Dear Cathedralites
This morning at 10am we welcome the
Justices of the Peace who are here in
Nelson for their Annual General Meeting
Justices of the Peace are known mainly
for their character and integrity They
spend an enormous number of volunteer
hours making life easier for others
It has been a pretty full on week with the
Holiday Programme every morning 10-12
while under John Laing who provides a
wonderful programme on which we can
be proud I found a few extra muscles as
I was in charge of the games so if you
see me limping you will know why
My thanks to Father Steve for organis-
ing a really impressive Service here at
the Cathedral for Passchendaele The
Cathedral was involved in the Civic
Service last Thursday which the Mayor
the RSA and others were represented I
loved the phrase Steve incorporated into
the service It is called the Kohima
address ldquoWhen you go home tell them of
us and stay - for your tomorrow we
gave our todayrdquo
Father Steve and I had a very
productive meeting with Mayor Rachel
earlier this week We are all keen to
see the Cathedral at the heart of this
city and to co-ordinate various activities
to make this happen
It is 500 years since Martin Luther
nailed the 95 thesis to the door of the
church Famously he is known as the
one who highlighted the words of St
Paul ldquojustification by faith alonerdquo
We are privileged to have the Revd Dr
Graeme OrsquoBrien Canon of the
Cathedral singing at our 10am service
this morning Graeme is well known in
music circles
It was a thrill to meet up with Sir
Richard and Dianne Hadlee earlier in
the week as they came to Nelson to
promote the book that Richard has
recently completed about his father
Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral Children are welcome to our services
There is a playpen for younger children and there are toys in the quiet room which is the room
at the front of the Cathedral on the left hand side PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TAKE THIS PUBLICATION AWAY WITH YOU

Walter and the famous 1949 tour of
England which took over 9 months
Walter Hadlee was a fine Christian man
who belonged to the Methodist Church
I took his funeral a few years ago
Tonight the Revd Simon Martin Vicar of
All Saints will be preaching at both the
530 and 7pm services
It will be an exciting weekend next week
for the family of Bishop Mules once
Bishop of Nelson Diocese The family
will be having a reunion which include of
returning to the Cathedral
The Cathedral will be hosting this
Saturday the interfaith World Day of
Prayer Service from 4-5 on Saturday
afternoon Come and join us
I am excited that next Sunday we will
have preaching here at the
Cathedral the Dean of Sydney
Kanishka Raffel Make sure you invite
others to the Service
Meanwhile some wait with baited breath
to see what sort of combination of
parties we will have to rule our country
over the next three years Many I fear
have become totally uninterested with
the antics of parties trying to stitch the
deal to stay in power Egos should never
get in the way from our roles in society
to be God honouring to do the best for
our people no matter what
Pray for the staff day on Wednesday as
we look at the upcoming series on
lsquoGrowing the Cathedralrsquo We will also be
looking at the various opportunities
coming up in 2018 and 19 to enable this
Cathedral to grow
Meanwhile have a great week

The Golden Calf
When the people saw that Moses de-layed to come down from the moun-tain the people gathered around Aa-ron and said to him lsquoCome make gods for us who shall go before us as for this Moses the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt we do not know what has become of-himrsquo Aaron said to them lsquoTake off the gold rings that are on the ears of your wives your sons and your daughters and bring them to mersquo So all the people took off the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron He took the gold from them formed it in a mouldand cast an im-age of a calf and they said lsquoThese are your gods O Israel who brought you up out of the land of Egyptrsquo When Aaron saw this he built an altar before it and Aaron made proclamation and said lsquoTomorrow shall be a festival to the LORDrsquo They rose early the next day and offered burnt-offerings and brought sacrifices of well-being and the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to revelThe LORD said to Moses lsquoGo down at once Your people whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt have acted perversely they have been quick to turn aside from the way that I commanded them they have cast for themselves an image of a calf and have worshipped it and sacrificed to it and said ldquoThese are your gods O Israel who brought you up out of the land of Egyptrdquorsquo The LORD said to Moses lsquoI have seen this
people how stiff-necked they are Now let me alone so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them and of you I will make a great nationrsquo But Moses im-plored the LORD his God and said lsquoO LORD why does your wrath burn hot against your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand Why should the Egyptians say ldquoIt was with evil intent that he brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earthrdquo Turn from your fierce wrath change your mind and do not bring disaster on your peo-ple Remember Abraham Isaac and Israel your servants how you swore to them by your own self saying to them ldquoI will multiply your descend-ants like the stars of heaven and all this land that I have promised I will give to your descendants and they shall inherit it for everrdquorsquo And the LORD changed his mind about the disaster that he planned to bring on his people
Philippians 4 1-9
Therefore my brothers and sis-ters whom I love and long for my joy and crown stand firm in the Lord in this way my beloved I urge Eu-odia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord Yes and I ask you also my loyal companion help these women for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers whose names are in the book of life
Page 9
Rejoice in the Lord always again I will say Rejoice Let your gentle-ness be known to everyone The Lord is near Do not worry about anything but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Je-sus Finally belovedwhatever is true whatever is honourable what-ever is just whatever is pure what-ever is pleasing whatever is com-mendable if there is any excel-lence and if there is anything wor-thy of praise think about these things Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me and the God of peace will be with you
St Matthew 22 1-14 Once more Jesus spoke to them in
parables saying 2 lsquoThe kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son 3 He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet but they would not come 4 Again he sent other slaves saying ldquoTell those who have been invited Look I have prepared my dinner my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered and everything is ready come to the wedding banquetrdquo 5 But they made light of it and went away one to his farm another to his busi-ness 6 while the rest seized his slaves maltreated them and killed them 7 The king was enraged He sent his troops destroyed those murderers
and burned their city 8 Then he said to his slaves ldquoThe wedding is ready but those invited were not worthy 9 Go therefore into the main streets and in-vite everyone you find to the wedding banquetrdquo 10 Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found both good and bad so the wed-ding hall was filled with guests
11 lsquoBut when the king came in to see the guests he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe 12 and he said to him ldquoFriend how did you get in here without a wedding roberdquo And he was speechless 13 Then the king said to the attendants ldquoBind him hand and foot and throw him into the outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnash-ing of teethrdquo 14 For many are called but few are chosenrsquo
530pm Proverbs 3 1-12
My child do not forget my teaching but let your heart keep my com-mandments for length of days and years of life and abundant welfare they will give you Do not let loyalty and faithfulness forsake you bind them round your neck write them on the tablet of your heart So you will find favour and good repute in the sight of God and of people Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your pathsDo not be wise in your own eyes fear the LORD and turn away from evil It will be a healing for your flesh and a refreshment for your body
Page 10
Honour the LORD with your sub-stance and with the first fruits of all your produce then your barns will be filled with plentyand your vats will be bursting with wine My child do not despise the LORDrsquos disci-pline or be weary of his reproof for the LORD reproves the one he loves as a father the son in whom he delights
Philippians 1 12-22
I want you to know beloved that what has happened to me has actually helped to spread the gospel so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to everyone else that my imprisonment is for Christ and most of the brothers and sisters having been made confident in the Lord by my imprisonment dare to speak the word with greater bold-ness and without fear Some proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry but oth-ers from goodwill These proclaim
Christ out of love knowing that I have been put here for the defence of the gospel the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition not sincerely but intending to increase my suffering in my imprisonment What does it mat-ter Just this that Christ is proclaimed in every way whether out of false mo-tives or true and in that I rejoice Yes and I will continue to rejoice for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will result in my deliverance It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in any way but that by my speaking with all bold-ness Christ will be exalted now as al-ways in my body whether by life or by death For to me living is Christ and dying is gain If I am to live in the flesh that means fruitful labour for me and I do not know which I prefer

Honour the LORD with your sub-stance and with the first fruits of all your produce then your barns will be filled with plentyand your vats will be bursting with wine My child do not despise the LORDrsquos disci-pline or be weary of his reproof for the LORD reproves the one he loves as a father the son in whom he delights

parables saying 2 lsquoThe kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son 3 He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet but they would not come 4 Again he sent other slaves saying ldquoTell those who have been invited Look I have prepared my dinner my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered and everything is ready come to the wedding banquetrdquo 5 But they made light of it and went away one to his farm another to his busi-ness 6 while the rest seized his slaves maltreated them and killed them 7 The king was enraged He sent his troops destroyed those murderers
and burned their city 8 Then he said to his slaves ldquoThe wedding is ready but those invited were not worthy 9 Go therefore into the main streets and in-vite everyone you find to the wedding banquetrdquo 10 Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found both good and bad so the wed-ding hall was filled with guests
