WAKE UP CALL! Published 25 July 2019

It ’s been a struggle having to distance myself from what has long been my escape from school work. But I ’ve spent this week reflecting, and I real ised that gaming has undeniably become an addiction, which has hampered both my earthly and spiritual l ife. God’s word in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 kept pricking my conscience-

Alright guys, I ’ve decided to take a rain check on gaming for now. Instead I ’ l l find comfort in prayer and support through God’s Word.

ADDICTIONPublished 16 June 2019

The past 2 weeks have been a complete blur to me. The last thing I remember was from last night: my mom bursting into my room and yel l ing at me to get to bed. I remember glancing at the clock on-screen. 3 am… Guess time real ly fl ies whenever I game!We had a long talk… drats! my computer rights are gone now, and the possibi l ity of counsel l ing is on the table. (NOOOOOO!!) However, in retrospect, I have been pretty out of it ever since I started this gaming marathon - no real sense of night and day, skipping meals, having no idea what was going on around me… Yeah, maybe I do need help.

The birth of Christ was supernatural because Jesus was born of the virgin Mary. No human father was involved (Matthew 1: 25).To redeem us from our sins, God required a sacrifice which was without sin. Jesus is the perfect sacrificial “Lamb of God” (John 1:29). Without Him there would be no salvation for mankind. Understanding these truths will help to strengthen our faith, love and devotion for Jesus.

Seeing God in nature around usHyssop

There are many brands of moisturisers and cleansers in the market today. But do you know how people in the Bible cleansed themselves or treated their injuries? One herb used in the Bible for the cleansing of plague and leprosy was

hyssop - a hardy plant with purple flowers. More importantly, it was used during the Jewish Passover (Exodus 12: 22) to sprinkle the blood of the lamb on the door posts. This act foretold the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and the cleansing of our sins. So not only was the hyssop used to cleanse bodily ailments, it was also used symbolically to represent the cleansing of our souls!

BalmIn Bible times, there were no antiseptic solutions for wounds. Instead, they applied balm, the gum of a special tree. This gum was both fragrant and very expensive. However, when it came to God’s wrath, Jeremiah warned the daughter of Egypt that no medicine would cure her, not even balm, when God was their enemy (Jeremiah 46: 10-11) . So let us always remember that God is the only one who is our source of

healing and cleansing.

Have you ever wondered how your cells get energy? Well, it’s actually thanks to the ‘power plants’ present in EVERY single cell. These power plants are amazing structures called mitochondria. They change oxygen and nutrients(from the food you eat) into energymolecules. Without this energy, you wouldn’t be able to work, play or grow. The mitochondria has special molecules called DNA that tell it what to do. The DNA in mitochondria is passed down from mother to child. That means your mitochondria comes from your mom! Your mom can also give you many

other great things. She can love you unconditionally, take care of you, and most importantly, teach you. In the Bible, for example, Timothy’s grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, taught him all about God (2Timothy 1:5). So, next Mother’s Day, give your mom a hug for all the wonderful things she’s done for you, and continue in the things you have learnt about the Bible and God (2Timothy 3:14-15).

In Matthew 22:38-40, the first and second g r e a t e s t commandments involve Love- to God and mankind. We can learn from the example of sister Sek Choo and her sister with regard to how they showed love to their late father. From the time that he survived a major artery repair operation in 2003, till his promotion to glory on 10th April 2020, he had suffered from multiple conditions with at least ten “time bombs” in his body. In 2016, he was further weakened after a serious infection. All this meant that he required constant care and tending to. One sister took care of their father while the other worked to support the family and in 2016, both took care of him full time because of

his weakened condition which required them to take care of him day and night. They researched on his conditions, sourced for medical supplies, assisted him in

his daily routines, brought him for dialysis and medical appointments, made

him comfortable, and nourished him

physically and spiritually.Such a life was demanding but they learnt to draw

strength from God and served in His love. Sister Sek Choo believes that as Christians, we ought to live out God’s Word, and honouring our parents is one such way. (Exodus 20:12) May we also learn to love others and honour our parents as these gems have done!

As a Scottish missionary to Africa, Robert Moffat braved the harsh c l i m a t e , hostile tribal warriors and predators like lions and leopards. Over his 50-year ministry, the sounds of chanting in rituals were gradually replaced by the sweet melodies of worship hymns. Many were baptised. Robert learnt the native language so well that he was able to translate the entire New Testament into the language. Robert was just four years old when he professed faith in Christ. However, the church leaders did not believe that such a young boy could truly understand the gospel. During a church service, when the ushers were collecting the offerings, Robert asked the

usher to lay the offering bag on the floor. His family being poor, Robert had no money to give, but in an amazing act of faith,

he stepped on the bag, declaring: ‘I have

no money to give to God, but I give Him myself.’ Robert Moffat’s faith and dedication to God would be celebrated for decades after his death. His story teaches us that we should never u n d e re s t i m at e what God can do in someone’s life, no matter how young.
