SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTERMORE THAN AN OBLIGATIONMÁS QUE UNA OBLIGACIÓN

?It?s my Cathol ic duty to support the Church.? ?It is my obl igation as a Cathol ic

to attend Mass on Sunday.? ?I am obl igated as a Christ ian to be nice to others.?

These phrases and others l ike them are a reminder that l iving our Cathol ic

fai th is often looked at as carrying out a series of duties and ful fi l l ing a l ist of

obl igations.

Whi le l iving our fai th carries wi th i t the requi rement to l ive according to

values of the Gospel and the teachings of the Church, i t begins wi th our

relat ionship wi th Jesus. This relat ionship starts wi th a declaration of love, not

a set of requi rements. Jesus says, ?As the Father has loved me, so I also love you. Remain in my love (John

15:9-17).? Jesus? words mean that we are part of a beauti ful chain of love?the Father loving the Son, the Son

loving the disciples, the disciples loving each other. Our love is to flow from this chain, not as an obl igation

but as an opportuni ty.

In our human relat ionships, i f we respond to our friends and those we say we love out of a sense of

obl igation, duty or gui l t , the relat ionship is headed toward resentment and bi tterness. If we spend t ime wi th

someone because we ?owe? i t to them or because we are afraid they wi l l be hurt i f we do not, we wi l l grow to

resent that person. The same thing can happen wi th God. If l iving our fai th becomes mostly ful fi l l ing

obl igations and duties, the joy wi l l be drained out of our experience.

The desi re of Jesus is for us to l ive our fai th wi th the profound joy of knowing that he cal ls us friends and

loves us just because he does. His command to love is not a command after al l . It is an

invi tat ion by a friend to a whole way of l i fe that brings us l i fe and gives l i fe to others.

Jesus says he does not cal l us slaves but cal ls us friends. Friends do not impose duties

on each other. Friends invi te each other to share in the love and l i fe they have to offer

each other. As disciples of Jesus, the choice is ours. To be a slave to duty or a loving

friend of the Lord himself. I am going for the friendship. How about you?

Chr ist Cat hedr al Par ish: Diocesan Chil dr en's Choir Summer Camp The thi rd annual Diocesan Chi ldren's Choir Camp is now accepting registrat ion for i ts summer program. The morning camp wi l l be held June 25-29 on the Christ Cathedral Campus in Garden Grove. Under the di rection of Christ Cathedral Music Director Dr. John Romeri , students wi l l develop choral singing, musical sk i l ls and l i turgical knowledge. The weeklong camp wi l l conclude on Friday, June 29, wi th the camp choir singing the noon Mass. Camp staff includes: David Bal l , Patrick Flahive, Matthew Gray, Lauren McCaul, and Quang Nguyen. BLESSED MOTHER PROCESSION, BLESSING AND MASS All are invi ted to attend a procession, blessing and Mass in honor of our Blessed Mother on Friday, May 11. The procession wi l l begin at 5:45 pm in the Arboretum, fol lowed by Mass at 7:00 p.m. The regularly-scheduled 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm Masses wi l l be moved to 7:00 pm; there wi l l be no confessions fol lowing Mass on May 11.

Currently the program is look ing for volunteers to pick up food from locations in Orange County. Days of the week and t ime of pick up vary. Persons doing this important job must:

asist i r a Misa el domingo." "Estoy obl igado como Crist iano a ser amable con los

demás." Estas y otras frases simi lares son un recordatorio de que vivi r nuestra

fe Catól ica a menudo se considera como l levar a cabo una serie de deberes y

cumpli r una l ista de obl igaciones.

Mientras que vivi r nuestra fe l leva con él el requisi to de vivi r según los valores

del Evangel io y las enseñanzas de la iglesia, comienza con nuestra relación

con Jesús. Esta relación comienza con una declaración de amor, no una l ista

de requisi tos. Jesús dice, "Como el Padre me ha amado, así también te amo. Permanezcan en mi amor (Juan

15:9-17). "Las palabras de Jesús signi fican que somos parte de una hermosa cadena de amor... el Padre

amando al Hi jo, el Hi jo amando a los discípulos, los discípulos amándose unos a otros. Nuestro amor debe

flui r de esta cadena, no como una obl igación sino como una oportunidad.

En nuestras relaciones humanas, si respondemos a nuestros amigos y a aquel los que decimos que amamos

por un sentido de obl igación, deber o culpa, la relación se di rige hacia el resentimiento y la amargura. Si

pasamos t iempo con alguien porque "debemos" a el los o porque tenemos miedo de que sean lastimados si no

lo hacemos, vamos a crecer a resenti r a esa persona. Lo mismo puede pasar con Dios. Si vivi r nuestra fe se

convierte en sobre todo cumpli r obl igaciones y deberes, la alegría será el iminada de nuestra experiencia.

El deseo de Jesús es que vivamos nuestra fe con el profundo gozo de saber que él nos l lama amigos y nos

ama sólo porque él lo hace. Su mandamiento de amar no es un mandamiento después

de todo. Es una invi tación de un amigo a toda una forma de vida que nos trae la vida y

da vida a los demás. Jesús dice que no nos l lama esclavos, sino que nos l lama amigos.

Los amigos no imponen deberes el uno al otro. Los amigos se invi tan mutuamente a

comparti r el amor y la vida que t ienen para ofrecerse. Como discípulos de Jesús, la

elección es nuestra. Ser esclavo del deber o un amigo amoroso del Señor mismo. Yo voy

por la amistad. ¿Y tú?

Par r oquia de l a Cat edr al de Cr ist o: Campament o Diocesano de ver ano par a el cor o de niños El tercer campamento anual de coros de niños diocesanos está aceptando registraciones para su programa de verano. El campamento de la mañana se l levará a cabo el 25-29 de junio en el campus de la Catedral de Cristo. Bajo la di rección del Dr. John Romeri , di rector musical de la Catedral de Cristo, los estudiantes desarrol larán cantos corales, habi l idades musicales y conocimientos l i túrgicos. El campamento que durará una semana conclui rá el viernes 29 de junio, con el coro del campamento cantando la Misa del mediodía. Pr ocesión, Bendición y Misa de l a Sant ísima Vir gen Mar ia Todos están invi tados a asist i r la procesión, bendición y Misa en honor a nuestra Santísima Virgen Maria el viernes, 11 de mayo. La procesión iniciará a las 5:45 p.m. en el Arboretum y será seguido por la Misa a las 7:00 p.m. Las Misas de 5:30 p.m. y 6:30 p.m. serán movidas a las 7:00 p.m.; no habrá confesiones después de Misa el 11

de mayo.

Minist er io de Ser vicio a l a Comunidad de l a Par r oquia de l a Cat edr al de Cr ist oEl Ministerio de Servicio a la Comunidad de la Parroquia de la Catedral de Cristo necesi ta a voluntarios comprometidos todo el año. Actualmente el programa está en búsqueda de voluntarios para recoger comida de di ferentes lugares en el Condado de Orange. Los días de la semana varían al igual que los horarios. Las personas haciendo este importante trabajo deben:

- Ser mayores de 18 años- Tener carro propio- Hacer un compromiso a un día y un horario- Estar dispuesto a tomar un curso de entrenamiento del Manejo de Al imentos
