What is Chinese Re!exology?

Energy Meridians



•  12 primary meridians for internal organs •  Three of these play key role in women’s

health: 1.  Kidney 2.  Spleen 3.  Liver

TCM Meridian System



Importance of Yin and Yang

•  Yin and Yang are cornerstone of TCM theory and diagnosis

•  Yin: female, cold, dark, earth •  Yang: male, warm/hot, light,

heaven



TCM Diagnosis and Treatment

•  Disharmony of yin yang balance is root cause of all disease

•  Determine which meridians are out of balance, interplay of disharmonies and then treat



•  “Master Control” points for harmonizing energy !ow

BEFORE YOU BEGIN REFLEXOLOGY



•  Re!exology is very safe, especially the “gentle” style; complementary with other treatments

•  Do one hour before or after eating •  Drink lots of water •  Preferable to abstain from alcohol

•  Don’t practice while pregnant, especially "rst trimester

•  CAUTION for acute heart condition, diabetes or compromised immune system

KIDNEY POINT



•  Kidney channel is considered “the root of life” and mother of all Qi

•  Kidneys control the reproductive system •  Kidney essence, Jing, governs quality of eggs •  Kidney Qi, blood and uterus related to

fertilization and carrying pregnancy

•  Kidney Qi is depleted by overwork, stress, pushing yourself too hard

•  Excessive exercise, over-training •  For men excessive sexual activity •  Poor nutrition, lack of quality rest

•  Live a balanced life •  Nurture yourself •  Get rest, sleep, good food and moderate

•  Soles of both feet •  Imagine horizontal line dividing

foot in half horizontally –  From tip of big toe to base of heel

•  Imagine vertical line dividing foot in half vertically

•  Left foot: Kidney point in top left quadrant –  Right foot: Kidney point in top

right quadrant

•  Imagine another horizontal line following bottom of ball of foot

•  Kidney point is below this line (red) and above halfway line




•  About as wide as your thumb •  Place thumb on vertical line,

with two thirds of the thumb in top left quadrant and one third in top right quadrant of left sole

•  Spleen plays important role in digestion •  Spleen meridian is responsible for

"transformation of !uids” •  Weak spleen qi = low energy and can lead to

accumulation of !uids, weight gain, lumps, nodules

•  Overthinking and worrying too much •  Poor nutrition, lack of protein •  Irregular eating habits •  Eating too much at once •  Cold foods

•  Stores the blood and aids in proper circulation of blood

The Liver – TCM Perspective



•  Anger, stress, fear, frustration •  Repressing emotions •  Fried foods, fatty foods, alcohol, excessive

caffeine, excessive dairy

•  Don’t repress feelings of anger and frustration •  Express yourself, then let it go •  Movement, exercise, e.g. tai chi, walking,

ACUPRESSURE POINTS FOR PMS



•  For relief of menstrual cramps •  Follows along Spleen and Gallbladder

meridians •  Gallbladder is associated with Liver •  Spleen meridian along inside of leg •  Gallbladder meridian along outside of leg

Chinese Re!exology PMS “Point”




•  Place knuckles of index "ngers on either side of one leg

•  Inside of leg just above ankle bone

•  Outside of leg just below the knee




•  Do one leg at a time •  Press and follow leg bone •  Inner leg: Go UP •  Outer leg: Go DOWN •  Repeat



•  For water retention, cramps, vaginal discharge and pain

•  Three Yin meridians pass through this point: Spleen, Kidney and Liver

•  CAUTION: Do not press during pregnancy; stimulates labour

•  Cold near uterus causes contractions, cramps •  Liver affects the uterus:

–  Stores blood and nourishes uterus –  Stagnant Liver Qi can cause painful periods

•  Blood stasis can cause painful periods, scanty or irregular periods, "broids

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER



•  Kidneys – 60 seconds each foot •  Spleen – 60 seconds on left foot •  Liver – 60 seconds on right foot •  PMS Points – as needed

Recommended Time to Massage



•  Breast – 30 seconds each foot •  Pituitary Gland – 30 to 60 twists each foot •  Ovary – 30 to 60 seconds each foot •  Uterus – 30 to 60 seconds each foot

Recommended Time to Massage



•  Total routine should take about 10 minutes •  Massage twice a week •  Drink water •  1 hour away from meals •  Abstain or minimize consumption of alcohol •  No more ice cream!

Putting It All Together



•  Immediately: qi will start to !ow better –  Feet may feel warm –  If very aware, may notice body feels lighter

•  2 to 3 weeks, feet will feel less sensitive •  6 to 8 weeks, subtle changes in body •  Acute shifts faster; chronic takes longer
