LIVE THE LITURGY—Inspiration for the week. When you wake up in the morning, whose voice is the first one you listen to? Your own? Someone else’s? Or God? We all listen to someone and follow some sort of guidelines and principles. If it is a secular voice that propels us to get up in the morning and take up the task of the day’s agenda, then we may find ourselves off track. The advice found in the Acts of the Apostles was as true then as it is now, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” Most of what we listen to in secular voices is off the axis of truth and distorted. It may sound attractive, but it is deceptive at best. Many have gone astray like sheep and need to return to the Good Shepherd. Only Jesus can offer us the gate of life, and only Jesus as the Good Shepherd can really motivate us to take on the challenges of life. If we don’t recognize his voice, we can risk facing destruction.
Robin Hood and his merry men stole from the rich and gave to the poor. This sounds like a noble thing to do, but when something is wrong, even if the intention is good. Stealing is wrong. Why? Stealing disrespects another person’s right to own property. We know how it hurts when something is stolen from us. It shakes our trust in other people. To protect us from the injustice of robbery. God gave us two commandments. One forbids stealing, and the other forbids even the desire to possess what belongs to another person. These commandments are all about respect for people and respect for the gifts of this world.
“The Devil’s Advocate” was (and still is) a
real position in the Church.
In the very early days of Christianity, a local community would recognize someone as a saint after his death, holding him up as a person who lived an exemplary and heroic life for Jesus. Beginning around 10000, however the Church desired greater uniformity and scrutiny, so both bishops and popes began to regularize this process. To better authenticate the canonization, the Church even devised a position known as “the Devil’s Advocate” in 1450. This person’s job was to cast doubt on the virtues and miracles reported when a holy man or woman was brought to the pope to be recognized as a saint. This position still exists today.
Catechism The Seventh Commandment forbids stealing or harming what belongs to another. It requires that we care for the goods of the earth and share them. (cf. no. 2401)
Our Sanctuary Lamp burns this
week for vocations to the priesthood
and religious life.
