I do believe that if we are seeking a life filled with the joy that God can bring, we need to consider what we truly understand “standard of living” to mean. Is it only about bigger, better, newer, fancier, faster, shinier, whatever? Within these terms of “standard” and “quality,” do we find or see a life that is healthy: physically, mentally, and spiritually? Smart phones or back up cameras in cars, to mention a few things, are good, useful, and even helpful. But do they add to the quality of our lives? Do all these new technologies and labor saving devices enable us to spend more time with God, our family, and our friends? Are these new human technologies freeing us up so we can have a better life, or are they taking our time and energy? God created us to be in relationship: relationship with God, each other, and God's created universe. We were not born to spend time with stuff. May our standard of living be a quality of life spent with God and God's creation. Peace, Gordon

Christ Church – where we gather to

    worship, pray, sing,

    and share so

    together we may

    serve our

    community and the

    world.

    What Does It Really Mean?

We humans rely heavily upon our ability to communicate. We communicate in many

different ways: words, pictures, music, smells, body language, to mention a few. The

use of human language, i.e. words, is clearly the chief way we consciously “speak” to

each other throughout the world. We generally speak to each other or write to each

other. Although to really make a point, we may use both spoken and written forms of

communication at the same time. All this works because we basically agree what the

    words mean.

Yet, there are many times in which the words do not mean what we think they mean.

This can occur for several reasons. Within any language words can have a variety of

meanings; as such, one can intend one meaning while another has a different

understanding. Such an error can be unintentional or deliberate. These same

misunderstandings can occur when we use words or phrases with similar, or apparently

similar, meanings. Take for example the terms, “standard of living” and “quality of

    life.”

On the surface of things it is so very easy to see these terms as not only related, but

similar. It is easy to argue that the high standard of living we enjoy in the US enables

us to have such a good quality of life. Yet, is the acquisition of “stuff” really leading to

    our having a quality life?

I am not suggesting that we all go live in caves and return to a life as hunter/gatherers. I

do believe that if we are seeking a life filled with the joy that God can bring, we need to

consider what we truly understand “standard of living” to mean. Is it only about bigger,

better, newer, fancier, faster, shinier, whatever? Within these terms of “standard” and

“quality,” do we find or see a life that is healthy: physically, mentally, and spiritually?

When we are seeking or drawn to a life that can be quantified by having a “standard of

living,” whose standard are seeking? Are we looking for God's standard, or something

    else?

Smart phones or back up cameras in cars, to mention a few things, are good, useful, and

even helpful. But do they add to the quality of our lives? Do all these new technologies

and labor saving devices enable us to spend more time with God, our family, and our

friends? Are these new human technologies freeing us up so we can have a better life,

or are they taking our time and energy? God created us to be in relationship:

relationship with God, each other, and God's created universe. We were not born to

    spend time with stuff.

May our standard of living be a quality of life spent with God and God's creation.

    Peace,

    Gordon

From the Deacon’s desk As I sit here in Atlanta with Diane waiting to board our flight to Honduras I was thinking how very

blessed we are to be a part of the family of Christ Church. I remember the first Sunday we visited

Lancaster to attend the service as we were looking at areas and properties deciding where we were

going to finally call home. Everyone we talked to welcomed us and provided us with very helpful

    information.

In the weeks and months after that Sunday as we made our final decision I am so glad that we came

to Lancaster on that Sunday morning.

I want to thank everyone for welcoming us and accepting us. I also want to thank you for the support

and the gift at Christmas, it was unexpected but much appreciated and will be used as needed at Our

Little Roses in Honduras for whatever is needed to support the girls or the home.

    Thank You.

I look forward to serving Christ’s Church as we grow in a shared ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ.

May the Lord continue to send his blessings upon us at Christ’s Church.

    In Christ,

    Deacon Rocky
