When toddlers have play dates, territorial battles are bound to ensue. To foster sharing skills in young children, consider these 12 tips: 1. Start early. Children can’t cognitively grasp the concept of sharing until they reach the developmental age of 3 or 4, but parents should set the expectation and foster learning opportunities early on. 2. Show and tell. Children often imitate what they see others doing. When you have opportunities to share food, a toy or another activity with your child, talk about how you are sharing so he begins to associate the word with the action. 3. Pretend play. Imaginative play can provide powerful lessons in sharing. Place a puppet in each hand and have them discuss and act out sharing scenes. Then invite your child to join in. Tea parties and play kitchens are good platforms too. 4. Read books. Read children’s stories about sharing then talk about past experiences: “Do you remember when you shared your toy with Eli yesterday? That’s what the children

5. Talk it up. Before play dates remind your child how much fun it is

to play with his friends and tell him he will need to share his toys.

6. Stash special items. Have a designated basket to place special toys that don’t

come out during play dates. For some children, it will be

helpful to be part of the process; other kids won’t understand.

7. Have duplicates on hand. Having more than one of a given toy will allow

children to play alongside of and imitate one another. It may also avoid an altercation.

8. Build in cooperative activities. Group activities such as drawing, finger painting,

Playdough or blowing bubbles can be used to teach sharing skills. As the children participate in these activi-ties, talk about sharing and how well they are playing together.

9. Include adult interaction. From time to time it may be helpful if you participate

in your child’s group play so you can support him in being kind and sharing. It may even stop a squabble.

10. Promote with praise. When you see your child sharing, bring it to his

attention. Kids want to please their parents so be sure to offer plenty of praise.

11. Set up sharing situations. Create opportunities for your child to develop

empathy and sharing skills. Have him help you make a batch of cookies then hand them out to his friends. Or encourage him to draw a picture or make a card for a friend.

12. Address major misdemeanors. If your child grabs a toy while playing with a friend,

tell him he must give it back and wait for his turn to play with it. Offer an alternative toy as a distraction. If it turns into a tantrum, remove your child from the situation and sit next to him until he calms down. If one child hurts another over a toy, remove it from the play area.

Networking 101 for Moms By Christa Melnyk Hines

Whether you are a newly minted mom, new to your community or feeling isolated for another reason, you may wonder how to connect with other moms. Parenting in isolation without moral support is lonely and emotionally debilitating. One of the most important ways to take care of yourself (and by extension your family) is to maintain a thriving social network that provides a healthy dose of physical, mental, and emotional support.

Why support matters.

Isolation can contribute to feelings of depression. According to a Gallup poll, stay-at-home-moms are at greater risk for depression than mothers who work. And, PostPartum Support International reports that one in eight women suffers from postpar-tum depression. Just a short burst of time spent with friends can boost a woman’s oxytocin levels, a natural hormone that decreases stress and anxiety.

Join a mothers’ group. In the “Better Mom, Better World” research study

commissioned on behalf of MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) International by the Barna Group in 2010, researchers found that mothers believe they are more optimistic and resilient to life’s daily stresses and occasional crises when surrounded by a community of support.

Moms’ groups come in a variety of sizes, phi-losophies and commitment levels. From faith-based organizations and moms of multiples’ clubs to attach-ment parent and stay-at-home only groups, options abound. Shop around to find a group that fits your

personality and parenting style. Visit the group as a guest. Ask the membership director questions like: • How often does the group meet?• Does the group schedule moms-only events?• If mom-only activities are scheduled during the day, is childcare provided?• What types of play groups and activities does the group plan? • How does the group support members? (For example, educational speakers? Meals for moms of new babies?)

Schedule activities. Losing yourself in the day-to-day rotation of feed-

ings, naps, baths and playtime may be fine for awhile. However, injecting your calendar with a sprinkling of activities throughout the week for both you and your child will energize you, give you something to look forward to and help you feel connected to the world outside your home.

Page 9: Childcare Preschool Finder 2015

8 Our Kids | Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2015 Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2015 | OurKidsSanAntonio.com 9

Not sure where to begin? Check with your local library and bookstore for story

hours and seek out “Mommy and Me” groups which run the gamut from physical activities to musical education. If you work full-time, talk to other working moms about meeting up at the park or indoor play area for a short weekend playdate.

Click into social media. Still in your pjs at 3:30 in the afternoon after being up

all night with your colicky baby or a sick child? During the toughest times of parenthood, we can find comfort know-ing others can relate and that we aren’t alone. Thanks to social media like Facebook, Pinterest, MeetUp.com and mommy blogs, you can click into the land of the living without feeling the need to put clean clothes on or even brush your teeth!

Get active. Schedule time for an exercise class when your spouse

is home or join a gym that offers quality childcare. Not only are fitness classes a fun way to get in shape, you’ll feel mentally refreshed, more patient, and more positive in general. And the more you go, the more you’ll get to know the other participants, which will make you feel more accountable about showing up. (Check with your local Department of Education for tips on finding a gym with reputable childcare.)

If a gym is out of the budget, find a friend or two to walk with a few times a week, either around a park, the neighborhood or a mall on inclement-weather days. As your children grow older, schedule time during or at the end of the walk for them to play at a park or indoor play area.

Share your talents. You may feel tempted to push your personal interests

aside due to overwhelming family demands. Negotiate time with your spouse to pursue your hobbies and other interests. Share your interests by inviting friends to join you for a gardening or cooking class or to start a book club.

Create a calendar. You write everyone else’s appointments on your cal-

endar.  Take yourself seriously, too. Honor your personal needs by making appointments with yourself, including fitness classes, walks with friends, moms’ meetings, dinner with a friend, classes you’ve signed up for, and so on. Sure, sometimes a sick child will throw a wrench into your plans, but isn’t flexibility one of the first lessons moms learn? When necessary, share your appointments with your spouse so he isn’t caught unaware.

Eight Good Reasons to Read Aloud to Your Child

Good parents know they should read to their children. It’s the right thing to do. But life gets busy and schedules are full. Sometimes it’s easier to just tuck them into bed and be done with the day. But studies of best practices leading to aca-demic success agree: reading aloud to children is the single most important activity you can do to maximize eventual success in school. So if you want your child to succeed in school, you really do want to spend lots of time reading aloud to them.

And, what’s not to like? Sitting side by side with your chil-dren, spending quality time with a good book or two gives both parents and kids a chance to relax together and bond. And don’t forget that a good read aloud includes taking a “picture walk” first and talking about the ins and outs of the story as you go. It’s not just a one way activity; conversation about the books keeps it a two way venture.

You’ll be surprised at all the learning benefits your children will gain without any conscious instruction. They’ll pick up all kinds of information, knowledge and skills as they hear lots of good stories, poems and explore non-fiction books about the real world.

Here are eight good reasons you should amp up the read aloud sessions.

1Reading good books is an enjoyable experience for children. Pleasurable reading times motivate your child

to want to read on his or her own.

2Quality books provide your children with valuable background knowledge. They will learn about people,

places and things beyond their current experience.

3Reading builds vocabulary. Your child will know and use more words, both in speaking and later in reading

and writing.

4When you read aloud to kids, you become their role model for literacy. Who doesn’t want to be a hero?

5Reading encourages a child’s imagination to expand. Together you’ll explore ideas, people, places and times

beyond your own home and community.

by Jan Pierce

Page 11: Childcare Preschool Finder 2015

10 Our Kids | Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2015 Childcare & Preschool Finder June 2015 | OurKidsSanAntonio.com 11

6Reading builds logic and problem-solving skills. The characters and their adventures will draw your child into

examining choices and behaviors in real life. And, your child will grow in understandings of social interactions and relationships too.

7Read aloud times build concentration and focus. They enable children to build longer attention spans and increased

memory retention.

8Reading and exposure to a variety of books will increase communication skills as you discuss each book with your

child.

Reading aloud to children from the time they’re born is something you can do to improve your child’s chances for success in school. And it doesn’t cost a thing but your time. You’ll enjoy quality time with your child and your child will have increased opportunity to excel in learning. It’s a win-win situation.

What is Background Knowledge and Why Does my Child Need It?

Background knowledge is the information a child already knows when he or she enters school or before studying a given subject. For example, if a child has read books and seen pictures of jungle animals, he’ll be better prepared to study about them than a child who has never seen or heard of them. The child with exposure to the habitat of the jungle, the animals who live there, the food chains and so forth, will learn more in depth than others. And books are just one way to gain background knowledge. Other ways might be through pictures, videos, field trips, discussions with others, etc. Background knowledge gives your child a learning advantage in the following ways:

■■ It makes learning easier.■■ It makes remembering easier.■■ It improves reading comprehension.■■ It improves reading speed.■■ It frees working memory to be able to learn even more.■■ It increases accuracy of inferences made.■■ It improves problem-solving abilities.

Seeking an early education program for your child? Invest some time in your search and know what ques-tions to ask to ensure a positive preschool experience for your child.

“The first five years of life are the absolute most essen-tial for a child’s development,” says Bev Adams, assistant professor and department chair of Early Childhood Development at Germanna Community College. “Trying to choose (a program) by reading a handbook and then going and visiting for an hour and making that choice is not a good idea. It’s one of the most critical decisions that you are going to make for your child.”

Long-term benefits.Quality early education prepares children to transition

successfully into elementary school, with studies indicat-ing that children are less likely to repeat grades or require special education. Early education can also nurture skills like self-esteem and self-confidence, which are necessary to succeed in the transition from preschool to kindergar-ten--more so than knowing letters and numbers.

“Other areas early childhood education support is teaching socialization skills, emotional maturity and

improved sensory motor skills,” says Becky Bergman, program director for Little Sunshine’s Playhouse & Preschool, a daycare and preschool with franchises across the country.

Beginning the search. While referrals from other parents are a good starting

point, personal observations are vital. Seek a program that fits your child’s personality and disposition and decide what you would like her to experience during her time away from home.

Make appointments to observe and interview licensed programs that interest you. Consider the following factors:

Environment.Attractive decor is nice, but notice what activities

the children engage in and if the environment feels safe, secure and healthy.

“Look for any common safety hazards and observe sanitary measures, diaper changing procedure, foul smells and cleanliness,” Bergman says.

Throughout the center, you should hear children

talking and see them playing in different areas of the classroom.

“A quality preschool program understands that play is essential to a child’s life, to their experiences, to their positive growth and development. They not only accommodate play, they encourage it, they plan for it,” Adams says. “Young children don’t learn best through the teacher talking to them while they sit quietly in large group. Young children learn through their senses, through exploring, through discovering, through their activities.”

Experienced teachers.Seek experienced, warm-natured teachers trained in

early childhood development. Credentialed early educa-tion teachers understand how to nurture a child’s social emotional skills.

“Watch for positive, encouraging interaction between teachers and students,” Bergman says. “Additionally, I would observe classroom size and number of students per room.”

Group size.Licensed childcare centers must meet the state’s staff-

to-child ratio requirements. State requirements aside, you know your child best. Beware of programs where you have trouble finding the adult in a roomful of children.Even a highly trained teacher will struggle with providing the daily one-on-one attention and interaction that a young child needs in a crowded classroom.

Communication.Consider how the school provides information to you

about your child’s day-to-day activities and her progress. While some schools will provide a hand-out of the day’s activities, others take a more high-tech approach.

Little Sunshine’s, for example, uses a secure platform called LuvNotesTM to communicate with parents. Parents can log-in through the web or their smartphone to find out what activities are planned for the day, the lunch menu, as well as personalized daily reports and photos and videos of their child.

Trust your gut. From high-tech to no-frills, quality early education

programs come in a variety of shapes, sizes and amenities. While compiling your wish list, decide which items you aren’t willing to compromise on and don’t feel rushed into a decision you aren’t completely comfortable with.

By taking your time, asking questions and trusting your instincts about each program you observe, you are sure to find a high quality early education program that is just the right fit for your child.

The first twelve months with your baby are action packed. They are a time of rapid growth and learning. During this first year is the perfect time to use simple play activities to lay a great foundation for your baby’s future. Below are some fun ideas to get you started.

Simply You. “You are your baby’s favorite toy...” says Sheila

Bourgeois. Bourgeois is a program coordinator at a family resource center.  She says that you don’t need a lot of toys to support your child’s development. Whether you are singing, reading or making funny faces, your baby will be delighted. Occupational Therapist, Wanh Porter says that the key is to do all of these simple activities face to face. She also recommends copying what your baby does.  Developmental Targets: Social/Language and Cognitive. One month and up.

Singing Time.Babies love hearing the same songs sung to them many

times says public health nurse,  Shelley Shaughnessy.  Shaughnessy recommends doing simple action songs with your baby. Be sure to  bring your child’s hands in front of his face so that he can try out the actions too, reminds Shaugnessy. Pat- a- cake is a fun favorite. Developmental Targets: Social/Language and Cognitive. One month and up.

Bubble Play.Did you know that bubbles are great for body aware-

ness? Bourgeois explains that when bubbles pop on your baby’s body, it brings her attention to that area. Regardless of your baby’s age, she will enjoy watching you blow and pop bubbles says Bourgeois. You can also introduce simple words like “up” and “pop”.  Developmental

Targets: Cognitive, Gross Motor, Fine Motor and Social/Language. One month and up.

Reading Time. You can bring books to life for your baby with your

animated voice. With older babies, get books that they can hold and turn the pages of suggests Shaughnessy. She also recommends choosing books with simple words and pictures that you point to as you read. Developmental Targets: Social/Language, Cognitive and Fine Motor. One month and up.

Kitchen Band. Allow your little ones to explore their musical side

with your pots or a plastic container recommends Porter. They can use their hands or a spoon to create their own rhythms. Your baby will start to learn basic math skills by playing around with simple rhythm activities, explains Bourgeois. Developmental Targets:  Cognitive, Social/Language and Gross Motor. Eight months and up.

Hiding Fun.Initiate simple hide and seek games with your baby

by going under blankets or behind furniture says Porter. Encourage your little one to try hiding from you as well.  Developmental Targets: Gross Motor, Cognitive, and Social. Six months up.

Ball Play.Porter suggests using different sized balls with different

textures to teach the game of catch. Your baby will develop hand-eye coordination as she gets the hang of the game, explains Porter.  Developmental Targets: Fine and Gross Motor, Cognitive and Social. Eight months and up.

Discovery Box.Turn an empty tissue box into a sensory game suggests

Bourgeois. Decorate the outside of the box and then fill it with clean fabrics that have different textures and prints explains Bourgeois.  She recommends that parents encourage their baby to pull some fabric out of the box and then help baby explore it with his hands and mouth.

Developmental Targets: Fine Motor, Cognitive and Social/Language. Six months and up.

Movement Fun.Put favorite toys around the room for your little ones to

get to any way that they like, says Shaughnessy.  Feel free to get on the floor with your baby to model fun ways of moving.  Developmental Targets: Gross Motor, Cognitive and Social. Nine months up.

Mini Monet. Make your own paint with corn starch, water and food

coloring, suggests Bourgeois (see recipe in side bar.) Encourage your little Monet to paint with her fingers or a brush. Consider also offering different textured things to paint with like sponge shaped animals. Developmental Targets: Cognitive, Gross and Fine Motor and Social. Six months up.

Most importantly, focus on having fun with your baby. The bond you create through engaging your baby in playful ways will create a great foundation for his development.
