Little Fox Music Box is an interactive songbook for
young children, with three classic songs to enjoy.
The songs are accompanied by interactive char-
acters, on a visual canvas created by Oscar-nomi-
nated designer Heidi Wittlinger. These characters
put on their own performance when tapped, as
do a select number of scenic monuments and
features. If you would prefer to hear your little
one practicing their rhythm and not their whine,
Little Fox Music Box is just the app you need!
Sesame Street has always been famous for teaching
children the alphabet. The cutest character from
the hit television show, Elmo, is here to help your
youngster learn their ABCs. This app makes learn-
ing the alphabet educational, interactive and lots
of fun to do. All the while Elmo is there to give your
child a helping hand and plenty of encouragement.
And, when the individual letters are learnt, it's
time to sing along to the alphabet song with Elmo
and continue to learn while having a great time.

Toca Hair Salon

Age Range: 5–8

Princess Fairy Tale Maker helps to build a child’s
early perception of narrative and storytelling. Its
developer, Duck Duck Goose, have won more that
10 Parents’ Choice awards for their stellar work.
In the game children have two modes to choose
from; story creation and colouring in. From mysti-
cal unicorns to swashbuckling pirate ships, the
options are endless for both boys and girls. What-
ever they choose it is sure to be a great time!
This sequel from the trusted developers at Toca
begins with a tap on the bubble play button
before choosing a character to style. Once in
the chair the customer is at the mercy of your
child’s creative take on salon chic. From scissors
to curling irons, to straighteners, there are plenty
of tools to choose from. A range of accessories
are also available to increase the individuality
of the character. With another happy customer
styled to perfection it’s time to send them over
to the Photo Booth to save the look forever!
Storylines
Scribblenauts

Age Range: 5–8

This creative app will have your kids laughing in
the back of the car as they work together to create
their own storyline. The game is perfect for groups
of children rather than just one or two, because of
its collaborative nature. The first player thinks of a
saying, then the second player draws a picture to
represent the saying. The other players, without
seeing the phrase, add a caption to the picture.
At the end everyone gets to see how the original
phrase was completely changed. Storylines is a
really fun app to play that gives your child the
opportunity to learn common phrases, write and
draw, and improve their collaborative social skills.
Scribblenauts is an adventure game starring
Maxwell. Our young hero is armed with adjectives
and nouns as he walks through an exciting world.
Children have to think of words in order to use
Maxwell’s many tools of survival. Your child will be
able to summon a dragon, call on a caveman and
resurrect vampires! The levels are accompanied by
really strong graphics by 5th Cell and Iron Galaxy
Studios. Those that are using an iPad or iPhone can
benefit from the voice recognition feature. There
is massive scope for creativity within the app and
the developers have clearly put a lot of effort into
making this game as good as it can be.
Granny Smith Math Doodles

Mediocre Games have created one of those ‘just
one more try games‘. Granny Smith is trying to get
her apples back from a young boy on roller skates.
Everyone’s new favourite grandma is flying down
different hills with her skates on! As long as Granny
Smith is keeping up with the naughty apple-stealer
she is just fine. All of these escapades take place
in a number of different levels, including colourful
zoos, sludgy sewers and quirky office buildings.
Granny Smith is the classic fast-paced game that
holds a child’s attention for the entire journey.
Math Doodle is an award winning app that has
come up with a creative way of teaching children
mathematics. The app consists of three games that
all offer different ways of coming to terms with the
subject that many children struggle with. This non-
traditional approach comes in the form of creative
counting systems like Spanish tally marks, binary
and braille. Other games are offered as puzzles
and work your child’s brain in more ways than one.
This app is a fine example of how technology is
opening up new ways of learning for children.
Clueless Crossword
The Khan Academy

Age Range: 9–12

Age Range: 12+
www.khanacademy.org
Clueless Crossword Puzzle is an interesting take
on the classic crossword, with every square on
the board covered in numbers, rather than being
blank. In order to complete the board, players
must identify which letter represents the number
on the board. If the board reads 21-A-T, then your
child has to work out what the 21 represents. If
they choose C and they are correct then all of the
21s on the board will then change to Cs. There are
three game modes: Classic, Blitz and Mini. This app
introduces children to the premise of crosswords in
a simple and interesting way.
This app features a diverse selection of tutorials
for all ages. Expert instructors from a variety of
disciplines have contributed to the Khan Academy.
More that 3,000 videos are now available through
Khan Academy on subjects including history,
finance, business and chemistry. Sal Khan came
up with the concept in order to help his younger
cousin better understand his school subjects. His
Youtube tutorials caught on and today the Khan
Academy has grown into an educational network
that your child can benefit from. This app is perfect
for when your children are away from school and
need to stay updated with coursework. The Khan
Academy is an exceptional tool and is 100% free!
