Well, here we go again, rain, rain, rain, it is amazing how all aero modelers are both very informed and avid weather watchers. But let’s look on the bright side (of life), spring and summer are coming — its just a matter of time. I am pleased to announce that Richard Matheson has completed his wings badge qualifi-cation and is now a fully fledged member of the Sunday “Fly and Pray brigade”, congratula-tions Richard your perseverance has now paid off. At our last committee meeting we had some inward correspondence concerning possible enhancements to the Willows flying fields, and the committee is investigating the provision of new tables at the field, extra seating and we are also very lucky that we have a contact (club member) who from time to time will be able to drop some soil in the gullies by the ends of the power patch that will in the future build up for a longer runoff if required. There is currently some discontent at Model Flying NZ between the current committee and another group, the Christchurch Model Aero club committee are disappointed at the current state but we have offered our support to the existing committee as at this stage they are our par-ent body and we have a South Island representative on that committee. Our members do not often have a chance to get together and have a chat with other mod-elers, it is therefore important that when a BBQ is being held please come along and enjoy a sausage (or two). Graham Moffat does a great job providing this service and it is a get together and warm up for everyone. That's it from Me, Happy Flying Grahame Hart

Notice

There will be no club night for august (see August program it is not there) normal service will resume in September.

Minutes of CMAC committee meeting, Thursday 17th July 2017, 6B Middlepark Road, Upper Riccarton, 7.30pm Present: Grahame Hart, Gary Burrows , Trevor Henderson, Ian Harvey, Stewart Morse, Bruce Weatherall; Apologies:. Mark Venter Paul Chisholm; Absent: Grahame Moffatt. Minutes and notes of last meeting. Approved. Matters arising: The working bee was successful with the container area and fence looking good. Fence around the western end of the runway to be extended into the swale while the east-ern end to be extended with the addition of fill and top-soil. It awaits the delivery of the mate-rial when available from the supplier. Correspondence In and Out: Email from Scott Chisholm suggesting above runway improve-ments plus tables and the possible acquisition of some old Lancaster Park seats being given away by the CCC. (Ian H to reply to Scott and enquire re-availability of seating). Email from Paul Clegg (membership secretary MFNZ) re the up-graded wings badge pro-gramme and designations. Committee decided that additional wings examiners and instructors were required in CMAC. Thus, secretary to approach a list of members to determine their will-ingness to be thus designated and to register these fliers with Paul Clegg. Email from MFNZ president outlining why the recent AGM was halted. Email from some members of the MFNZ present at the recent AGM outlining the reasons why the AGM was abandoned. Email from the Constitution Working Group (CWG) set up at 2016 MFNZ AGM outlining what they see as problems and errors in the new constitution proposed by MFNZ Council’s in re-sponse to that proposed by the CWG. Email from members of the CWG outlining why they considered their efforts have been blocked by the MFNZ council and how they consider the impasse can be resolved. Outcome: Secretary to send copies of the emails to committee members and to garner feedback. If all agree, Secretary will then write to MFNZ executive and council supporting their actions as the elected representatives of model fliers in New Zealand. Wings badge certification form from Richard Matheson who recently passed basic power (BP). Treasurer’s report: Little change in account statuses. However, farmer annual rent still to pay and auditor’s fees. Indoor hall hire all paid up for a few months also. Section officers’ reports: R/C Power: A couple of new members looking to join up; one in his 70s and another a helicop-ter flier. New wings graduate (see above); variable Sunday weather has seen varying numbers flying and activity. Free Flight: Some flying and trimming done but no competition lately, but some are coming up. Free flighters are being encouraged to join in the end of month barbeques. Tomboy: Competition coming up this weekend. (23rd) Soaring: Little activity of late but fliers keen to get more F5J (200m launch max) activity un-derway as the weather improves. Pylon: Limited activity with members moving North (Les King) and other working out of town. Weather hasn’t helped either. Saturdays will be official practice days with competitions were possible. One problem is that there are a number of helpers required to run a competition with callers and pylon marshals. AOB: Further discussion on subjects mentioned above. Proposed new membership form tabled by Secretary - to be circulated around members for comment and inclusion in the CMAC web site. Meeting closed at 8:38 with next meeting scheduled for 2nd Thursday in September.

Free flight 2 july by stew (watch me at next tomboy !!) mo_se Got away to an early start from home guided by the weather box which indicated a calm morning at the field. What it did not indicate was the very thick fog that increased steadily the closer I got and virtually made the container invisible from the free flight paddock. John Beresford arrived early also and sur-prisingly the heavy fog started to lift shortly after. It quickly disappeared completely leaving a cool calm morning for flying. Lynn and Roy Gunner also arrived to dou-ble the numbers. Roy contented himself with fly-ing his Vic Smeed designed “Miss 38” and also getting some radio control practice. The rest of us took advantage of the con-ditions to record some open glider times. Indoor report for the 9th July. By team leader bill long Our event this month was F.1.D. As always we used our F.1.L s’ weighing in at 1.4 grams. Kay and Nev were both ready to go promptly. As I have said before .4 of a gram of rub-ber is not much. (For F.1.L. we use about one whole gram maybe a bit more!) Of course motors break while trying to pack in the turns.

Kay’s model flew very well with the trim being perfect until her last flight. Nev was having moderate success but I thought that he thought he could and should have done better, after us thinking about the situation it was decided that a new prop would be the way to go. Kay's’ last flight in which she was hoping to beat me, took off but just didn’t look right, then with a closer view it was noticed that she had damaged her starboard wing while attaching the rubber to the motor stick.

My first flight was not as good as it should have been, it seemed to me that the trim was wrong so for the rest of my flights I changed to a more floating type of trim and managed better times.

The times as published here, I have now changed and are being shown as the adjusted times to reflect the height we fly in. Results. Bill. 18 min 39 sec. Kay. 17 min 59 sec. Nev. 12 min 44 sec. The best two times totalled. The next meeting is on the 20th August, the event being Open Tissue. N.D.C.

Some jokes to take your mind off the CR_py weather

We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.

My Wife was at the beauty shop for two hours. That was only for the estimate. She got a mudpack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off.

Down at the Power Patch

It's been some time since I contributed to the Torque this can be blamed on either having nothing to say and then we sold and purchased and renovated a house so have been very busy.

It's amazing the number of jobs that need to be completed on a house when the contractors have finished.

I now have got my workbench set up in the garage and got most of the models out of storage and back flying. I even have a new model a Seagull Ugly Stick. Had the first run of the engine last Sunday at the strip. Needs more tuning before the maiden flight but it was too cold last Sunday to try and sort it out.

We have had some very cold but sunny Sunday mornings lately but last Sunday was not one of them. Despite the weather we have had good atten-dance and been able to welcome some new members to the club. Always good to have new people flying at the strip keeps things inter-esting.

The strip is in good condition but with all the rain the track into the strip is getting pretty muddy so please be careful.

Remember that we have the BBQ on the last Sunday of the month. If the weather is not suitable we postpone until the next Sunday, if its still not suitable its cancelled until the next month..

See you at the Strip Graham Moffat (the above model flew on the 23rd and flew well OBGGGG)

Bless me and my Tomboy Now I lay down to sleep My Tomboy by my side

There is no room for my wife The bed is not that wide

I pray that when I’m sound asleep

I’ll dream about my plane I hope that God is good to me

And will cancel any rain

Tomorrow is the contest To miss it is a sin

A chance for me to show off In the hopes that I will win

It doesn’t really matter that next month

I’ll be seventy four Because tomorrow I’ll be feeling

Like a kid once more

God forbid my plane to crash What an awful dread However if it has to be

Make it JOHN’s instead

(Author anon, modifications by OBGGGGG) Beresford, Ensoll, Dunstan

Tomboy for 23 july by obggggg I must start off this report by thanking a few people, first to John Dunstan and his twin Ashley Glubb for their kind encouragement of the contest director (OBGGGGG) in his inability to start his reluctant Mills ( A Maxwell Smart “Cone of silence” has been ordered to protect him from all that CR_P) Second thank you is owed to John Beresford for offering his John En-soll fuel mix to help the starting of said reluctant Mills (it worked the last time it was used) even though it cost JB the top spot, third to John Ensoll whose fuel mix did the trick (must make some up for next time) fourth to Zeus for his right on weather prediction and no doubt his mak-ing sure that OBGGGGG flew in the best weather (SEE the results “Creamed Them”.) As predicted by Zeus the weather was going to improve all morning and it did, those who flew early were at a distinct disadvantage with the lack of buoyant air. The sky improved to a clear blue one by 1030hrs at which time OBGGGGG put in his devastating run of times and was finished by 1130hrs (contest cutoff ). It was good to see that the 36” diesels top out the scoring as the electric brigade struggled with wonky batteries (didn’t like the cold weather early in the morning ).

Page 8: CHRISTCHURCH MODEL AERO CLUB (INC)cmac.synthasite.com/resources/Torque/2017/Torque 151-0717.pdf · The prez sez Junior / Junior = under 18 Junior = 18 to 60 Senior = 60 to 80 Senior

Pity that not all could attend with apologies from Lynn (head cold), Stew (land locked due flooded Heathcote river), John Ensoll (just too bloody cold and wet with no gumboots), it was left to those who could, did. The 48” electric brigade had a strategy which under other circumstances might have worked but today was not that day. Due to OBGGGGG’s motor running for 5 minutes plus there are mumblings that the electric run times are not long enough. (there will be no change unless it is shown that all diesels are at an advantage over all contests which at this time is not the case!!!!!) The results speak for themselves. The next contest will be simpler so as to restore some pride in those who feel cheated by an old chap. (HA HA HA )

Out and about Hasn’t Andrew Palmer done well overseas (20th) just remember Andrew the guys above

you are now worrying about this young chap from NZ. (Paul Lagan says that they have the “Halo effect” because they are well known in competition circles) you just have to go to more contests to get a greater “Halo” to move up the list.

Remember that NZ’rs punch above their weight.

FUEL TANKS as understood by BigT For those of you that have diesel model engines then you will have some knowledge of how to tune model engines- yes, both variable compression and also the adjustable needle valve ensure that you will have a good understanding of their operation. Compression and needle valve adjustment are very important, however you can compensate for a badly located tank by the adjustment of both of these.......so why is it that the glow plug engine seems to be more criti-cal for tuning and good engine runs? The mysterious item in all of this is the glow plug- blamed by many for faulty engine runs and certainly generally an innocent party. We are all prone to blame something that we have no control over however always use the model engine manufacturers operating instructions as a start point, and never forget its in his interest not to mislead his customers. Burnt out glow plugs can be a sign of the engine being set too lean, or because the tank is set low in respect to the carburettor, so as the tank is being sucked dry the fuel level in the tank lowers as the engine is running so the engine goes lean, runs hotter, and the poor 8 thou element wire then fails.......no, don't go and fetch another plug but establish what really hap-pened. Simply lifting the tank by 2-3mm may well solve the problem. You can look at the element of the plug but there are other telltale trick that I will write about some other time. So lesson number 1 is to wrap the tank with 8-10mm foam rubber- this will absorb any vibration install that tank in the correct tank location and ensure that the centreline of the tank when viewed from the side coincides with the centreline of the carburettor...if you cannot attain that then you will be struggling all day to get a decent run. Of course you can run your engine a bit richer but you won't have full power on take-off and the engine stalls with known results. Lesson number 2 is to ensure that there are no 'kinks' in your fuel tubing.....you have all heard that before but trust me- I still see those problems. You always want the only restriction in your fuel system as being the tapered needle- anything else will definitely pose you problems. Some may use a fuel filter in the line but that’s another potential problem so filter your fuel be-tween the fuel tank and electric fuel pump. If you use a large syringe to fill your tank like I do then the filter is attached to syringe. Lesson number 3 is to ensure that the tank won't move fore and aft, and side ways- the use of good foam rubber will ensure that the tank is reasonably well located in tank cavity. Any undue movement will end up giving you erratic engine runs! Lesson number 4 is to always use a NEW glow plug when you are doing any flight test-ing. A $15 glow plug is a better investment than spending time at your workbench rebuilding or repairing a model. We've all used old glow plugs and been lucky but most of us have been caught out when they fail- either the engine won't run then you blame the fuel supplier, or the battery. As a human race we find all sorts of reasons to blame something else- I guess because we never take mirrors to the flying field. Getting the tank installed and working properly is perhaps even more important than flight trimming an r/c model- yes, I understand that learning how to tune a model engine can be for some people quite frustrating- but stick with it......we all have had to learn.

Club night 4 July (obggggg’s version) It was a night of what could be done better if only we had the skills and some idea with what we were lined up for by the ingenious task setter Mark Venter. Task was to build a glider which could fly the length of the hall with materials supplied by Mark. Needless to say the resultant efforts were a very mixed bag of at least 95% no hopers failing to reach the end of the hall. The standout designer and builder was our own Secretary Ian Harvey who achieved at least 4 flights which achieved the desired task. His method was to produce a conventional glider with the special ability to fold its wings (flex upwards lots) so that for the first portion of flight it was a guided missile and as it slowed down from its supersonic speed the wings unfolded into a conventional glider which covered the last 25% of the distance easily. ( I understand that he had some previous practice making gliders for his grand children). Photos and captions below show the various attempts / models which didn’t achieve the task.

Mark’s Trier was it a flier??? Yes, see below, nearly OBGGGGG’s Valkarie designs lacking the

power and computer controls to achieve satis-factory flight

The Master in action, the blur on the wings means that they are flexing upwards due supersonic speed of launch

Club night 4 july (mark venters version) Only 6 members turned up to the meeting which was a "build & fly" evening with given materials. A bunch of thin sheets and square sticks were hot wire cut from some building insula-tion which turned out to be really light (and flexible). This foam seems to glue quite well with the cheaper types of cyano but as one clever clod (OBGGGGG) discovered, when a shot of kicker is applied it quickly turns to goo The idea of the evening was that everyone got the same materials, one flat sheet, one stick and a couple of wooden sticks (skewers) and then build a model plane of any shape or form and the one whose plane flew the furthest would be declared the winner. Well everyone was pretty enthusiastic and a number of different designs emerged, mostly of which flew to some degree or another. A second lot of materials was dished out and everyone got to build a second model. The best performer could be used for the flights. At first no one could even reach the furthest wall but the rest of the evening was devoted to fine tuning and slowly the planes made it to the wall, then higher up and final winner was Ian Harvey whose plane hit the furthest wall the highest, in fact half way up the TV screen. Well done Ian. (Although he later revealed that he had recently built a few of these models from foam for the grand kids!) It should be added that all "conventional" designs actually managed to fly quite well by the end of the evening, the only planes that barely managed anything remotely like flying were the two canards that Gary built proving once again that if it looks right it will fly - if it looks like an experiment gone wrong, it will fly like one too. However I think it was a good evening all round and everyone ended up having a heap of fun. It was suggested that we have another one of these evenings and maybe introduce a new factor in the form of a rubber band...... Keep playing guys - practice makes perfect. Mark

“Eyes down and looking”, no it is not a Housie night just a quick build session. L to R Bruce Bonner, Bruce Weatherall, Ian (winner) Har-vey and OBGGGGG

On the first day, God created the dog and said: 'Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.' The dog said: 'That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?' So God agreed. On the second day, God created the monkey and said: 'Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span.' The monkey said: 'Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?' And God agreed. On the third day, God created the cow and said: 'You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer's family For this, I will give you a life span of sixty Years.' The cow said: 'That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?' And God agreed again. On the fourth day, God created man and said: 'Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years.' But man said: 'Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?' 'Okay,' said God, 'You asked for it.' So that is why for our first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Life has now been explained to you…Of course that was life before aero modeling

Editorial Manure. # 151,

What a crock!!!!! I trust you have all read the email from Jonathan Shorer, our NZMAA president, on why the AGM didn’t go ahead. I for one was incensed that it didn’t go ahead as it is imperative that due process and progress of dragging the NZMAA into the 21st century pro-ceeds. The current council have made great strides with what is now a more difficult environ-ment than it was back in the 1970’s when I was on council (CMAC was council then) In what appears to be a bid by some disaffected members to get their own way, they resort to underhand tactics, ONE word missing from a form has stopped the AGM. Now there is sufficient in forma-tion on the form (the members #) which on looking at the NZMAA computer membership lists will give his address. This one move has caused Jonathan to review his leadership and so we will lose a competent person with whom has all the hobby interests at heart.

Who will step into the role with ALL our hobbies various interests at heart and the abil-ity to meet all the varied interests of the hobby?????
