We are delighted to introduce you to our ‘new-look’ Newsletter. As we mentioned in our last issue we will now be writing to you 4 times a year to keep you up to date with stories from our hospices that show the impact your support is having everyday, as well as our great supporter activities and ways for you to get involved throughout the year.

With Little Harbour now open, some of our Plymouth and Cornwall families have chosen to transfer to make their journey to receive our care that bit easier. All our hospices offer facilities to help make the most of short and precious lives: see pages 6, 9 and 10 for some stories from our hospices.”

Emma Lloyd - Head of Fundraising at Little Harbour “2011 was an incredible year for Cornwall and Plymouth as the Precious Lives Appeal reached its 5 million target and Little Harbour opened its doors to families in early December. The fundraising is still going strong as we focus on raising funds for running costs of Little Harbour. Pages 3, 4 and 5 are full of simple ideas to support our special cause - why not join our Lottery? You could be a winner!”

We appreciate that not everyone who would like to support us has the time to get involved in an event, but there are still many ways you can help which are quick and easy but make a lasting difference. The sibling support teams at CHSW provide numerous trips and activities for all ages. Last summer 16 teenage siblings enjoyed an adventurous weekend of outbound activities in North Devon. “I had a really good weekend; the challenges were fun and made us push ourselves.”

Remembering BethanyAmelia Chinnock Schuman stayed at Little Bridge House with her sister Bethany and parents. Bethany was just 11 when she died. For Amelia coming back to visit at Little Bridge House is really important.

Amelia also decided to raise some money for Little Bridge House with a fancy dress papier mache dragon race at her school, raising £50.53!

“Me and my Mum and Dad came back this year for the Carol concert and I played Jingle Bells on the piano. I am

so happy to be back here, I wouldn’t be sane if I couldn’t come back here. I love

meeting all the children and making friends with people who understand.”

Thank youWe’d like to say a huge thank you to Philip Mackie and his wife Lenka. The Mackie family used LBH with their son Nicholas who died in 2010. They have been raising funds for many years. Recently they presented members of our care team with a cheque for £2,500, an amount that was pledged from the Devon and Cornwall branch of The Red Cross of Constantine.

Calling all music loversThe inimitable blues singer Elkie Brookes will be performing a concert at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple on Saturday 16th June to raise money for CHSW. There are still a few tickets left so be sure to contact the Box Office and book yours while you still can! 01271 324242.

Two Daves, one challenge of a lifetimeDave Chowings and his brother-in-law Dave Leach together cycled 327 miles in just 4 days raising £1900 to celebrate Dave C’s 60th birthday. The cycle challenge took them along East Devon’s Jurassic Coast and over Exmoor to North Devon where they made a stop off at Little Bridge House for tea, cake and a chat with the staff and families.

Well done Beccs and JadeDevon students Rebecca Turner and Jade Holmes shared an interesting summer walking the length of the UK from John O’Groats to Lands End. Whilst studying together at university the girls planned their route and in the holidays set off on an adventure of a lifetime! Jade and Beccs completed the challenge in 80 days with big smiles, sore feet, a great sense of achievement and £2,129.23 raised!

Little Bridge House fundraising

An overwhelming successLast October Torbay, Newton Abbot & District Friends Groups hosted a beautiful Dragonfly Ball to commemorate their 20 years of local fundraising for CHSW. Everyone agreed it was a memorable evening and proved that, as with the life of a Dragonfly - it’s all about living life to the fullest! Guests were moved as Eddie Farwell spoke candidly about the charity and were captivated to hear Steve Laister perform. Unusual auction lots had partygoers reaching for their wallets - boosting the total raised to £20,000. Well done to the organisers and congratulations to the Friends Group - here’s to another twenty years!

What a magnificent effortThank you to everyone who sponsored our corporate partnerships fundraiser David Butt and the magnificent seven team to cycle the 300 plus miles from Charlton Farm to Little Harbour on an unusual mode of transport - a 7 seater bike!

We are delighted to report the 7 completed the journey safely raising a magnificent £10,077.70. All agreed next time they will stick to 2 wheels instead of 7!

Smiles all round at the East Portlemouth Church FeteProud, happy faces were in abundance at the summer fete when young visitors to the CHSW stall got to make smiley hats and have their faces painted.

A very generous donation of £1,000 was given as part of the profits made on the day. A wonderful, smiley family day was had by all!

The children and families we care for face many challenges every single day.

When a child is referred and accepted for our care they are not expected to survive into adulthood. There are occasions, although sadly these are rare, where a child’s condition can alter course from the original prognosis and the child may return to a healthier condition than expected. This happy turn of events was the case for Ryan and his family who used Little Bridge House. The care team describe Ryan as ready to take on any challenge.

“My first four and half years working at Little Bridge House were the last few that Ryan visited us - as his condition continued to improve we had to say goodbye!This was an emotional time for both him and his family but also for the team who had known him throughout the many years of respite stays at Little Bridge House.I enjoyed the times I spent with Ryan and will treasure those memories for always, so although Ryan will not be visiting Little Bridge House again, he will always be remembered in our hearts.”Tracey, care team leader Did you know? 3157

Challenges in loving memoryJack Mylam’s family have undertaken sporting challenges to commemorate his short but inspirational life. His brother, Gloucester Rugby player Darren Dawidiuk regularly uses the memory of the brave boy who inspired so many as his inspiration on the rugby pitch. Samantha Wearne, Jack’s mum, achieved a sponsored skydive in Jack’s memory and raised a soaring £3,177 saying it was the most incredible, exhilarating experience ever! A huge thank-you to KianOne of our youngest supporters, 8 year old Kian Radford, took to the waters of Newquay as part of the Joe Way Paddle for Life event. Kian heard Joe’s story and realising how lucky he was, decided to do something to help others. A huge thank you for being such a caring young man and raising over £300.

Ladies that lunchLadies of Liskeard were treated to a Pamper Lunch which left them all feeling revived and refreshed. A very generous local resident provided the venue for the lunch and the Friends Group members - including some gentlemen - enjoyed the first of many similar events. New friends were made and a striking £800 was raised!

Harbour to HarbourLocal authors David and Jan Penprase captured the essence of Porthleven in a book entitled Harbour to Harbour. Depicting images of the whole community, one hundred copies of the hard back book sold out in three days and one thousand soft backs in just over three weeks resulting in a masterpiece of £20,000 raised for the charity!

Louise’s family storyLouise and her son Curtis from Truro were one of the first families to use Little Harbour. They have chosen to transfer from Little Bridge House as the journey from their home to Little Harbour is much shorter for the family, meaning that they can really get the most out of their respite stays.

Our first family visit

One of Curtis’s favourite pastimes at Little Bridge House was the Jacuzzi. On his first visit to Little Harbour he knew right where he was headed!

“As soon as we arrived Curtis was trying to take his T-shirt off, bless him. Unfortunately we hadn’t brought his swimming kit that day, but luckily there were plenty of other fun things to distract him with.”

“For some families who are transferring, many are leaving behind firm friendships and trusted relationships with their care contacts. Our aim is to make the transition as easy as possible and we know the roots of new relationships at Little Harbour will be firmly set as soon as the families are welcomed through the doors.”

Champagne and Cornish pastiesChampagne and Cornish pasties were waiting for 6 men who completed the iconic bike ride from John O’ Groats to Lands End - 920 miles - in 8 1/2 days. The men from Liskeard and District named themselves ‘The fatties on bikes’ after admitting they were more suited to playing rugby than cycling. The ‘peddlers’ experienced a few falls and near misses but no major injuries. Most returned to work preferring to stand rather than sit. We think they deserved a sit down as their sponsorship raised £6,465.

Building futures togetherSouth West Women in Construction is the collective name for an organisation of women with one thing in common: construction! This group has supported CHSW as their charity of the year since 2009. In 2011 through a series of events that included an annual quiz, and auction of promises they raised £1,900. Well done and thank you to all members for helping us make a difference.

Award winning company interact with CHSWPlymouth-based Pipex px® has always interacted with the local community, and has an ongoing policy of donating a % of profits to charities every year. In 2011 we were delighted to receive a £10,000 donation when Pipex px® staff came to visit Little Harbour on one of our recent tour days. This is the fourth year that Pipex px® have supported CHSW and we are extremely grateful for their continued support.

Family life at Charlton Farm

We always visit Charlton Farm as a family. Arno, who is 10, gains so much from meeting other siblings in the same position. He has an incredible amount of empathy for his age because he has met so many children with special needs and has learnt that everyone is precious.Our visits are also really important for Calli, aged 4 as it gives her the opportunity to play on her own terms. We have really noticed how she has gained in confidence from meeting a range of other people at Charlton Farm.It’s the little things that make the difference. Just being offered a cup of tea is lovely.”

Frances shares her family story“When Anja was a baby at first everything appeared to be fine, then when she was six months old I noticed she wasn’t sitting up yet. She then began to miss various milestones. Anja does not have a diagnosis but there are genetic complications which will be life-limiting.

Although Anja cannot walk or talk, she does learn new skills, has a healthy appetite and smiles a lot, especially in the sensory room. She really is unique.

For every family who is referred to us they have a different story to tell. Sadly the similarity between them all is the knowledge that their child will die before adulthood.

Knitters flock to back budgie fund-raiserA flock of hand-knitted and crocheted budgies is making guest appearances around the country, all in aid of CHSW. The flock began as therapy for Andrew Price’s injured wrist, when medics suggested that crocheting would speed his recovery. Andrew, from Bristol, is now inviting people to buy a budgie- making kit and let their creations join a flock. Members of the flock have already been photographed at the summit of Mont Blanc, at the Brazilian Grand Prix and in a vineyard in France. Bert, the original, is often seen flying at 3,000 feet with Andrew on his paraglider.

A record number of bikers swap leather for Santa suitsOver 300 motorbike enthusiasts dressed in full Santa costume travelled from locations across the South West, and rode in convoy to Charlton Farm. The event, organised by Will Brown

from Bradley Stoke, attracted record numbers of bikers and raised £10,000.

Mark Regan’s mountainous challengeRugby star Mark Regan recently visited Charlton Farm to present a cheque for £25,000 which he raised in sponsorship for his mountainous challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro during last summer. Mark described his gruelling eight-day trek as being ‘tougher than any rugby international I’ve played in’.

In memory of ConnorEllis, Ross and Robin, accompanied by Ellis’s dad dressed up as Smurfs, complete with blue faces, hopped on their bikes and cycled from Trowbridge to Bristol. Ellis says they wanted to raise money for the charity to say thank you for helping care for his friend Connor. Ellis’s kindness raised £300!

Generous musicians ‘Bring Down The House’ for CHSWModern Jive class ‘Portishead LeRoc’ raised £1,100 through a dance night starring the energetic and talented 14-piece band ‘Bring Down The House’. Class teacher and dance organiser Heather Parsons said, “It was an amazing night, the band was brilliant and the dance floor was busy until 1am! It was great to raise so much money for CHSW”. The band generously gave up their time for this annual event and have helped Portishead LeRoc and their supporters to raise over £6,862 over the past four years.

107 mile ‘Tour de Farce’ cycle challengeBristol-based company Graphic Packaging raised over £5,000 through their second cycle challenge, Tour de Farce, a 107 mile 2 day cycle around Bristol. 42 cyclists, made up of Graphic Packaging staff and their clients, completed the scenic route which took them around Chew Valley Lakes, Cheddar Gorge, Brean, Weston super Mare beach front before ending on the Bristol to Bath cycle path along the River Avon.

Pieminister help raise a smile for bereaved siblingsAward winning Bristol company, Pieminister recently hosted a get together for bereaved teenage siblings. Hannah (17) and Gemma (13) joined sibling workers at Pieminister’s Stoke’s Croft café for an evening of catching up and delicious pies followed by a trip to the cinema. For the teenagers, whose brothers died at Charlton Farm, the evening was an opportunity to talk to someone with similar experiences. Hannah described Charlton Farm as holding ‘many happy memories and feelings, just like a happy home’.

The first StarMums weekend was recently held at Charlton Farm. Twelve bereaved mums stayed at Charlton Farm’s farmhouse for a weekend filled with chat, laughter and tears.

The weekend certainly started with a bang as The Downs School kindly invited the group to their firework display. After watching the school’s display the Mums returned to the farmhouse to let off some lanterns in the car park with members of the care team.

Being quite a windy evening the lanterns didn’t quite go as they had hoped; almost floating into a nearby tree. Luckily no harm was done and everyone had a good laugh at the thought of their children being together looking down at their mums crying and laughing in the pitch black car park! The care team served the group with a reviving breakfast of bacon sandwiches and tea in the morning before they returned home.

CHSW is Charity of the Year for Plymouth half and Bristol half

BRISTOL HALF MARATHONCHSW are delighted to have been chosen by Run Bristol as the local charity partner for the Bristol Half Marathon 2012 and 2013. We have up to 200 charity gold bond places available in the half marathon for our runners, or if you have your own place you can choose to fundraise for us. If running isn’t your thing, we are looking for volunteer race marshals or you could join one of our cheer points, and support the runners as they run the fantastic historical route around Bristol.

PLYMOUTH HALF MARATHONWe are delighted to have been chosen by Plymouth Half Marathon as their local charity of the year. This is particularly poignant as we welcome our newest families through the doors at Little Harbour for the life-limited children and their families of Plymouth and Cornwall. June 2012 marks the 18th year of the Plymouth Half Marathon - why not join team CHSW and help us make a difference to the families who use our special services? With eleven weeks left to train there’s just enough time to enter the race so what are you waiting for?

Big Bike RideBanger’sSomerset County Cricket Club captain Marcus Trescothick was delighted to raise £37,000 from Banger’s Big Bike Ride in September 2011 - a 300 mile, five day ride.Marcus said “Visiting the three hospices was very humbling and I have nothing but admiration for everyone involved with CHSW. They do such a fantastic job to look after the children and families who need them at such a difficult time and they really do make a real difference..” Our thanks go to the many businesses and individuals who supported the event. Especially Clydesdale Bank who generously sponsored the event. Marcus has now announced that he plans to take on a 400 mile ride in September 2012!

Inheritance Tax update The inheritance tax threshold is the amount up to which an estate will have no inheritance tax to pay. Currently, this threshold is set at £325,000 with inheritance tax payable at 40% on any amount over.The Legacy10 campaign, announced in the last budget and effective from 6th April 2012,will mean that anyone leaving 10% or more of their estate to charity in their Will can reduce the inheritance tax due against their estate from 40% to 36%.For further information and advice about inheritance tax planning speak to your solicitor or tax advisor.

Joining the CHSW lottery is a really simple way to support us. Debbie from Bodmin was one of the weekly £1,000 winners in January 2011.

“I was shopping in St Austell with my son Connor and we stopped to talk to the charity volunteer in Homebase promoting the Children’s Hospice South West lottery. We explained to my little boy why some people need Little Harbour, and that it helps families whose children are very poorly and gives them a place they can stay together and have support and care close to home and family. My young son and I agreed that it would be a very good cause to support and I signed up for a two ticket monthly subscription costing just under £10 a month. Like many people at the moment, as much as I would have loved to I wouldn’t have been able to donate £100 to CHSW as a one off sum, but

by joining the lottery, I am making this donation spread over a year and supporting a vital resource in our local area. It was a huge surprise to open

my post and discover I’d won the £1000!
