“I was like Cinderella, doing all the dirty work,
cleaning the house, cooking, taking care of my neph-
ews and nieces while I was very tired. I cried before
I went to sleep. But I always prayed that someday I
would be happy. I have never lost faith in God”.
Daytime he worked as an electronic technician. At
night he went to school.
At age 22, his turning point came. He met Ruth, hi
future wife at a church. A medical student, Ruth had
a car and paid for meals while on dates. “I didn’t
even have a bicycle”, Diaz said.
The pair got married two years after and migrated to
the US. She pursued a medical career.
They raised three children while Dr. Ruth Diaz
worked for the state of Michigan as a psychiatrist.
Later she went into private practice. Her husband
managed her medical business.
At home, the family clung to its Asian and Christian
values such as respecting the elders.

interest of my wife and out children. Whatever
makes them happy, that's important to me”. Our chil-(Continued on page 11)
DYN—Did You Know... By JUDY SORIO JEFFERS
… the Filipino Association manned a conces-
sion stand Sept. 26-28, 2008 during the Kansas
Speedway NASCAR race
… over the 3 days, 53 volunteers worked the
large concession stand, a break out concession
stand and 6 portable sale booths.
… this single activity earned $6,461.30, the
equivalent to 2-3 months of the association’s operat-
ing expenses
… the Filipino Association’s hard work continues to
be recognized by Americrown Event Service. Dur-
ing one of the routine walkthroughs, the inspector
commented, “This is a well oiled machine.” refer-
ring to how organized, clean, and productive our
group was in comparison to the other groups.
… the Filipino Association also manned a conces-
sion stand April 25, 26, 27, 2008 during the Kansas
Speedway IRL race.
… although a much smaller event, the association
earned $3,454.27.
THANK YOU FOR THE HARD WORK!
FA-GKC hosts the SOLT Golden Jubilee celebration By CORY SORIO
As part of the 50th celebration of the founding of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity
(SOLT), a mass of remembrance for Fr. Thomas Gier was held at the Filipino Cultural Center on No-
vember 6, 2008.
Father James Flanagan, SOLT Founder, about 10 priests,
religious sisters from Texas and Kansas City, lay
members, and members of the FAGKC attended the
celebration. The Sampaguita choir, led by director, Jose
Bayani, provided the music. A potluck reception of
Filipino and American food followed.
Father Thomas Gier was a missionary for the most of his
51 years of priesthood in the Philippines and Papua New
Guinea from 1979 until 2005. He was instrumental in the
ordination of nearly 70 Filipino men to the priesthood.
The SOLTS are part of a Society of Apostolic life
comprised of priests, brothers, deacons, sisters, con-
secrated widows, and single and married laity serving
together in areas of deepest apostolic need.
Their spirituality is based on the graced relationship that
flow from the Triune God and the Blessed Mother to all
of mankind.
Today, SOLT serves in Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, Mexico,
the Philippines, Thailand, Italy, England and the United
States.
The Winter Blues…or might it be
SAD?
By CORY SORIO
Does the sight of falling leaves and
bare trees make you sad? Do the
short days and long nights bring on
the doldrums? Does winter bring gloom and boredom
rather than delight? You are not alone.
As fall turns to winter, many of us feel gloomy, have diffi-
culty getting out of bed, and don’t seem to have the energy
or motivation to do much of anything. It could be mild as
in “winter blues” or severe enough to affect quality of life
as in “Seasonal Affective Disorder” (SAD).
About half a million Americans are estimated to suffer
from classic SAD, and another 10 to 20 percent may have
the mild form. It is more common in women than in men,
with the average age of onset between 18 and 30 years of
age.
SAD is rare, if existent at all in the tropics, and becomes
more common the farther north one lives.
SAD is seasonal. The symptoms usually begin in late fall
or early winter, intensify during the winter months, and
subside in the spring and summer. A diagnosis of SAD can
be made if the following symptoms occur for at least 2 con-
secutive winters.
Depression: misery, guilt, loss of self-esteem, hope-
lessness, despair and apathy
Extremes of mood, and sometimes, periods of mania in
spring and summer
Desire to oversleep and difficulty staying awake
Fatigue and inability to carry out normal routine
Craving for starchy and sweet food, weight gain
Irritability and desire to avoid social contact
Loss of libido, decreased interest in physical contact
.
Some theories of the cause of SAD include the following:
Reduced level of sunlight
Increased production of Melatonin, a sleep hormone
Decreased level of serotonin, a natural mood elevator
If you have some of the symptoms of SAD, seek help
sooner than later. This is particularly important if you no-
tice changes in your sleep patterns and appetite, and espe-
cially if you feel hopeless, think about suicide, or find

Association...
TUMANUT: "the inherent culture of the Filipi-

Banos and was a UP graduate and professor with a PhD in Math
and Statistics. He is retired from Chiquita Banana where he was a

rectors had their last quarterly meeting on October 25, 2008 at the

2 excused absences.
For the record, the Board expressed their appreciation for the
leadership and strong effort of Lisa Hopkins and Mayie Vilkins
for chairing the very, very successful 2008 September Affair
Gala that netted 20K, and the husband and wife team of Paul and
Mirla de los Santos, coordinators of the NASCAR concession
fund raising. Their strong commitment made it possible for the
association’s financial status very solvent. What a financial ac-

Filipinettes’ performance at Dr. Lotuaco’s party. The Filipinettes
have a strong support from their parents. There is a waning inter-

schoolwork and job. Lillian wants to give them more incentive by
planning another performance next year, but on a smaller venue,
i.e. JOCO, etc.

yourself turning to alcohol for comfort or relaxation. Treatment consists of the following:
1. Light therapy – Regular exposure to bright, particularly fluorescent light, twice a day have shown
significant improvement in people with SAD. Retirees, take note… moving to a climate characterized by
bright light is very effective. (Can we use our winter trips to the Philippines as a medical deduction?) 2. Dawn Simulators – Use of light that is timed to come on gradually over a period of 30 minutes to 2
hours, mimicking a natural dawn. It helps one wake up easily at the simulated sunrise. 3. Medications – Antidepressant or other psychiatric medications may be needed, especially if the
symptoms are severe. 4. Psychotherapy- This helps with the management of negative thoughts and behaviors that contribute
to the symptoms.
In addition to treatments from your health care provider, here are some ways to help you cope with
SAD:
Make your home sunnier and brighter. Open blinds, add skylights, and arrange your home or work-
place to receive more sunlight.
Take a walk during sunny days, eat lunch at a park, sit on a bench and soak up the sun. One study
showed that an hour’s walk in winter sunlight was as effective as two and a half hours under
artificial light. This can also reverse the feeling of confinement and isolation of cabin fever.
Relieve stress and anxiety through regular exercise. Being fit makes you feel better about yourself
too.
Take care of yourself. Eat a balanced diet, get enough rest, take time to relax and enjoy pleasurable
activities.
Socialize. Be with people you enjoy being around.
Approach the winter season with a positive attitude. Remember, the winter solstice on or about Dec.
21, at the very moment when we mark the beginning of winter, is also the moment of the sun’s
return, the turning of the wintry tide. So if winter is here, can spring be far behind?

dren (now grown and away) knew that I may have
the last work, but that’s good for them.”
Once a week, they held a family meeting and devo-
tions with children bringing home their frustrations
and excitement from school.
The oldest, Ian Diaz, 32, was 6 months old when
the family came to the US, now serves as a medical
director in Gaylord. Nicola, 29 is a computer anima-
tion specialist now working in Japan. Ruth Marlo, 27 is
finishing her master’s program in business administra-
tion at Regent University in Virginia.
“Their rooms are still intact with posters on the walls.
When the come home, they sit on my lap,” Diaz aid.
Jerri Johnson, a neighbor of 15 years remembers the
Diaz kids as very, very smart, very well behaved with
very strong Christian values.
When the Johnsons (David & Jerri's husband is a mathe-
matics professor at Eastern Michigan University and a
member of the Milan Board of Education) were moving
into their current home 15 years ago. Owen Diaz came
over and said” We’re having a party today, why don’t
you guys come over?”
Said Johnson, who worked on Diaz’ campaign. “He is
genuine. He’s a man with absolutely the highest integ-
rity you can find. He truly believes that making peo-
ple’s lives better in general is his goal. I am sure that he
can. He has a good business mind and I think he will do
well as mayor’”
Since his election he has been busy meeting with city
administrators, business people and community leaders.
Diaz said his budding political career is the third phase
of his life – following his orphaned childhood and build-
ing a new life in the US.
He knows there is lingering skepticism about his un-
proven political savvy and he’s willing to give back
what this country has given him.
“This is the land of opportunity and justice. It’s not
perfect but this is the best country in the world. I was an
orphan in the Philippines. I came here with nothing.
Who would have thought I could be mayor?”
