Christmas Concert 2016

Thursday 8 December 2016 7.30pmSouthwark Cathedral

www.jags.org.uk

INTRODUCTION

We are glad to return to our diocesan church, Southwark Cathedral, for our annual Christmas Concert. Tonight’s programme is underpinned by Christmas music with carols arrangements both sung and played. Bach’s Magnificat is possibly one of the most all-encompassing yet compact Christmas masterpieces in the choral repertory and we have extracted much fulfilment in preparing for this performance. This evening we are delighted to be joined by professional soloists David Allsopp, Paul Tindall and Stephen Charlesworth.

Over one sixth of the school is performing in tonight’s concert – a remarkable statistic and one that reflects the love, enthusiasm and huge gift that JAGS girls have for music. We are also delighted to welcome JAGS Choral Society who have worked tirelessly in preparation for tonight’s concert. Of the musicians, I would like to extend particular credit and gratitude to the Chamber Orchestra which has worked so hard all term and which musically supports much of the music in tonight’s programme. We conclude the concert with two Christmas classics; we actively encourage you to stand up for the last verse of O come all ye faithful, but feel free to sit down for Twelve Days of Christmas, so that you can all see the conductor who will direct you!

We would like to thank the Dean and the staff at the Cathedral for playing host to JAGS again. We are most grateful to the staff acting as stewards today as well as to the schoolkeepers for transporting our equipment today. It really is a community effort and everyone’s contribution counts.

This evening’s soloists:

DavidAllsopp(countertenor) read computer science at King’s College, Cambridge in the spare time between Chapel services. He sang in Westminster Cathedral Choir until 2008 before pursuing a solo and consort career in the UK as well as throughout Europe. He made his solo debut at the BBC Proms in 2010 in Arvo Pärt’s Passio. David is known internationally for his Adonai in Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms; we were most fortunate to have him sing it with JAGS Choral Society in 2014.

Paul Tindall (tenor) studied at the Guildhall School of Music and at King’s College, London. He has sung as a soloist at Sydney Opera House, Avery Fisher Hall (NYC) and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as having made more than a hundred recordings with the Monteverdi Choir, He was also a member of the close-harmony group The Light Blues, with which he toured the world. Recently, Paul has performed in the first performance of Britten’s Peter Grimes to be held in China.

StephenCharlesworth(bass) known by all his friends as Larry, attended the Royal College of Music. Since 1988 has been a member of the country’s only full-time chamber choir, the BBC Singers. He has a particular interest in early music, regularly singing with The Tallis Scholars, Gothic Voices, Monteverdi Choir, Taverner Choir and Consort, The Sixteen and the Gabrieli Consort. In a previous century he also used to sing with tonight’s tenor soloist in a vocal sextet called The Light Blues.

In 606 a Convent was established on the south bank of the River Thames at the place from which the ferry used to cross over to the City of London. In 1106 an Augustinian Priory was established. Following the Reformation, the Priory Church became a Parish Church. A parish school – now Cathedral School – was opened in 1704 following on the work already established in schools founded from the parish under a charter from Queen Elizabeth I. Today in old and new buildings, this Cathedral continues to serve the people of its parish and the people of the diocese, to be a centre of teaching, of worship, prayer and pilgrimage; a place of inclusive welcome for all people. We therefore welcome you to this holy place which is both ancient and modern. Together we continue to serve the people of this area - those who are passing through, crossing the river, making a new home, coming to work or simply here to enjoy themselves - and the people who live here, in much the same way as our forebears did and with all those who have gone before us we do it all from a place of praise and worship of Almighty God.
