Cleveland Central Catholic | 2019-2020 Advancement Review 1

A Memorable School Year at CCC!

We admit that we never saw a worldwide pandemic coming when we planned for the 2019-20 school year at Cleveland Central Catholic. The school year began on a high note, with the CCC community coming together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the opening of Cleveland Central Catholic High School in 1969. Over 300 friends of our school – including three bishops – joined in the celebration on a picture perfect early September evening. It was a very special night for our school community!

Just six months later, it seemed our entire world had abruptly shattered. What originally seemed to be a localized flu-like virus in China was now a worldwide pandemic, and it had serious implications for all Americans. On March 12, 2020, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered all Ohio schools (K-12) closed, effective at the end of school on Monday, March 16. There was no precedent for our school to follow, and many questions arose. How can we continue to educate our students? How will everyone remain safe from COVID-19? What will be the impact on our faculty and staff? How can we meet the needs of our families, whose lives had now been upended? As always, the CCC family relied on our faith in God, strong leadership, and an amazing effort by our faculty, staff, board, and supporters.

In just four days, the school’s administration, in cooperation with the Diocese of Cleveland, and with a focused team of faculty members, created and executed an impressive plan that prepared our school to move into the uncharted waters of “distance learning.” Over 400 Chromebooks and scores of “hot spot” cards provided internet access to our families who had previously been without it at home. Faculty members logged long hours preparing, teaching, fielding questions, following up, and occasionally providing emotional support. Guidance counselors worked overtime to keep up with their regular work and families now facing emerging crises. All told, it was an inspiring team effort that allowed teaching and learning to continue right through the end of a very turbulent year. Happily, over 99% of the Class of 2020 graduated. There was genuine gratitude and there was (and still is) great hope. Our COVID challenges continue into the new school year, and CCC is again delivering for our families. In addition to the academic and other services, CCC is providing 250 meals twice weekly to our families most in need.

This CCC Advancement Review 2019-20 is our report on the school’s recent fiscal year, which concluded on June 30, 2020. As always, we are thankful to all those individuals, corporations and foundations who have made this achievement a reality. We are especially grateful to the Diocese of Cleveland and The Third Federal Foundation for their continued partnership and strong support of our unique ministry.

We are also grateful to God – and you – every day for the many blessings that flow through the Cleveland Central Catholic community. We thank all who pray for our school, support our students and their dreams, and provide the financial resources needed to advance the mission of Catholic education in our city. Your commitment empowers our students and their families, which also benefits their neighborhoods and our broader community.

We are, of course, also grateful to all the adults who supported the progress that our students made. This includes our outstanding faculty, our dedicated staff, extraordinary Advisory Board members, and other volunteers who help us in so many important ways. Finally, we wish to salute our students, who embrace this encouragement and bravely face these challenging times every day.

Most gratefully,

John E. Cvetic Chair, Advisory Board
