The Advantages of the new galvanic grid technology

Based on the nature and flexibility of the process the newgrids provide the following competitive advantages:

Lower weight. The process permits to produce any gridthickness specified between about 0.1 and 2 mm

Freedom of grid design. The grids can be fully currentoptimized without any limitation by the requirements of the production process. This permits also to choosespecial grid structures such as designs to reduce plateresistance and grid growth

Higher corrosion resistance. The major alloying ele-ment is Sn. No Sb or Ca are used. Therefore, the generalcorrosion rate is essentially that of binary Pb-Sn.Moreover, due to the particular microstructure of the electrodeposited grid, the corrosion attack is essentiallyuniform. No deep grain boundary cracks are formed.Therefore, grid integrity lasts longer

Improved adherence of active material to increasecycle life. The process permits to apply in-line a finalcoating which improves chemical bonding. Moreover, theprocess conditions can be adjusted to produce a control-led surface roughness in the range of about Ra = 3 µm to about Ra = 50 µm. Both measures improve the adhe-rence of the positive active material thus reducing premature capacity loss

The process technology can combine grid makingwith recycling of grid scrap. This conforms with elec-trochemical refining technology and reduces raw materialcost significantly

DSL Dresden is introducing a new patented process for thecontinuous production of grids in strip form for lead-acidbatteries by electroforming. The grids are characterized by

The New Grids

The new grids have an improved chemical surface composi-tion and microstructure compared to the grid alloys of mostconventional book mould cast, expanded or stamped grids.The micrograph below shows a typical cross section of agrid wire. The grids are a composite material. The core maybe made of a dispersion strengthened Pb alloy. The outerlayer may be made of a corrosion resistant Pb-Sn alloy.

New Technology of Grid Making and Coating

Our new electroforming process to make lead grids forautomotive and industrial batteries is shown schemati-cally below. Lead is deposited by galvanic deposition ona slowly revolving, pre-structured cylinder (mandrel) fromwhich it is stripped and pulled continuously through a

succession of strip galvanizing bathsand plated to its final thickness.

The product is grid strip coiled on a drum from which itand can be fed directly into an existing pasting lines byDSL Dresden.

The technology of grid coating consists of a galvanic deposition process for grid strip. Composition and thick-ness of the coating can be varied according to specifica-tion. Coil to coil or in-line operation is possible.
