The anti-happy undergroundtritoothed hippo and his cohippodisagreed about forecasting theunderground weather so insteadthey got into their undergroundsubmarine and drove it in a semi-circle. As the duo drove their un-derground submarine the aquadog, a famous underground super-star, transported the anti-happyunderground tritoothed hippo andhis cohippo to the land above theunderground.

My multicolored pinkish-bluepet has duobows on each of herears. She was happily eatingmultichipped cookies. She made amistake and spilled the milk. Sothen she repoured the milk intothe polyspotted cup. Then shesemi-dipped her chocolate chipcookies and started to eat themnonstop. She was midway in her“eating the cookies the fastest”challenge when her friend came inand said those were her cookies!My pet said it was a misunder-standing and that the whole classgot cookies. After that her friendand she ate the cookies together.

My grandmother said she had apet worth multi-million dollars. Itold her that was impossible so sheinvited me over to her house. Iknew my grandma was a formerbiology student and loved animals,but what I saw when I walked inwas insane! It was a hexahorned ,trilegged, deca-eyed dog lookingright at me. The prehistoric-look-ing thing was looking right at me.The prehistoric-looking dogmarched back to his bed – whichcould be misjudged to be a throne– and started to drink water outof his semi-filled wine glass.

He iswriting a report on why the CatCouncil should intercept midwaya group of enemy submarinestransporting unfriendlies under-sea. He is thinking about the in-justice and how it was impossiblethat the Council had overlookedhis first report. When they read itthey disagreed, dismissing it asnonsense. He is writing anotherreport about anti-Cat beings, say-ing that they will use the atmo-sphere to send encoded messagesto each other and also saying thatthey will use a mind-controlledsinging superstar to defrost thetension between the beings andthe Dogs.

This week, the Burke Connection turnsover its pages to the youth and students.

We asked principals and teachers fromarea schools to encourage students to con-tribute their words, pictures and photos forour annual Children’s & Teens’ Issue.

The response as always was enormous.While we were unable to publish every piecewe received, we did our best to put togethera paper with a fair sampling of the submit-ted stories, poems, drawings, paintings,photographs and other works of art.

We appreciate the extra effort made byschool staff to gather the materials duringtheir busy time leading up to the holidays.We’d also like to encourage both schools andparents to mark their 2019 calendars forearly December, the deadline for submis-sions for next year’s Children’s & Teens’

Connection. Please keep us in mind as yourchildren continue to create spectacularworks of art and inspiring pieces of writingin the coming year.

The children’s issue is only a part of ouryear-round commitment to cover educationand our local schools. As always, the Con-nection welcomes letters to the editor, storyideas, calendar listings and notices of localevents from our readers. Photos and othersubmissions about special events at schoolsare especially welcome for our weeklyschools pages.

GiveI had a friend that loved to

win and she would win a lotand brag about it! She was verycompetitive but other thanbragging about her wins shewas pretty nice. Whenever shewould win not too many kidswould congratulate her becauseshe would already congratulateherself. One day she won firstplace and I got second. Out ofall people she definitelythought I wouldn’t say any-thing, but I told her “Good job!You deserve that and yourteachers are so proud of you.” Iwalked away, but I walkedaway knowing that she reallyappreciated what I said – be-cause no kid would say that toher and she would definitelynot have said that to me.

Thank YouThere are lots of things I’m

thankful for but one stands outthe most. For a long time I hatedto read. My mom had to begand plead to get me to pick upa book. She finally got tired ofthis and she made some strictrules on reading. The rulestated that my sister and I hadto read for thirty minutes a dayto earn our electronics on theweekend. I hated the rule butit forced me to read a lot morethan I did before. I think mymom is a secret genius becausenow I love to read and I thankher for that.

At myuncle’s house, before we ate, Iwas eyeballing him so hard thatmy eyeballs were going to fallout. And finally he said, “Walter,would you like to say theprayer?” I was screaming in myhead and I ate turkey so fastand so much and it was a greatThanksgiving.

I am very thankful for myramp on our Honda Odysseyvan. After my dad died, it wasso hard for my mom to load meinto our black car. I am thank-ful for my van because mywheelchair can fit in it. The vanwas made in Waynesboro, WV,2 � hours away from here. Iremember going to look at it.We got to test one of the rampvans that was there. My momgot locked in the van after I gotout. I thought it was funny. (Theman opened the ramp doormanually so she could get out.)

I have always had super thickhair and I have always had curlyhair. My hair was never thatthick pretty hair that would beshown on TV when women ad-vertise for shampoo. I never feltconfident about my hair be-cause it was different and noone had hair as thick as mine.Everyone had straight, thin hairthat was easy to put up in cutestyles.

In fourth grade, I took my hairout of a pony tail, but just whenI was about to put it back up, amom came up to me and said“No! Leave your hair down. Youare so lucky to have wavy hairthat no one else has. My daugh-ter is probably jealous!” Thatreally changed me. I feel moreconfident about my hair be-cause of her.

Find out about plans to widen Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) from four to six lanes between Route 29 (Lee Highway) and Route 123 (Ox Road). The proposed project design also includes an interchange at Popes Head Road and the future Shirley Gate Road extension, improvements to the existing trail in the Fairfax County Parkway right of way and construction of a new shared-use path to make the trail continuous within the project limits.
