From The Secretary
Welcome to the May/July edition of the Chook Run. I hope you are all keeping well and are
ready for another great year with all things poultry. With the Ag Shows and first Auction
over for the year attention turns to our 2 big shows of the year the Rare Breeds & Waterfowl
Show. It’s looking like a very big turnout so please get your entries in soon so you don’t miss
out.
Our Annual show should be a full shed as always. Schedules will be out later this month.
Our Annual Pure Bred Auction will be moved to Sunday the 18th of September because of the
Judging Seminar held at Wauchope at the end of August.
Also we will hold a learning day 2 weeks after our Auction in September. Please let one of
our committee know if want a topic covered on this day so we can get prepared beforehand.
Hope to see you all at our events
Goodluck to all exhibitors for the upcoming shows!
Club Secretary, Shane Debreceny.
New Web Site Address Due to some problems accessing our domain name we have had to set up a new Web

Lawrence Smith
8.11.91 – 17.1.16
Lawrence Smith, a member of the Wauchope Poultry Club for a number of years was tragically killed in a predawn
boating accident 15kms off Dampier on Sunday morning 17 January 2016 whilst heading out for a day’s blue water
fishing at Wandoo Reef 40 miles off the Pilbara coast. Lawrence was 24 years of age.
The boat in which he was travelling hit rocks close to Mawby Island, the last island in the Dampier archipelago before
reaching clear water. It was simply a tragic, tragic accident.
Lawrence and his brother Cameron joined the Wauchope Poultry Club in about 2002 following a chance meeting
with Digger Everingham of Kempsey. Digger gave Lawrence a Langshan cockerel and a couple of hens and from there
Lawrence’s interest in poultry grew. Along the way he was mentored by Digger and others including Bob Forrest, the
late Doug Waugh and Graham Cooke, although it could be argued that Cookie’s influence was questionable. Ha-ha
When Lawrence was 18 he left the NSW mid north coast and relocated to Perth to complete his apprenticeship as an
air-conditioning technician. About the time Lawrence completed his apprenticeship, he met his lovely girlfriend
Louise Flanagan in Perth. They fell in love and before long he accepted a job at Karratha in the North West. The great
outdoors and the fishing lifestyle bit Lawrence hard. He loved it, he lived for fishing and he was very good at it.
The boys in the Pilbara work hard drink hard and play hard, all of them own a boat of some sort. Many times
Lawrence would work all week only to be on a boat Friday evening heading for sea to fish all weekend.
Lawrence loved the great outdoors, camping, crabbing, fishing or whatever was going on at the time. I am sure that
Lawrence would never have left Karratha or the Pilbara region, as he found his niche and absolutely loved the
lifestyle that the region provided. He was smitten with fishing and if there was any time left for anything else, he
went fishing.
What we will miss about you Lawrence is - your laugh, your cheeky grin, your happy go lucky personality, your ability
to make friends and get on with people.
Lawrence will be remembered as a lovable young bloke which is encapsulated in Aimee Thomson’s Facebook post
“An absolute champion, the life of the party, but a true gentleman.”
We are missing you little buddy, you are in our hearts forever and our thoughts each and every day.
EPA Judging Seminar
On the weekend of August 27th & 28th our club will host a Judging Seminar.
I will attach to your email a Seminar Application form if you would like to attend please fill
in and send back to the EPA ASAP as there will be limited spots available.
This will be a great opportunity for anyone wanting to become a judge of Poultry in the
future.
