and experts to discuss how to incorporate evidence-based school discipline practices into school accountability and performance, and whether to reform Indiana law to discourage or even prohibit suspension and expulsion for attendance related matters. 15 minutes will be reserved for questions and answers.

12:50-2:10 Workshop – How status offenses lead to the criminalization of children and the
school to prison pipeline. Legislators join state and local juvenile justice officials in a discussion regarding how current laws may lead to the criminalization of youth with certain status offenses (offenses that would not be violations as an adult). The panel will discuss the use of the valid court order exception to detain or incarcerate repeat status offenders—specifically those charged with truancy and runaway offenses. The panel will also examine the lack of a minimum age for juvenile delinquency and detention, and how school-based referrals may be contributing to early entry into the juvenile justice system. 15 minutes will be reserved for questions and answers.
