One: We gather together to worship the God of our fathers and mothers;

All: the God of Abraham and Sarah, of Miriam and Moses.

* CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious God, we try to be good: forgive us when our goodness makes us

judgmental. We try to be faithful; forgive us when our faithfulness makes us

condescending. Take our best efforts, O Lord, and transform them by your grace

and goodness. We ask your forgiveness as we silently confess our sins.

* PRIVATE CONFESSION OF SIN (in silence)

* DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

One: Hear the good news!

If we confess our sin, God is faithful and just, forgiving and

transforming our lives.

Friends, believe the good news.

All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

FIRST LESSON EXODUS 1:8–14

ANTHEM Long Since in Egypt's Plenteous Land CHH PARRY The Covenant Choir

Long since in Egypt’s plenteous land, our fathers were oppressed, but God, whose

chosen folk they were, smote those who long enslaved them there, and all their woes

redressed.

The Red Sea stayed them not at all, nor depths of liquid green; on either hand a mighty

wall of waters clear rose high at his call, and they passed through between.

In deserts wild they wandered long, they sinned, and went astray; but yet his arm to

help was strong, he pardoned them though they did wrong, and brought them on their

way.

At last to this good land they came, with fruitful plenty blest; here glorious men know

endless fame, here God made holy Zion’s name, and here he gave them rest.

Oh, may we ne’er forget what he hath done, nor prove unmindful of his love, that, like

the constant sun, on Israel hath shone, and sent down blessings from above.

WE WELCOME ALL WHO HAVE COME TO WORSHIP at the Church of the Covenant. If you are

ALL BULLETINS ARE NOW LARGE PRINT. Large-print copies of the hymns and hearing

assistance devices are available from the ushers. Sermon videos and print copies of the

sermons are available at CovenantWeb.org. Print copies are also in the kiosks.

CORE STORIES OF THE BIBLE SERIES CONTINUE TODAY. This fall we welcome students of all

ages to join us in a lively examination of the core stories of the Christian faith. The Bible is

a huge book, full of many wonderful (and often confusing) stories. Weekly through

November 1, in worship at 10am, children's Sunday school at 10:15, adult education at

11:30, and at Tuesday Noon Bible study in the library, we will explore eight major themes

and what each has to teach us on our modern-day journeys of faith: God's call, the exodus,

the Sinai covenant, the promised land, Davidic rule, Jesus' life, the cross, and the

resurrection.

MUSIC NOTES: Today's choral anthems reflect the theme of journey connected with the

sermon series on Core Stories. The British composer Charles Hubert Hastings Parry (1848-

1918) composed the anthem, Long Since in Egypt's Plenteous Land, originally as an alto aria

in the oratorio Judith in 1888 (based on the deutercanonical book Judith). The character

Meshullemeth retells the story of the Israelite's Exodus from Egypt to a group of children.

The aria is mostly presented in choral form (as we hear today) as well as in the hymn, Dear

Lord and Father of Mankind. It is well documented that 19th century African-American

slaves felt a strong connection between their affliction and that of the Israelites in Egypt.

This empathy was reflected in many spirituals such as today's offertory Keep Your Lamps

(arr. by André Thomas), a journey song of the underground railroad. Two 18th century

organ works bookend our service: J.S. Bach's homage to the French style in his Piéce

d'orgue and the Fugue in e by his contemporary Johann Heinrich Buttstett (1666-1727).

OUR LAY WORSHIP LEADER is Nancy Smekal, who, with her husband, James, joined the

church in 1979 and their son, Seth was baptized here. Over the years, career opportunities

took them to various cities until they were finally able to return to Cleveland in 2013.

During many of these years, they listened fondly to the Covenant’s streaming Christmas

eve broadcast on the radio! Most recently both Nancy and James were elders in the First

Presbyterian Church of Medford, Oregon. If you would like to become a lay worship leader,

please contact Gale Bromelmeier at 440-944-7480 or at [email protected].

SUNDAY SCHOOL AND THE CHILDREN’S CHOIR/HANDBELLS meet today. The Crèche for

infants and children through pre-kindergarten age is open from 9:30 am to 12:30pm.

families and Kaori Hongo at [email protected] about the children’s choir.

THE FLOWERS IN THE CHANCEL URN are given to the glory of God.

USHERS TODAY are John Bromelmeier, Ted Adams, Bob Ault, Bob Jefferis, and Paul

Williams. Greeters are David and Stephanie Finkenthal.

STEPHEN MINISTERS are church members trained to support individuals who are facing

difficulties and would like a caring Christian presence during this struggle. You are
