Day 1: Depart U.S. for Beijing, China

Day 2: Arrive Beijing We arrive in the Chinesecapital and transfer to our hotel. After time torelax we gather for a briefing on the journeyahead followed by dinner together at the hotel. D

Day 3: Beijing After time to rest this morn-ing, mid-day we begin our discovery of this2,000-year-old city at vast Tiananmen Square,and the Forbidden City, seat of imperial powerduring the Ming and Qing dynasties. Tonight wesavor a traditional Peking Duck dinner. B,D

Day 4: Beijing/Great Wall This morning wetour the splendid Temple of Heaven complex,where China’s rulers once worshipped. Afterlunch we walk on the Great Wall, the networkof ancient defense installations that stretchesalmost 4,000 miles from the East China Sea toCentral Asia. B,L

Day 5: Beijing This morning we enjoy a smallgroup highlight, as we ride rickshaws throughBeijing’s ancient back roads and alleys (hutongs)and enjoy a home visit, giving us a glimpse ofthe traditional communal lifestyle. Then we visitthe Summer Palace, the former royal retreat thatis now a lovely park. B,L

Day 6: Beijing/Xian We fly this morning toXian, a provincial backwater until the accidentaldiscovery of the Terra Cotta Warriors in 1974.Upon arrival we tour the impressive nine-mile citywall and moat, then enjoy a special dumplinglunch. Next: Shanxi Provincial History Museum,with an acclaimed collection of historic and culturalartifacts. Tonight we attend a Tang Dynasty showand dinner. B,L,D

Day 7: Xian Our day begins with a visit to the re-vered Wild Goose Pagoda (c. 652 AD). After lunchwe tour the museum housing the army of 7,000life-sized Terra Cotta Warriors that had lain buriedand forgotten for more than two millennia. B,L,D

Day 8: Xian/Chengdu We fly this morning toChengdu, where we visit the renowned GiantPanda Protection & Research Center, the onlysuch refuge in the world. B,L,D

Day 9: Chengdu/Lhasa Early today we fly toLhasa, Tibet’s capital and only major city. Sittingon a plateau between two Himalayan ridges, theChinese province of Tibet covers an area as largeas Western Europe. On the way to our hotel westop to visit with a Tibetan family in their home.Since the altitude here is approximately 12,000feet above sea level, we spend the remainder ofthe day acclimating. B,L,D

Day 10: Lhasa Our tour begins in the heart ofthe old city at Jokhang, Tibet’s holiest temple.Built in 647, Jokhang is an intriguing complex thatattracts pilgrims day and night. SurroundingJokhang is Barkhor, a plaza lined with chantingmonks, street performers, and vendors. Later wetour the summer palace of the Dalai Lamas atNorbulinka; tonight, we enjoy dinner at a localrestaurant. B,L,D

Day 11: Lhasa Opened to foreigners only since1984, Tibet is a profoundly spiritual place whereBuddhism has infused all aspects of life for 13 cen-turies. We see evidence of this at 17th-century PotalaPalace, with 1,000 rooms and 200,000 Buddhaimages, which we explore this morning. This after-noon we visit the vast Sera Monastery. B,L,D

Day 12: Lhasa/Chongqing We depart for theflight to Chongqing, where we visit the Stilwell

Museum commemorating WWII General JosephStilwell. Dinner tonight is at our hotel. B,L,D

Day 13: Chongqing/Dazu/Board ShipToday’s excursion features the Dazu Rock Carvingsdating back more than a millennium– and now aUNESCO World Heritage Site. These cliffsidecarvings reflect Buddhist teachings, tenets ofConfucianism, and local folklore. Tonight weboard our river ship and set sail downstream. B,L,D

Day 14: Yangtze Cruising – Shibaozhai orFengdu Prized for its haunting natural beauty,the Yangtze is one of the world’s longest (3,600miles) and busiest rivers. This afternoon we visiteither the Red Pagoda in Shibaozhai, or the“ghost city” of Fengdu. B,L,D

Day 15: Yangtze Cruising – Qutang Gorge/Small Three Gorges/Wu Gorge/XilingGorge Today we pass through narrow QutangGorge, then board a small sampan for a cruisethrough the stunning Small Three Gorges,among the most spectacular sights of our trip.

On Day 11 we tour Tibet's Potala Palace, traditional seat of the Dalai Lamas, and UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day 16: Yangtze Cruising – Three GorgesDam/Shanghai After visiting the site of theimmense Three Gorges Dam we continue on toYichang, where we disembark and transfer tothe airport for the flight to Shanghai, the “Parisof the East.” B,L,D

Day 17: Shanghai Our day begins amidst thescenic pools and walkways of 16th-century YuYuan Garden, one of the few remaining vestigesof old Shanghai. We also visit the Bund, thebroad avenue that’s a potent symbol ofEuropean influence; and the Children’s Palace,where young students study the arts. Tonightwe attend a Chinese acrobatic show. B,L

Day 18: Shanghai This morning we visit therenowned Shanghai Museum, with its priceless

Dear UCLA Alumni and Friends,

Travel in the spring of 2010 to discover the highlights of China, including the mysteries of Tibet and thegrandeur of the Yangtze River. Our small group will be comprised of no more than 24 guests and willbe exclusive to UCLA alumni and friends.

Our journey begins in 2000-year-old Beijing, site of Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Templeof Heaven, and of course the legendary Great Wall. Next, we fly to Xian where we’ll see one of thegreatest archaeological discoveries of recent time: the intact life-size army of nearly 8,000 terra-cottawarriors, horses and chariots. We'll visit the renowned Giant Panda Protection & Research Center, beforetraveling to Lhasa in the Chinese province of Tibet. With three days here we’ll have time to acclimatizeto the high altitude and explore the city’s sacred temples and its vast Potala Palace. Then we'll relaxduring a three-night cruise on the Yangtze River, one of the world’s longest and busiest rivers. A high-light is the monumental Three Gorges Dam. Our tour concludes in dazzling Shanghai, a city thatepitomizes 21st-century China.
