Students Visit Missouri Capital!

On Tuesday, February 17, nine students travelled to Jefferson City, Missouri, to participate in a Capitol Tour (led by Cottey alumna Megan Duffy ’07) and meet with women legislators during the Inaugural Reception honoring the Women Legislators of the 2015 Missouri General Assembly hosted by the Women’s Foundation of

Greater Kansas City. The students were:

Emily Cortes Caroline Guerin Haley Guerin

Cecelia Rose-Mackey Beatrice Urrutia Kelsey McCauley

Ashlyn Swait Abbey Johnson Hailey Johnson

The event was also attended by Cottey alumnae Karel Lowery ’75 and Jennifer Lewis ’91, who enjoyed the opportunity to interact with women leaders and current students. This effort was part of the Cottey’s Going Places initiative and was led by Dr. Carol Clyde. Of her experience, student Caroline Guerin said this:

“You could feel the power breathing through the marble walls. The legislators’ office doors were open and welcoming. After our tour, we attended the Women’s Foundation event. Between voting, representatives

hurried in to welcome us to the Capital. We made sure to ask the question to the women legislatures, “What is the most difficult part of your job?” ... The Representatives, Senators, and occasional Chief of Staff were enthralled by our intelligence and leadership experience. As the party wound down we were whisked

away to be introduced on the floor of the Senate by Senator David Pearce. When the floor yielded to the fine gentleman of the 21st district we all stood with excitement and pride in our personal developments

in leadership. Dr. Clyde provided us with a fantastic experience. Visiting Jefferson City and Missouri’s state capital with my strong fellow classmates was one of the best days I have had at Cottey.”

On Saturday, February 14, Rev. Erica Sigauke led a group of eleven students on a trip to a Jewish temple, where they were able to participate in a Sabbath service. Following the service, the community met for social time while having lunch and that gave a chance for our students to mingle with some of the Jewish worshipers, and learn more about cultural beliefs, Jewish laws, and values. Students on the trip included Erica Pezant, Emily Cortes, Cecelia Rose-Mackey, Kristina Hutchinson, Jessica Starkey, Shalani Gentry, Christina Litherland, Wing Sum Ho, Tatenda Ndambakuwa, Fatu Jambawai, and Belinda Kemetse. The whole experience was very enriching.

On Wednesday, February 11, Ms. Renee Hampton, interim coordinator for career and transfer planning/community liaison, and Rev. Erica Sigauke, director of spiritual life and campus diversity, led seven students to attend an overnight trip to the Kansas University Career Fair in Lawrence, Kansas. This was a great opportunity for the students seeking full-time jobs and summer internships to explore career opportunities within different companies, and a variety of industries. For several hours, the students interacted with business professionals, and experienced a great way to learn about job openings, research companies, and practice their interviewing and networking skills. That evening, the students and their supervisors dined at the Mad Greek, an Italian and Greek restaurant located in downtown Lawrence, before heading back to the hotel where they enjoyed a relaxing night in the hot tub. The next day, a few students returned to the KU campus in order to conduct an informational meeting regarding a possible internship opportunity for the summer. According to the students, they enjoyed the overall experience, and thought it to be very beneficial. Students in attendance were Heven Beyene, Marisa Guerrero, Chaymaa Bakhalek, Johanna Gonzalez-Virgen, Lorraine Chihora, Paige Ott, and Natalia Garrido-Recalde.
