Gowrie Training Children’s Workshops 2017

Available for Vacation Care and After School Care see inside for details

Workshop overview

Recommended age group: This workshop is suitable for children between the ages of 7-12, although younger children can also be catered for with higher levels of supervision. Size of group: This activity involves an element of risk due to the heat build up from the pyrography tool, therefore working in groups of six children at a time allows for any risks to be substantially minimised due to the higher level of supervision.

Space requirements: Due to the smoke emitted from the burning of wood, it is required for this workshop to be conducted in an outdoor (preferably undercover) area providing ventilation and protection from the sun and rain. Our pyrography tools also require access to a power point within 20m of the designated working area.

Workshop structure

This workshop will begin with a group of six to eight children (depending on ages) at a time being provided with a safety brief, before practicing the art of pyrography. Children will be supervised by the consultant and an educator from the participating service and once children have confidence in using the pyrography tool effectively they will have access to a collection of driftwood pieces to create and burn their own designs. Once groups have completed burning their designs they will have the opportunity to turn their finished items into a mobile or keyring, drilling holes into the driftwood and filing and sanding to the desired finish before taking their creations home. It is essential for educators to actively participate in this workshop to ensure children are able to complete their projects in the available time-slot.

Pyrography is the art of decorating wood by burning a design into the surface using a specialised pyrography tool.

During this two hour workshop we will provide all of the materials needed for children to burn their own designs onto pieces of driftwood which can be used to create a mobile or key ring.

Workshop overview

Recommended age group: This workshop is suitable for children between the ages of 4-12. Size of group: This workshop can cater for larger groups of up to 18 children at a time, where they will be guided how to use the tools provided safely and effectively.

Space requirements: Due to the dust and waste produced from children carving Hebel, it is necessary for this workshop to be conducted in an outdoor (preferably undercover) area that allows ventilation and protection from the sun and rain. Children will also require access to tables, benches or structures to carry out their work on.

Workshop structure This workshop begins with our facilitator providing children with an overview of the workshop and discussing the safe use of tools and techniques for carving/shaping Hebel. The children are then provided with a block of their own to work on. During this workshop children will have access to the use of rasps, files, cold chisels (not sharp) and hammers. Hand saws and hand drills will also be made available to competent children. The children will also be required to wear dust masks and eye protection to prevent breathing in dust particles and getting dust in their eyes. Dust masks and safety glasses will be provided by our facilitator. It is essential for educators to actively participate in this workshop to ensure children are able to complete their projects in the available time-slot.

HEBEL CARVING

Hebel is a lightweight, aerated concrete product that can be cut, chiseled, carved, drilled and sanded using real tools.

During this two hour workshop we will provide all of the tools and materials needed for children to create their own sculptural works of art to take home.

Workshop overview

Recommended age group: This workshop is suitable for children between the ages of 4-12. Size of group: Our facilitator can cater for groups of 12 children at a time, guiding them to carry out a series of specific tasks and experiments whilst integrating learning opportunities throughout the session. Each child will also be able to take home a project they have completed during this session.

Space requirements: The children will access resources such as water, oil, food colouring, vinegar and a number of other potentially messy items, therefore providing a space that can be easily cleaned from any spills is essential. An outdoor, undercover area with access to 4 x tables is ideal for this workshop to allow children enough room to experiment.

Workshop structure

This workshop will begin with 3 groups of four children, with each group having access to a variety of resources set out by our consultant. Children will then be free to explore these materials, experimenting with mixing, observing reactions, solubility and texture. Following this, the children will be guided through a number of exciting scientific experiments, some of which they will have the opportunity to take home. Throughout this time children and educators will be asked to ensure their workspace is kept tidy, washing and rinsing used items ready for the next group of children. It is essential for educators to actively participate in this workshop to ensure children are able to complete their projects in the available time-slot.

EXPLORING SCIENCE CONCEPTS

This workshop provides children with the opportunity to work in small groups to undertake a number of engaging science experiments involving water, colour, solubility and texture using a wide variety of equipment.

Workshop overview

Recommended age group: This workshop is suitable for children between the ages of 5-12. Size of group: This workshop can cater for up to 36 children and will require the assistance of educators to ensure children are allocated tasks that will encourage involvement in the project.

Space requirements: Ideally this workshop requires access to an outdoor undercover area providing children with enough space to construct two Billy-carts for their service.

Workshop structure This workshop will involve children working alongside adults to construct two Billy-carts for their service. During this process children will have access to hand saws, hand drills, hammers and spanners to complete these projects. Once groups have completed the Billy-carts services have the opportunity to paint and decorate the Billy-carts at their own expense (this is not included in the workshop) It is essential for educators to actively participate in this workshop to ensure children are able to complete their projects in the available time-slot.

Arrival time: Our Gowrie Training consultant will arrive at your venue approximately 20 minutes prior to the booked time slot, allowing time for setting up, meeting educators and talking to the children about the structure of the visit. Requirements of educators: Our workshops are designed for educators to join in the experience, to ask questions and learn whilst assisting children with their creations and carrying out supervision requirements. This process allows educators to build upon their existing skill sets and continue to develop their all important relationships with children. Some of our workshops can also generate mess from food colouring, Hebel dust/offcuts, etc. Therefore, educators/services/children are required to assist in the cleaning of resources throughout our workshops, allowing workshops to be carried out within the designated timeframe. Managing risk: Risk taking is an essential part of children’s play. Managing that risk is the key to providing opportunities that support growth and development and keep children safe from unreasonable risk and injury. The balancing of these two is vital for our children’s health and development. (Allen and Rapee, 2005 cited in Sanseter, E. and Kennair, L. 2011) Services are required to carry out a Risk Analysis, or Benefit Risk Analysis for this experience to ensure it is conducted in a safe and well managed environment. (Please see attached Benefit Risk Analysis example) Benefits to children’s learning: Children are building an awareness about their limits and capabilities Children are able to assess and make judgement about risk Children are learning to use real tools safely and with purpose Children are problem solving and being resourceful with the materials provided Children engage with curiosity and wonder Children are creative and inventive in their approaches Children build upon their confidence and independence

Risk analysis: National Law: Section 167 states: ‘An approved provider must ensure that every reason able precaution is taken to protect children from harm and from any hazard likely to cause injury. The service must have policies and procedures in place to support the protection of children from harm and hazards, including health and safety matters’

A number of the workshops outlined in this handbook present an element of risk and therefore require services to carry out a risk analysis to ensure any hazards that have the potential to cause children undue injury/harm have been identified, minimised or eradicated if required.

Children and young people both need to and want to engage in adventurous and challenging play where they can test themselves and build on their skills and abilities. Providing children with opportunities to encounter hazards and take risks within a controlled learning environment allows them to learn and recognise how to respond to, manage and assess risks for themselves, which is an essential part of growing up.

Unlike a conventional risk assessment, a Benefit Risk Analysis is the practice of weighing up the benefits and hazards associated with risky play and deciding upon an appropriate response from this information.

This approach to risk management takes into account the benefits to children when engaging in challenging play experiences, as well as the risks which:

- ensure an activity/experience is carried out safely. - allows opportunity to discuss this process with children, work colleagues and families. - sets clear guidelines for those involved, ensuring safety is paramount.

When conducting a Benefit Risk Analysis, it is vital that everyone playing a role in carrying out the activity/experience is involved in this process to ensure:

- everyone is aware of possible dangers and how to respond to these. - everyone has input into the procedure for carrying out the activity/experience safely. - everyone is aware of their specific roles and responsibilities. - everyone is aware of possible learning opportunities/benefits for children. - Education and Care National Law and Regulations have been adhered to.

BENEFIT RISK ANALYSIS

Individual services/organisations should have their own risk assessment processes in place in line with the Education and Care National Law and Regulations. For an example of what this may look like, please see the Benefit Risk Analysis form sample on the following page that is based on the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authorities (ACECQA’s) Excursion risk management plan.
