historial romance: Carolyn Miller

Love and Science

The Regency romance author outlines the challenges of writing a love story set against the fossil-hunting mania of 1800s England.

A longtime fan of Regency romance, Carolyn Miller pens witty and fun novels that deal with such issues as forgiveness and actual love versus “true love.” Her latest novel is A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh (Kregel Publications), the first book in her new series Regency Brides: Daughters of Aynsley.

In this interview, Carolyn shares how all the elements of science and crime came to be included in her new Regency romance; explains what makes her latest leading lady and man special; and reveals whether she took liberties with the historical record.

Carolyn, your new Regency romance is A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh. The novel includes history, romance, scandal, smugglers, and questions raised about faith in a world increasingly ruled by science. What inspired you to put all these elements together?I’ve always been fascinated by the story of Mary Anning, a poor, poorly educated, early 19th century fossil hunter, of whom it’s reputed the tongue twister “she sells sea shells by the sea shore” is based on. In spite of Miss Anning’s humble beginnings, she was eventually accorded great respect for her discovery of the first ichthyosaur skeleton in 1811, the first plesiosaur skeletons ever found, and her discoveries of a pterosaur skeleton and fish fossils.

Yet despite her achievements, as a woman she was not admitted to join the Geological Society of London and did

not always receive proper credit for her discoveries. But I didn’t want to write her story; Tracy Chevalier has already done that in the excellent Remarkable Creatures.

So, I wanted to reference her and something of the fossil-hunting mania of early 1800s England, while asking how a science-minded, Bible-believing man would feel about some of these new discoveries. It was nice to weave some of these elements into a story set in England’s south coast—which of course lends itself to hints of smugglers as well! And with two sons who have loved dinosaurs, it was fun to write a story that might appeal to them.

Tell us about Caroline Hatherleigh and Gideon Kirby. What about these two made you want to build a story around them?Gideon Kirby is a man struggling to balance his faith with his science, which is something I don’t think we’ve seen a lot of in Christian fiction, so I felt his story would be an interesting one. I love his protective commitment to his sister, and thought toying with the idea of “love at first sight” would humanize his tendency to logic and reason and add further challenge to his personal goals.

As the daughter of the very rich Lord Aynsley, the very proper Caroline Hatherleigh has been brought up to expect to marry for social connections, and ascribes to her mother’s notion that romantic love is beneath her. Meeting Gideon challenges these preconceptions and her prideful self-assurance, as she real-izes what she really needs is that which her parents have long denied as important.

I like how these two very individual characters are brought together by Gideon’s sister, a relationship that’s further cemented by near tragedy.

Which character (or characters) surprised you the most as the story unfolded?Gideon’s sister, Emma Kirby, possesses an interesting backstory that leads to more than a few secrets. Her medical condition (an autoimmune disease not unlike lupus) adds to her challenges and would have been hard to diagnose, let alone treat with Regency-era medical knowledge.

I hope to “write real” and I believe her response to these difficulties reflects some of the turmoil believers can face with uncertainty. I think she (and Gideon’s Irish friend) prove excellent foils to the drama faced by Caroline and Gideon.

There are a lot of details in this novel—including historical as well as scientific details. What kind of research did you need to do for this novel?I spent a great deal of time researching reference books and searching online articles about both the setting (Sidmouth, in southeast Devonshire) and the progression of scientific research in the Regency period, particularly as it relates to geology and the beginnings of paleontology.

One of my favorite finds (which I refer to in the novel) was the 1810 pictorial guide The Beauties of Sidmouth Displayed, by Edmund Butcher, which was a fabulous account of Sidmouth from 200 years ago.

What was the most challenging part for you when writing the story? This story had a few challenges. I’m not a scientist, so dealing with some of the scientific elements was interesting at times, especially when some of the information was not easy to discover.

Likewise trying to balance the use of Regency-era terms with what readers understand today. It’s a tricky balance between his-torical accuracy and having readers think I’ve misspelled a word!

I think the most challenging aspect was trying to write it so it would link with a story written several years ago and have a consistent flow of characterization and style—all while looking after my four children while on summer holidays from school!

Fact vs. Fiction: What liberties (if any) did you take with historical facts to make A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh work? Some of the landscape has eroded over the past 200 years, so I’ve tried for a balance between what historical records suggest existed in Sidmouth’s surrounds with what people can see today. Also (spoiler alert!) the ichthyosaurus Gideon discovers is loosely based on discoveries at that time.

I wanted to move the scene from the fossil-rich, Jurassic-era cliffs of Lyme Regis (familiar to admirers of Jane Austen’s Persuasion) to the lesser-known Sidmouth area, but the cliffs and geology of that region are of Triassic-era formation. I felt like it was an answer to prayer when, in 2017, the largest ichthy-osaurus found in the UK was found in Triassic-era cliffs directly north of Sidmouth—which lent weight to the idea that such things could be found around the Sidmouth area also.

I want to be accurate as much as possible—but I hope readers also understand this is fiction!

This book kicks off your new Regency Brides: Daughters of Aynsley series. How does A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh fit into the larger series? This book introduces us to the daughters of Lord Aynsley, as we see the very proper Caroline finds her notions of propriety challenged by romance, friendship, and faith. We’ll have glimpses of her sisters and hints of the issues they might be facing, which I hope proves a nice teaser for people to read the subsequent books: Underestimating Miss Cecilia and Misleading Miss Verity.

What can readers expect from the Regency Brides: Daughters of Aynsley series? More romance, interesting settings (Misleading Miss Verity takes us to Australia and Scotland!), and more of the questions of faith and how that translates to decisions believers make. I’m so encouraged by readers who appreciate the forthright depictions of faith found in my Regency Brides books, and I want to continue to pose some of those challenges wrapped up in a good story, swoon-worthy romance and intriguing setting.

How does this series intersect with your previous Regency Brides series (A Legacy of Grace and A Promise of Hope)? Do all these characters live in the same world? This series is less connected with the previous two, although we see some links, particularly as Serena (from Miss Serena’s Secret) is one of Caroline’s schoolfriends. I had some fun opening A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh with a scene from The Making of Mrs. Hale, albeit from Caroline’s perspective.

We will also see some crossover between the series in Underestimating Miss Cecilia, as some of the characters mix in similar circles in London. Readers tell me they enjoy revisiting previous characters and seeing what they’re up to now. Having said this, each book can always be read as a stand-alone, so new readers can enjoy a good story and then invest further in the Regency Brides world.

What do you hope readers take away after reading A Hero for Miss Hatherleigh? I hope readers can appreciate that being a hero doesn’t have to mean being some kind of handsome, alpha male, big bicep type of guy, but that heroism is also found in the small, often

Adding a viscount’s daughter to the mix is a complication Gideon never expected—especially since he must stay far away from this young woman he’s falling for in order to protect his beloved sister’s secret.

Second Chances

The author talks about her new historical Amish romance —and why it’s never too late to seek redemption.

An award-winning romance author and member of RWA’s Honor Roll, Molly Jebber tours and speaks about Amish history and traditions. She continues her Amish Charm Bakery series with Ellie’s Redemption (Zebra). Ellie Graber is working at Amish Charm—and making good on a precious chance to reunite with her Amish community. Joel Wenger is one of the few willing to understand her. But as painful misunderstandings and a beauti-ful rival for Joel’s affections threaten to separate the couple for good, can they bridge the gap between distrust and faith to secure a lifetime of love?

In this interview, Molly explains how even an Amish rebel can find redemption, shares what led her to set her series in this historical time and place, and reveals her favorite thing about writing Amish historical romance fiction.

Molly, Ellie’s Redemption is the second book in your Amish Charm Bakery series. What happens in this book?In Ellie’s Redemption, Ellie has asked forgiveness from God, family, and friends for running away, and for the danger and turmoil she brought to Charm in Liza’s Second Chance. She’s ready to redeem herself and show her Amish community she’s serious about her commitment to God and the Amish life.

Amish men won’t court her, and gossips wag their tongues about her past to whoever will listen.

Joel Wenger, a newcomer, arrives and shows interest in her. He chooses to ignore the warnings from friends not to trust her. Unexpected visitors from Ellie’s past, Joel’s parents’ judgment of her, and Joel’s secret threaten any chance of a future they may have together. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens! How does this fit into the larger arc of the series?Ellie is outspoken and courageous. She’s quick to defend her friends and family. Her experience and brush with danger in the outside world in Liza’s Second Chance taught her valuable lessons. She’s humorous, and her friends love being around her.

They respect her for returning to Charm after facing adversities in the outside world and having to contend with the constant gossips who keep her past alive. She’s friends with the main characters in the future books in this series.

Tell us about Ellie Graber and Joel Wenger. What about these two characters made you want to bring them together? Ellie’s unlike most Amish women. She’s bold, direct, loving, and funny. Joel wouldn’t leave the Amish life for any reason. He’s loyal and committed to God. He’s kind, loving, and stub-born. He contemplates the facts before making a decision. Ellie makes snap decisions. She loves Joel’s kind heart, and she finds comfort in his stability.

Joel loves Ellie for her sense of humor, telling him what she thinks, and determination to do whatever she puts her mind to. She enriches his life. They learn from each other. But their road to love isn’t easy. Misunderstandings, prejudice, gossip, and revealed secrets threaten to ruin their courtship.

Ellie is returning to the Amish community after a time away—and now she’s home to start again. What inspired you to have Ellie go on this kind of character journey?Ellie’s mother has died, and she chose to express her grief in anger and frustration. She ran away from the memories of her mother, but she found out this didn’t work. I chose to show that not everyone grieves the same. But Ellie didn’t abandon her faith in God, and he puts a special woman in the outside world in her life to show her the way home.

I wanted to show that even an Amish girl can rebel and get into trouble. But she can be forgiven and return and seek redemp-tion. I show there are consequences for her bad behavior, but rewards for her courage along the way.

Your Amish Charm Bakery series is set among in the Amish in 1912 Ohio. What inspired you to set a series in this particular time and place?I mention the Titanic in Liza’s Second Chance, and I like to pull out tidbits of news readers might find interesting by having Dr. Harrison and Sheriff Williams visit the bakery each morning and split the newspaper and discuss the latest happenings. It’s fun to mention the president, sports, accidents, and more during 1912.

The Amish aren’t supposed to read the newspaper. They are to shut out the outside world’s news of inventions, competitions, and politics. Ellie, Hannah, and her friends who work in the bak-ery are curious, and they listen to the men talk about events. They express their opinions from an Amish point of view. I like to show my characters are human, curious, and bend the rules.

What kind of research did you do for this book? Did anything during your research surprise you?I’ve visited Ohio and Indiana Amish communities numerous times, talked to wonderful Amish women who have helped me, and done a lot of research to write Amish stories. It’s an ongoing process.

In this story nothing surprised me, but in my first series (Change of Heart, Grace’s Forgiveness, and Two Suitors for Anna), I learned about barn-raisings, making butter, livestock care, quilting, and more. I’m a city girl. I had and still have much to learn about farming and livestock! My friends raised on farms are teaching me all kinds of things!

Do you bake? How much of the “bakery” part of the series requires some kind of research?I used to bake, but I have a friend who puts my baking to shame. Connie bakes homemade breads, pies, cakes, cookies, and creates new dessert recipes often. We love it when she knocks on our door with anything she’s whipped up.

My grandmothers and mother were talented cooks and bakers. My favorite is leftover pie dough slathered in butter, sugar, and cinnamon, and then rolled and baked in the oven. Delicious!

I visited Charm and had the best butterscotch pie of my life in a little restaurant there. I couldn’t wait to write about Charm and place my story’s bakery there! I love writing about the sugary scents and homemade bread aromas!

How does your faith impact how you approach your storytelling? My faith comes first in my life, and in my characters’ lives. I asked Jesus Christ to forgive my wrongs and told Him I believed He died and rose again as a sacrifice for those wrongs, and asked Him to come into my heart as a child. I’ve never regretted it. In my journey of life, there’s been tragedies, difficulties, wrong decisions, and health scares. But He swoops in and throws out my bitter cake full of anger, frustration, and sadness many times and replaces it with a nice fluffy one full of joy, courage, and strength. My characters will have flaws and make big mistakes, but never abandon their faith in God.

What’s your favorite thing about writing Amish historical romance fiction?I love writing stories to entertain readers and share with them the lifestyles and traditions of the Amish. I like researching the historical events for the year I choose for the story and insert-ing these tidbits in the chapters for readers to enjoy.

It’s fun to name the president for the time period and notable events that may stir conversation in their homes with grand-parents reminiscing about what their parents told them about this particular year.

Romantic SuSpenSe: Dani Pettrey

Bestselling author Dani Pettrey combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance. Her novels have been lauded by the likes of Publishers Weekly, RT Book Reviews, and USA Today. Her latest release is Deadly Isle, originally published as part of the 3-in-1 collection The Cost of Betrayal (Bethany House): Cut off from any help from the mainland, will Tennyson Kent and first love Callen Frost be able to identify and stop a killer bent on revenge before they become the next victims?

In this interview, Dani identifies the inspiration for the story, reveals her goals when writing it, and outlines the challenges of writing stories that balance faith, romance, and suspense.

What inspired the story in Deadly Isle?I was extremely curious about the work Maryland’s National Resource Police do. It’s the only agency of its kind in the United States. The fascinating Chesapeake Bay Smith Island grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let go. It’s an island steeped in its old English heritage and culture. It’s only reachable by boat or ferry (and only then during the “season”). The residents still speak with the original settlers’ dialect.

What were your goals writing it?To share the beauty of Maryland’s historic and gorgeous Chesapeake Bay, the history of our islands, and to introduce readers to Tennyson Kent and Callen Frost—two characters who grabbed hold of my heart and wouldn’t let go.

What do you want readers to take away after reading Deadly Isle?A story that lingers in their mind long after they turn the last page.

What are the challenges (or benefits) of writing “romances” as a Christian author?I think showing the beautiful nuances of romance from a Christian mindset and delving into the glorious, pure love God created for us to enjoy as we fall in love and proceed in a way that keeps God first. I try to show how a couple grows in step with God’s plan and purposes for a man and a woman as they move into and experience marriage as He created it.

Your novel has elements of faith, romance, and suspense. Which of those elements was hardest for you to write? Which was the easiest?I think the romance element is always the hardest, as it takes the most focus to find the right balance and to show the full texture and nuances men and women deal with, the conflicts

Contemporary romanCe: Carrie Turansky

Carrie Turansky has written more than 20 contemporary and historical inspirational novels, and her books have won the Holt Medallion, the ACFW Carol Award, and the International Digital Award. Her contemporary romance Seeking His Love, the first book in the Bayside Treasures series, is available in a new edition from Flowing Stream Books: For these two wounded hearts, it will take a great leap of faith to overcome past hurts and give love a chance to grow.

In this interview, Carrie explains the building blocks of a great inspirational romance novel, reveals her goals writing Seeking His Love, and shares what she loves most about writing romances.

What inspired the story in Seeking His Love? I’m originally from the Pacific Northwest, and I wanted to write a series set in that beautiful area of the country. I was looking for a town with a name that reflected the message of the story, and a Google search led me to Fairhaven. I did a little online research and fell in love with this unique historic section of Bellingham, Washington. It was fun to include many of the sights around town, shops, and events in the series.

I was involved in drama when I was a teen, and I know firsthand how friendships can deepen and lessons be learned in a program like this. I thought having my heroine direct a Christian youth theater group would be a great occupation for her and give me some interesting story ideas to explore.

What were your goals writing it?I’ve read several articles about teachers who were accused of misconduct with students, and I wanted to explore what would happen if a teacher was falsely accused. How would she deal

with that kind of difficult situation? How would that impact her relationships? How would it be resolved? What lessons would be learned by all those involved?

What do you love the most about romance stories (as a reader or author)? I’m a romantic at heart, and as a reader I enjoy stories that offer hope and inspiration and fulfill the promise of a happily-ever-after ending.

As a writer, I want to entertain readers and give them an inspiring way to relax and take a break, but I also hope to give them a glimpse of God’s love and truth as they journey through the story with my hero and heroine.

What are the challenges (or benefits) of writing “romances” as a Christian author? Our Heavenly Father is the author of romance. He created it, and I enjoy showing how godly relationships are possible and

rewarding. I write novels that can be enjoyed by women of all ages. I have many teen readers, so I always have them in mind when I write and keep the level of romance sweet and inspiring. My novels include romance and so much more—heroic heroes, inspiring heroines, interesting settings, and unique occupa-tions. These are the building blocks of a great inspirational romance novel.

What do you want readers to take away after reading Seeking His Love? The themes of forgiveness and honesty play important roles in this story. I hope readers will be challenged to think about how to respond when they are misunderstood, falsely accused, or contacted by family members who want to restore a broken relationship. FF

Historical romance: Kimberly Woodhouse

A multi-published author of fiction and nonfiction, Kimberley Woodhouse is also a popular speaker who has shared with more than half a million people across the country at more than 2,000 events. Her latest novel is the historical romance Under the Midnight Sun (Bethany House), the final book in the Heart of Alaska trilogy. Co-written with Tracie Peterson, the novel follows one of the first women naturalists—and the man who finds himself working for her.

In this interview, Kimberley talks about the research behind the book, reveals what inspired the story, and explains the benefits of being a Christian author writing romances.

What inspired the story in Under the Midnight Sun?It’s the last in a three-book series set at the Curry Hotel in Alaska back in the 1920s. The inspiration originally was the history of the location and Cassidy Faith Hale—a young girl in our church who was killed. Tracie and I lovingly call it “The Cassidy Series” because it’s in honor of her. The heroine in book one is Cassidy and she continues in each of the books.

The Curry Hotel was such a fascinating place. Even the president stayed there as he traveled to the ceremony for the completion of the Alaska Railroad. It truly was the heart of Alaska for many years.

What were your goals writing this novel? This book has a lot of characters and storylines since it’s the end of a series, but our biggest goal was to portray God’s grace and forgiveness.

What does it take to research the period where and when the book takes place?Traveling to Alaska. But it’s my favorite place and we used to live there, so that’s always fun.

Talking to people who were there. It’s been so fun to speak to people that were children at the Curry and lived there.

Going through tons and tons of digital archives. I absolutely love research so it’s one of the joys of writing for me.

What do you want readers to take away after reading Under The Midnight Sun? That life isn’t perfect, it’s messy and complicated. But God’s joy and forgiveness are there for each one of us.

Romantic SuSpenSe: Susan May Warren

Susan May Warren is the USA Today bestselling, Christy and RITA award-winning novelist of some 70 novels. Her latest romantic suspense novel is Knox (Stonewater Books), the first in her new Montana Marshalls series. Former bull rider Knox Marshall now runs the family ranch, raising champion bucking bulls. Kelsey Jones just wants a safe life, a family, a home. When Kelsey’s past threatens Knox’s family, he’ll have to choose between saving the Marshall legacy or becoming the protector he’s always longed to be.

In this interview, Susan talks about the challenges of balancing faith, romance, and suspense; reveals why she launched the Marshall family saga; and shares the best part of writing Christian romances.

Knox has elements of faith, romance, and suspense. Which of those elements was hardest for you to write? Which was the easiest?Knox is the start of a five-part connected series and an arching plot is woven throughout each book, as well as a plot within each book. So, getting that overarching plot right, dropping the right clues into book one, and making sure I balance that with the book plot was the hardest part. But I made a big spread-sheet (yay for Excel!) and talked it through with my writing pals and—well, we’ll see!

The easiest part was writing the romance and meeting these amazing men and women. I fell in love with this family immedi-ately. I think my readers will, too!

Susan May Warren

FAMILYFICTION.COMromance special

What inspired the story in your novel?I love big family stories. And when you add in trouble, and danger and rescues and family drama, it’s even more fun. I wanted to continue the stories started with the Montana Fire and Montana Rescue series by creating a ranch family who finds themselves in the middle of trouble—and rises to the occasion to save the lives around them.

The story takes place in Montana, but also Texas and even Nashville. As the series progresses, it goes global. I had so much fun writing it. I can’t wait to introduce my reader friends to a whole new amazing family.

What were your goals writing it?The Marshall family—five brothers and a sister—have sort of lost their way after the death of their father. I wanted to write a story about picking up the pieces and discovering that they already had everything they needed to live the life their father had dreamed for them, and more. It’s sort of an allegory about trusting in the Father’s love and plans for your life—even through challenges and danger.

What do you want readers to take away after reading Knox? This story is about how fear can take root and keep you from living the life God has for you. I’m hoping readers will see them-selves in Kelsey, the heroine who is struggling to break free of a dark past, and the hero, a man who wants to do everything to protect her, and see that this is a picture of God’s love for us.

What’s the best thing about writing romances as a Christian? I love a Christian romance because it’s so much more than just about two people falling in love—It’s about how God loves us enough to show Himself and His love through the people in our lives. He longs to delight our hearts and often He does it by putting the “one” into our lives to remind us how much He loves us. A Christian romance is one that touches the soul as well as the heart! FF

Praised by New York Times bestselling author Dee Henderson as “a name to look for in romantic suspense,” Dani Pettrey has sold more than 400,000 copies of her novels to readers eagerly awaiting the next release. Dani combines the page-turning adrena-

line of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance. Her novels stand out for their “wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters” (Publishers Weekly), “gripping storyline[s],” (RT Book Reviews), and “sizzling undercurrent of romance” (USA Today). Her latest release is the romantic suspense title Deadly Isle (Bethany House).

“I actually find it easier to write about crime and danger because I’m a Christian author. Writing about the two allows about the strong contrast that that exists between good and evil, darkness and light. Faith and the beauty of Christ reveal just how sinful man can be and why our deep need for a Savior exists. In addition, it’s through danger and a pressure-cooker that a person’s true faith and character is revealed and can truly shine as a testament to Jesus and the work of His Holy Spirit.”Dani Pettrey—Love and Bullets excerpt https://www.familyfiction.com/dani-pettrey-love-bullets

I ask the Lord before every writing session to enable me to tell the story He would have me tell. I work and work to give each character a spiritual arc that illustrates an aspect of God’s astonishing grace and love because my faith compels me to celebrate those aspects of His character.
