May 14th there was a celebration in Israel, as they celebrated 70 years as a country and simultaneously celebrated the opening of the new United States Embassy as it moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. #45 represented America by sending his daughter and son-in-law to the festivities.

Smiles and blessings all around, a great time was had for all . . . except for the thousands of Palestinians protesting the embassy’s move to the Holy City, where they have been in negotiations for years about Jerusalem’s role as the capital of an eventual Palestinian state. Just as a fire burned in the hearts of Zionists when they began moving to Palestine, fleeing persecution in Russia, so must the fire burn in the hearts of Palestinians, holding on to the

hope of an eventual independent homeland - a homeland in the land of their ancestors.

In the midst of the Israeli celebratory moment, barely 40 miles away, there was a slaughter taking place, as the Israeli Army was shooting indiscriminately into protesting crowds, ultimately resulting in the deadliest day in Gaza since 2014. According to the New York Times, more than 2,700 Palestinian protestors were injured – at least 1,350 by gunfire – and at least 58 people killed. B’Tselem, a leading Israeli human rights organization said:

“The fact that live gunfire is once again the sole measure that the Israeli military is using in the field evinces appalling indifference towards human life on the part of senior Israeli government and military officials,”

While #45 claims that the U.S. “. . . remains fully committed to facilitating a lasting peace agreement” and, Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, proclaims, “What a glorious day,” the existing tension, stoked by the provocation of moving the U.S. Embassy into disputed lands, tells a different story.

This blatant disregard for the sanctity of life must end! Mr. Netanyahu has played #45 like a masterful con man. His weakness in the face of false compliments, hollow praise, and contrived accolades have left America exposed and with blood on our hands, just as if our own soldiers were shooting into those crowds.

In your prayers this week, please include our brothers and sisters in Palestine who are suffering from an apartheid-like oppression as limiting, as confining, and as racially segregating as our family in South Africa, until their eventual victory. Pray for peace. Pray for reconciliation. Pray for reason.

Pray that Palestinian Lives Matter.

Asking you to imagine . . .

2018 CHURCHWIDE THEME

MAYII Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
