ST . NICHOLAS CHRIST COLLEGE BRECON JUNIORS HOUSE It has been an incredibly busy and exciting couple of weeks since the last newsletter. We have had our magnificent Cookery and Craft competition, had an author workshop with Dan Anthony and held our magical Eisteddfod as part of our Welsh Week. We were absolutely delighted with the response to the Eisteddfod Cookery and Craft competition and the entries that arrived in school last week were so very impressive. It was astonishing to see the variety of entries, each and every one unique and different. The volunteer judges from the Society of Friends of CCB and also Mrs Phelps had a very difficult morning and found it almost impossible to choose between items. Similarly, Mrs Houghton from the Art department agonised when judging our portrait paintings. Please give yourselves a pat on the back for all your efforts in both supporting your child(ren) and providing them with materials to enter, not to mention administering a healthy sprinkling of praise and patience! It is such support which makes events such as this a huge success and so thank you. Whether your child wrote a story, painted a picture, made Welsh cakes, recited a poem or played an instrument, the Eisteddfod has been a wonderful vehicle to allow pupils with all manner of strengths and interests to shine at something. Again, extended thanks to parents who helped their children to make items, practice items, learn items or find items to wear! Thanks also go to Mrs Price and Alaw who played the harp so beautifully in our Eisteddfod. Edition 16 Lent Term 2017 Dear Parents St.Nick’s News Many congratulations to Wye and what a very close competition indeed! WELSH WEEK27th FEBRUARY-3rd MARCHWelsh food tasting was a very popularactivity last week when the children hadthe opportunity to try a variety of traditional and local foods. Some weremore popular than others! The children enjoyed Welsh rarebit, ablycooked by Mr Kerr. Miss Brown rustled upsome faggots which went down very well. There wasn’t a faggot to be seen in Brecon after she cleaned out the localsupplies! Mrs Lewis treated children to arange of Welsh cheeses and Mrs Gardnerraised a few eyebrows (and noses) withlaverbread and cockles. Finally, Miss Hallinan tempted the childrenwith bara brith, Welsh cakes and localapple juice. Afterwards, the children were invited to give feedback by thinkingof an adjective starting with the letter of the food they tasted. They recorded‘loathsome laverbread’, ‘cracking cockles’and ‘fantastic faggots’! All in all a verysuccessful day, rounded off with somepancakes as it was also Shrove Tuesday!St Nicks’ pupils certainly have big appetites! More details about ourEisteddfod can be found on the schoolwebsite.

As part of our Welsh weekcelebrations the children really enjoyed their authorworkshop with Dan Anthonywho wrote the very popularchildren’s book ‘Rugby Zombies’. He did some lovelycreative writing activities withall the pupils and commentedon the brilliant ideas he heard.
