The Order of Worship November 5, 2017
9:00 and 11:00 A.M.
ALL SAINTS’ DAY
THE CHURCH GATHERS . . .
Children are welcome in worship here. A nursery is available during the entire service. Any
who are baptized are invited to receive the elements of the Lord’s Supper.
When the prelude begins let us quietly prepare for the worship of almighty God.
PRELUDE O Welt, ich muß dich lassen, No. 3 Johannes Brahms
O World, I Now Must Leave Thee
INTROIT (11:00) At the River adapt. Aaron Copland
Shall we gather by the river, Where bright angels feet have trod, With its
crystal tide forever Flowing by the throne of God. Yes we’ll gather by the
river, the beautiful river, Gather with the saints by the river That flows by
the throne of God.
Soon we’ll reach the shining river, Soon our pilgrimage will cease, Soon our
happy hearts will quiver With the melody of peace. (Refrain)

OPPORTUNITIES AND CONCERNS OF THE CONGREGATION
MINUTE FOR MISSION Michael Yates
CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 107
Leader: O give thanks to the LORD, for God is good; the steadfast love of the
LORD endures forever.
People: Let all humankind thank the LORD for God’s steadfast love and
wonderful works. And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and
songs of joy!
Leader: Lift up your hearts!
People: We lift them to the LORD!
TO PRAISE AND CONFESS ...
*HYMN NO. 526 (blue hymnal) For All the Saints Sine Nomine
*CALL TO CONFESSION
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)
Gracious God, in every age you have called people to live in faith. Forgive us
when “the communion of saints” becomes merely a line in a creed, rather than
a call to embody a life of justice and faithfulness. Forgive us when we do not
follow Jesus’s way of compassion and mercy and peace. Forgive us for
neglecting our role as stewards of all that you and those who have gone before
have given us. Help us to live, love and give with the same generous spirit as
our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
*RESPONSE Take, O Take Me as I Am John L. Bell
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Friends, believe the Good News!
People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
*RESPONSE Celtic Alleluia (sing twice) Fintan O’Carroll

SERMON Rev. Dr. Buran Phillips
“Hold the door, say please, say thank you, Don’t steal, don’t cheat, and don’t lie, I
know you got mountains to climb but, Always stay humble and kind.”
Humble and Kind, Tim McGraw
*HYMN Come Away From Rush and Hurry Hyfrydol
(See insert)
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Unison) The Apostles’ Creed (Traditional)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus
Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of
the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and
buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he
ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father
Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I
believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints;
the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
Amen.

THIS MORNING’S ORGAN MUSIC is arrangements of Heinrich Isaac’s famous
melody O Welt, ich muß dich lassen, dated 1495. Originally given the secular title and text
Innsbruck, ich muß dich lassen, the sacred text followed in 1555. The melody became a
Lutheran chorale and was arranged often by many composers, including J. S. Bach.
Brahms actually set it twice within his eleven chorale preludes. In contrast, the choral
music heard today is from the vast body of American songs and spirituals, so compelling
and inviting. The Copland arrangement is from his Old American Songs No. 2 (1952).

Volunteer Ministry Center
Buy 1, Bring 1 to our new VMC Donation drop-off
Westminster Presbyterian Church supports the Volunteer Ministry Center's
local mission to help homeless individuals into permanent, supportive
housing and prevent homelessness. WPC members give their time, cooking
skills, funds and needed items. We're proud to announce you can now bring
items for VMC's year-round wish list to WPC for donation. We've set up a
permanent drop-off area at the bottom of the stairs to the lower classroom
level.
Please save the VMC Wish List on the back side of this flyer. When you're
shopping and pick up an item for yourself, consider grabbing another to
drop off at WPC the next Sunday. Donations of these items are a great way
to support VMC's mission and truly show Westminster Presbyterian Church
is where faith and life connect.
The Volunteer Ministry Center is celebrating their 30th anniversary with a
building re-dedication, reception, open house, tours and activities for
children on Sunday, November 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the VMC Resource
