China Ski Industry White Book 2017Annual Report

Preface

Time flies in the blink of an eye! Now we are introducing already the third edition of the

White Book , in the same rush and with the same uneasy feeling. I sincerely thank you all

for having high expectation on the White Book, and also I am sorry for collecting data in

the most primitive way. Each time only at the last moment we can decide whether a piece

of data should be used or not in order to accurately reflect the situation.

What does ski mean to China? What do Chinese skiers look like? How do Chinese ski

resorts differ? Where shall Chinese ski industry go from here? As the 2022 Winter

Olympics is approaching, the world is wondering and so am I. We are all waiting for

answers that are known to exist.

Snow keep falling and transforming, and people keep moving. There are passers-by and

there are returnees. When the ground is blanketed by snow, all will be settled with peace

and that is how future looks like in my eyes.

In 2017, I choose to return, to return to the most original and true feeling, to return to the

place where I started from. In 2018, we shall start the journey again with courage and

inspiration, with belief and firm determination.

Never forget your mission and never forget where you started from. This is the mark left

by the era in the snow.

Let’s have a bright vision of the future and go for it

Winter is coming, so is the great era that belongs to us.

We would like to take the opportunity to express sincere gratitude to every industry

insiders for offering data that makes White Book as accurate and objective as possible,

and also thank following teams for joining in the White Book research work: the research

team led by YIN Zhenhua of Beijing Carving Ski, Beijing Mountain Development &

Antaeus Ski, China Mobile Chongli Company, A Complete Collection of China Ski

Resort, Huaxuezoo, GOSKI, Huabei, Ledian Ski, China Ski Industry Alliance,

Longzhixun Consulting, Reuters, etc.

In the end, I specially thank all leaders of district committee and district government led

by WANG Biao, secretary of district committee, ZHAO Zan, district head from Chongli

District, Zhangjiakou City, and people offer opinions and suggestions on White Book.

Your seriously reading, criticizing, correction and advises have been be very helpful.

And I also would like to thank ISPO Beijing APSC and Mr. Laurent Vanat from Swiss for

offering public issuing platform for the White Book.

Only Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Shanghai, Jiangxi, Xizang and Hainan have not established ski resorts yet among 34 provincial administrative regions, a situation that is the same as last year Hebei province added 12 new ski resorts --- the largest increase among all provinces. As above mentioned, the number of ski resorts and skier visits include indoor ski resorts, while with the exclusion of artificial ski resorts like dry skiing and ski simulators, etc., and skier visits due to that. There are 9 recently opened indoor ski resorts among the newly-added 57 ski resorts. At the end of year 2017, number of indoor ski resorts opened in China has reached 21.

Figure 1-3: Statistics of Indoor Ski Resorts Operated in China

In addition, based on public information, there are 19 indoor ski resorts that have the planning and design completed and are in the process of construction, 11 among which will start operation in 2018, and others are to be in operation in 2019. Among indoor ski resorts that are in operation, Harbin Wanda Yuxue Leyuan is the most representative one, which has been officially in business since Jun. 30, 2017 and is the biggest indoor ski resort in the world. It has made the achievement of having 200 thousand skier visits in 2017 alone.

2. Classification Statistics of Ski Resorts

Based on the actual situation of the ski resorts in China, ski resorts are grouped by three different perspectives: the core target groups, the vertical drop and the area of the ski slopes. The statistics are presented below: 2.1 Classification by core target group

If classified by core target group, the domestic ski resorts is divided into three categories: one-time experience ski resorts, day trip ski resorts and destination resorts. The proportion of these three kinds of snow resorts in all snow fields is 75%, 22% and 3% respectively.

2.2 Classification by Vertical Drop

The vertical drop of the ski resort is an important indicator for the resource-scale of a ski resort. According to the actual vertical drop of the trails in the ski resorts, we classify the domestic ski resorts according to the following three categories: the number of the ski resort with more than 300 meters vertical drop-trails is 24 (Figure 1-5), vertical drop of 100-300 meters is 138, and vertical drop of less than 100 meters is 543. The proportion of the classified snow resorts according to the vertical drop is shown in Figure 1-5.

The developed ski resorts with the first two vertical drop are all natural snow resort without ropeways. Those resorts Rely on mobile devices, such as snowmobile, groomer (snowcat) and helicopters to help the skiers to reach top of the mountain. The other 22 resorts all have cableways. 2.3 Classification by Area of Slopes

Area of slopes is another important indicator to measure the size of the ski area. In 2017, besides newly built snowfields, the existing snow fields such as Beidahu, Miaoxiangshan in Changchun, Wanlong, Fulong and Genting in Chongli, have also stepped up the expansion of the resort.

Total 703 At the end of 2017, there are 28 snow resorts with area of slopes of more than 30 hectares, accounting for 3.98% of the total snow fields. The list of resorts is shown in Table 1-6. It is estimated that the total area of domestic ski slopes will be around 3,500 hectares.

China Ski Industry White Book 2017 Annual Report

11

Among them, the total number of ski slopes in the table listed 28 resorts will account for more than 40%. The total length of the domestic trails is more than 1000 km, and the total length of the trails of the above listed 28 ski resorts exceeds 500 km. 3. Facilities Statistics

3.1 Statistics of Elevating Facilities: Aerial Lifts & Magic Carpets

Elevating facilities determine the operational efficiency of the ski resort, and it’s the most important part for any resort. Nowadays the elevating facilities in China are mainly aerial lifts and magic carpets. “Is there any aerial lifts in the ski resort and how many aerial lifts?” is an important KPI indicator that measures the size and efficiency of the ski resort.

3.1.1 Aerial Lifts

Figure 1-6: Aerial lifts in Ski Resorts (2017)

At the end of 2017, the total number of operating aerial lifts in domestic ski resorts is 236, distributed in 145 ski resorts. Hebei, Heilongjiang, Jilin list on the top three with the number of 46, 39, 37 respectively. In the meantime, three provinces built 122 aerial lifts in total, accounting for 51.69% of all aerial lifts.

attention; • Ski brand Wed'ze of Decathlon has a strong growth tendency with the annual

increase of 30%.

Finally, I would like to share the statistics from Magic Ski School by the end of 2017 for reference. Branches and camps of Magic Ski School increased from 3 to 10 with the growth rate of 230%. There are 220 full-time certified coaches and 80 part-time certified coaches with the annual increase of 160%. Teaching staff number is 3100 in 2015, 10900 in 2016 and 23000 in 2017 with the annual growth of 110%. Teaching income is 9 million yuan with the annual increase of 210%. Teaching repurchase rate is 67%. Teaching conversion rate is 32%, up to the standard of 3 or 4.
