Initiation

In order to encourage Children Literacy of the new immi-grants’ family, Santa Maria Community Service Center is seeking toprovideakidsreadingroomintheofficebuilding.TheSantaMaria Community Service Wellness Center is located 3310 Warsaw Avenue, East Price Hill. The community has a tradition being the entry port of Central American immigrants. Unfortunately, a lot of these new families came from the rural area of their country with very limited literacy of English, or their own language. With the International Welcome Center of the community coming into the building,theorganizationisseekingtoconverthalfoftheofficeto a kids reading corner. The intention is to encourage children to read or create images while they are waiting for their parents and introduce Literacy to the new comers. Considering the age and background of potential users, the team is looking to insert some of the Central American elements into the art themes while being children-friendly. The total available budget will be $1,000 dollars, including purchases of new furniture and painting materials for the interior art implementation. The organization is looking to building the reading corner by community volunteer projects.

The team has suspected existing furniture that has an interesting art taste and can be used as furniture in the proposed plans. Fur-thermore, the team decided to encourage building more of these furniture using the exact same size and appearance for the pur-pose of consistency and cost cutting.

Art Theme 1Trains

This theme is incorporating the image of a train and pictures frames of displaying of children artwork as windows of the carts. The desk is going to be pieces of boards attached to the wall representing the connector of three different carts of the train. The ceiling of the carts is going to be convered to bookshelves that attached to the wall.Moreover, this theme also highlights the nature at the background to enrich the image and add a peaceful feeling to the room. Children are encourage to express what they have observed during their trav-el here by drawings or words.

Art theme 2Trees and Backyard

This theme is incorporating the image of a Latin American look-ing garden, with well-grown trees and vivid color bricks. This theme contains most art taste of Latin American culture amount the three with the bright red color of the bricks and the trees. The art theme brings them back to where they grew up. More-over, the theme is going to insert picture frames as windows of the building and the children are encouraged to draw pictures expressing what they uesd to see in their backyard at home or what they are hoping to see during their new life here.

Art theme 3 City Buildings

This theme is incorporating the image of American cities with cluster of buildings. Again, in this theme, picture frames are going to be inserted as windows and some of the windows are going to be converted as attached to wall bookshelves. The theme is going to give potential users a feeling of modern city living in the western civilization.
